Our AK Wahlen special issue on the 2025 German election closes with another excellent article: Krause, Thomeczek & Wagner find that small polling shifts around the 5% threshold influenced support for The Left and BSW.

New paper in @electoralstudies.bsky.social! “Polling and parliamentary representation” with @drphilphil.bsky.social & @aikowagner.bsky.social We ask whether voters systematically responded to public opinion polls during the 2025 election campaign in Germany. doi.org/10.1016/j.el...

This study is part of my @dfg.de project on the role of public opinion polls in representative democracies. The findings also speak directly to recent work w/ @christinagahn.bsky.social (@thejop.bsky.social), where we document related threshold effects across 25 countries. doi.org/10.1086/742632

We find a clear threshold effect. Polling just above 5% goes with markedly higher vote intentions for The Left and the BSW. Several tests indicate that this reflects genuine responses to newly published polls, rather than polls and vote intentions tracking the same underlying preference shift.

We also find these effects to be (partly) driven by strategic switching. Above the threshold, both parties attract voters identifying with other parties. For the FDP, no sizable effects are detectable. But it reached 5% in only 7 polls – likely a signal too weak to trigger systematic responses.

In 2025, three parties – The Left, the FDP & the BSW – spent weeks hovering at Germany’s 5% threshold of representation. Using daily @gles.bsky.social survey data (8,000+ interviews), we ask whether supporters shifted their vote intentions depending on whether a party polled just above or below 5%.

Our evidence points to ideological differentiation as the main mechanism. Ideologically moderate PP sympathizers, reassured by the center right's distancing from the far right, stayed in the PP camp. We also see no relevant vote flows between VOX and PP. [5/6]

Overall, we find that a credible, costly, and ideologically grounded refusal of the far right can pay off for mainstream parties - without feeding the challenger. ... even in times of prior cooperation between both parties. Comments are very welcome! [6/6]

The negotiation breakdown immediately became national news - just one month before the Spanish general election. The rupture happened mid-fieldwork of the national election survey. That lets us treat it as a natural experiment by comparing vote intentions just before and after the rupture. [3/6]

Our results cut against the conventional belief. Support for the center-right PP rose by 2-4 points, robust across a wide range of specifications. The far-right VOX gained nothing - if anything, it lost slightly. [4/6]

This effect, however, weakens if polling uncertainty is clearly communicated to voters. Using a survey experiment conducted in Austria, we show that visualizing party-specific margins of error significantly increases vote intentions for parties polling just below the threshold.

The key takeaway is in our opinion not that polls should be restricted or banned. But how we report them matters a lot. We are grateful for feedback from many colleagues along the way, and to the AUTNES team and our research assistants for their excellent support.

Whether a party clears the electoral threshold critically influences which voices are heard in parliament and, sometimes, in government. We study what happens to parties hovering right around that line in the polls - drawing on 1,095 party-polling estimates across 142 elections in 25 countries.

Using an RDD, we find that parties polling just *below* the threshold are substantially less likely to clear it on election day than those just *above*. That gap is too large to be explained by polling accuracy alone. This shows that polls do not just measure voter preferences - they shape them.
