I’ve been saying this for years re Global North/Global South, but by extension: people in the West/Global North (yes it is vaguely defined but iykyk) have so much to learn about politics, capture and mobilization from what they think is the “periphery”. Eastern Europe teaches us all this year.

Throughout Europe, young people are demanding radical change. For a long time, the compromise offered by European social democracy read something like this: we provide incremental change to improve people's lives. Incrementalism equals realism and radicalism equals idealism. While we may believe ...

↔️ Polarisation did not disappear. Its focus changed. 56% of TISZA voters identified Orbán, Fidesz or the government as Hungary's greatest threat. Among Fidesz voters, 37% named the war in Ukraine. The two electorates differed in what they considered the main political threat.

🔍 What can we learn from this election? Opposition coordination alone is not enough. TISZA combined a different issue agenda with movement-party organisation, social media and nationwide campaigning. But winning an election, even with a constitutional majority, does not complete democratisation.

📊 Analysing 12,511 Facebook posts and 69,204 news articles, we show that Fidesz focused on war, sovereignty, Brussels & energy prices. TISZA instead emphasised government performance, corruption, public services & territorial inequalities.

🗳️ Who voted for TISZA? Our survey data (~6,000 respondents) show that among its voters: 🔹 58% supported the opposition in 2022 🔹 14% voted Fidesz 🔹 7% did not vote The victory was primarily about opposition realignment, alongside mobilisation and some switching from Fidesz.

A nice surprise this morning: Google Scholar let me know that my work has now passed 1,000 citations. It means a lot to know that the work has been read, discussed, used, and built upon. Thank you to everyone who has engaged with it, especially my collaborators, mentors, and students! :)

With COVID-19 we may be witnessing a generation in the making. It is the most named event among the young, irrespective of status, region or ideology. The young were the ones who bore the containment measures. Older people, who ran by far the highest risk of dying, hardly mention it. 6/6

One of my empirical-work econ takes is that I think academia should be *more* open to publishing work based on best-we-can-do weak data, as long as there's really no other way to address the question and that work is very clear about what it can and can't actually say.

Turkey keeps creating fascinating party names. The Good Party (İYİ Parti) was already a great example. The new CHP splinter takes newness "as a winning formula" to another level: it's literally called the New Party. Check out our recent paper on party names and branding 👉 doi.org/10.1017/S153...

This conference in honor of Dr. Donatella Della Porta looks like a Who Is Who in social movements studies: www.sns.it/it/evento/so... (no, I wasn't invited nor am I presenting, but I can recognize great work when I see it, and Dr. Della Porta has been a bastion of solid scholarship in SocMov).

German SPD, Greens, and Linke will stop posting on X. An important step and signal. X and its owner have long become a megaphone for the far right, a venue that is actively used to encourage abuse and violence. It‘s simply shameful how many in politics, media, and academia still actively post there.

This is a really interesting article. All of it has lessons, but the part that really struck me is the way populist culture war issues weren't tackled head on, but were instead effectively dismissed as far less relevant or important to people than issues of corruption and public service decline.

Much of the coverage of the Hungarian election has focused on Orbán. We know less about the strategy behind Péter Magyar’s and Tisza’s breakthrough. I’ve written a short piece for @ecprtheloop.bsky.social on why this challenge succeeded.

Do protests change elections? Prior research: "yes, and dramatically so." But is that always true? What about protests in the last few years? Our latest working paper challenges prevailing logic. Our finding: most recent protests have failed to do anything to influence elections.

🔮 #FutureOfPopulism No.106 🗳️ @eborbath.bsky.social argues that #Tisza’s breakthrough in #Hungary wasn't just about anti-incumbent anger or Péter #Magyar’s personal appeal. It rested on a combination of cross-cutting grievances, participatory organisation + intensive campaigning. 👉️ bit.ly/3QeKq6v

It's weird that all these accounts I follow for other reasons (US politics, international politics, UK, etc.) are posting about Hungary. You gotta give it to Orban, he made HU "interesting" -- in a bad way. I am looking forward to HU going back being an obscure, boring, normal country.

Periodic reminder: this isn’t just an election. It’s either a popular uprising against Orbán or an authoritarian mobilization to keep him in power. (And it can absolutely be both.)

At 5pm it's officially a record -- at 74% it's the highest turnout in the history of modern elections in Hungary. And there is still two more hours to go.
