Used to be terms of sale were settled AT the sale and could not be changed. Now everything is subscriptions and TOS so Big Tech will continue to unilaterally change the terms in its own favor at its own whim until it is legally made to stop.
NEW: Virtually every news organization has a Meta business account. Meta’s new terms say it can scrape websites “associated with” those accounts—and use the content to “train” its products. @andrewdeck.bsky.social and I on what this means for publishers: www.niemanlab.org/2026/10/meta...
One take here is that we should figure out how to allow people to spend more time exposed to news, not less, and that we have been trying the fast food version of journalism on the web for 20 years and a less labor-intensive summarizing tool is probably not the fix.
Google says it has 400+ publications in its News AI pilot, which tests features like overviews; participants include Financial Times, CNN, and The Texas Tribune (Andrew Deck/Nieman Lab) Main Link | Mediagazer Permalink
Fox “News” is not journalism.
Fox News has given less than 2 minutes of airtime to Monday's report that Ken Paxton had partied overseas with two fugitives from U.S. justice amid their multi-day fixation on James Talarico’s temporary absence from the campaign trail due to illness. www.mediamatters.org/fox-news/fox...
This story does not note the only relevant denominator: not 3,000 layoffs from 420k total but from 8,000 corporate staff. If you think you can reduce staff by 37% with AI you are delusional, using AI as a cover story or running an incompetent corporate office. abcnews.com/Business/wir...

Lol from @reckless.bsky.social “Maybe the only anti-trust policy this country needs is to make it illegal to buy Warner Bros.”
Media literacy is tech literacy is civic literacy.
New York Times tech reporter Natasha Singer, author of Coding Kids: Big Tech’s Battle to Remake Public Schools, makes the case for “tech civics”: teaching kids to ask who profits from technology and who is steered by it. “It’s about power,” she tells Tech Policy Press editor Justin Hendrix.

“Hype is eating the future, and leaving us the bones.” Sun-ha Hong of UNC-Chapel Hill says the Silicon Valley hype machine systematically “borrows credibility from the future to purchase legitimacy in the present.” The cost, he argues, is a planetary-scale drain on our alternatives.
In what possible fictional version of reality could this policy be necessary? Unless Claude is 5,000 offshore technicians in a trenchcoat.
Anthropic wrote that the new policy update “is meant to apply only in extreme cases, where users repeatedly act cruelly toward our models, with no discernible purpose. It does not apply to common versions of user frustration, pushback, dark creative themes, or model testing and research.”
This delusion is both Narrative Pareidolia and a touch of Jerusalem Syndrome:
Anthropic is out with new nonsense about Claude (or the collection of models called Claude) deserving moral consideration and/or be able to feel distress, so my inbox is filling up with journos asking me to comment. I've also got a day job, so here is a brief set of public comments on this: >>
A thought experiment is to wonder what it is like to work at a job where decisions are made daily that hurt people. And then too look around to make sure you are not in that job.
"NPR spoke to an official at a government contractor .... He spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of retaliation from the government. 'No one that we spoke to at DHS was for this idea whatsoever. ... Everybody knew warehouses are horrible places to put people.'"
