This painting of a stitched section ('Circular') looks incidentally like a demonstration of paper grain: long grain (good!) on the left page, short/cross grain (not so good) on the right page.

Can remember when and where I heard the news of Miles's death – meeting/interviewing Petr van Blokland in Delft. The talk about digital typography stopped ...

Hatherley's balanced and perceptive assessment of the later John Berger, marred by "a certain folksy soulfulness". Good for him for saying this out loud, and good for NLR for publishing it. newleftreview.org/sidecar/post...

Your music tastes via three artists (no genres), Dutch band leaders only: 1. Gustav Leonhardt (1928–2012) 2. Misha Mengelberg (1935–2017) 3. Willem Breuker (1944–2010)

Yes, this is old-fashioned Oxford University Press English – but the rules are a little complex, for example 'improvisation' is spelled like that, for etymological reasons

I felt that my eyes were already giving off a more steady look and stuck my hands into my trouser pockets with an ease that half an hour before was completely unknown to me.

Ik voelde dat mijn ogen reeds een vastere blik afgaven en stak mijn handen in mijn broekzakken met een losheid die mij een half uur te voren nog volkomen onbekend was.

Destination stones from the old Blackfriars station in London, rescued and reconfigured: when read across the rows – a surreal poem when read down the columns, its beautiful but more mundane

a pivotal book that changed the way many of us think about the UK – and a difficult one, partly because of its nature as a collection of discrete essays

Every home should have a copy of Tom Nairn's The Break-Up of Britain. I have every edition from 1977 to 2021. It is not just abt Scotland. It is abt the fracturing of the UK, the rise of English nationalism, challenge of Europe pre-Brexit & emergence of 4 nation politics. Still as relevant as ever.

Thinking of Rollins, Davis, and all the others of their generation, I remember Adam Shatz writing recently in the LRB: "Yet, paradoxically, it was jazz in particular, and Black music more generally, that prevented me, as it still does, from giving up on America." www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v4...

Strange that just now there was peace and then suddenly it's war. The one followed the other as simply as Easter after Lent.

Eigenaardig dat het zo-even nog vrede was en nu ineens oorlog. Het ene was zo doodeenvoudig op het andere gevolgd als Pasen op Vasten.

Here's Feldman's mesmerising 'For Samuel Beckett, which he completed shortly before he died: www.youtube.com/watch?v=kH2J.... It's a piece that 'begins in the middle of nowhere, drifts around for about 45 minutes, and then simply stops.' (David Hurwitz, Classics Today)

"Waiter," he asked suddenly, "do you have real Guinness?" "Sure", came the quiet answer. "Bottled in Dublin? You're not joking?"

Willem Elsschot@willemelsschot.bsky.social

"Kellner," vroeg hij opeens, "heb je echte Guinness stout?" "Jawel," klonk het rustige antwoord. "In Dublin gebotteld? Zonder gekheid?"
