My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

I just realized that this fall is the 25th anniversary of my internship as a page designer at the Post-Dispatch, from Aug-Nov 2001. After the internship, they needed bodies to help with coverage of the Rams Super Bowl run, the Winter Olympics, etc., so they hired me as a temp for four months.

This is the coolest election story I've seen in a long time.

A million North Carolinians have voted in this year’s election. One of them—just one!—cast a ballot from Antarctica. I found him. And I found out how he did it. www.ncrabbithole.com/p/one-person...

The St. Louis Walk for Victory in Forest Park, supporting the Marfan Foundation, was a big success this year, raising $200,000. We're so thankful for everyone who supported our team, the Renaud Empire, in memory of our daughter Jadzia who had Marfan Syndrome and died in 2020.

The good news: The Riverfront Trail is finally being repaired at Maline Creek. The bad news: Great Rivers Greenway's website did not show any trail closure, so you decide to bike to work — and then learn the good news firsthand. Oh, and there's no marked detour.

Republican Rep. Andy Harris incorrectly told a reporter they were breaking the law as the reporter and others recorded an exchange with him last night. Harris had just wrapped up a debate with Democratic challenger Dan Schwartz.

By mid-August when my family visited Clearwater Lake — a reservoir about 25 miles south of Lesterville — water levels had returned to normal. But we heard how hard it has been for business owners there.

Cop is subject of community complaints (including for punching a driver in the face during a traffic stop). Local newsroom files a public records request about him. Eugene, Ore says sure thing, that’ll cost $2.5 million and take at least 44,000 hours to complete. My latest for @theintercept.com:

theintercept.comOregon Police Are Charging a Local News Outlet $2.5M for Records About One CopEugene-based Double Sided Media requested police officer Justin Peckels’s records. The city slapped the publication with an exorbitant fee.

It took St. Louis city nearly nine months to tell me they have no responsive record to a fairly simple records request. Here are all the delay emails I received along the way. Nine months.

I won 3rd place for "best election story" for my analysis of Missouri Republicans' 2025 congressional redistricting, looking at how the revised district boundaries might affect vote totals. That analysis took on new importance in recent months. www.stltoday.com/news/local/g...
