(for those who weren't around then, Rebook spent a massive amount on a campaign hyping up the rivalry between US decathletes Dan O'Brien and Dave Johnson, only for Dan to end his Olympic chances no-heighting the pole vault qualifier in NOLA. Dave did make it and won bronze while competing injured)

Also, rather than POSWID (the Purpose Of a System is What It Does) I think it would be more accurate to say POSWII (the Purpose Of a System is What It Incentivizes) since that is generally the actual mechanism by which What It Does differs from What It Says On The Tin.

I am quite probably the only human being on the planet who can say they have seen Jadorowski's The Holy Mountain in a theater twice in the past six months, on opposite sides of the equator and international date line but in the same season (early fall).

(More specifically on Apr 3 at Academy Cinemas in Auckland, which is a fantastic indie theater buried four flights down from the main central library that still has and uses their waterfall proscenium curtain, and then this past Sunday at The Palm Theatre/SLO Film Center here on the Central Coast)

Also, after once again having my order called as "Michelle" it's not just white people who get other people's names wrong. Many Latino/a/x people seem unable to pronounce "Michael" to save their lives, while white folks just usually can't spell it. ("Micheal" is common) 😅

As usual in late September of an even year I find myself appreciating California's extensive efforts to make sure its citizens have some idea of what they're voting on, even if the size of our ballots and the number of races and measures we have to vote on can be a bit much.

"I'm begging you, please let me work!" the final words reportedly said by Osamu Tezuka to the nurse who tried to take away his drawing supplies, are fairly close. Hardly the first "Nobody: Osamu Tezuka: hold my beer!" but I suppose it was the last.

WHERE DOES THIS BRAIN DAMAGE COME FROM? famous quote from a hospice nurse: "Nobody's last dying words are EVER, "Damnit, I wish I had spent more time at work."

It's interesting that my brain still throws the now long deprecated ⚠️Improper (lack of) use of masking curtains⚠️ warning even in a shiny new Vision + Atmos auditorium.

Four would be Americas, Eurasia+Africa, Australia, Antarctica. Five would granting that the Darien Gap was a much more impassable natural land barrier than the Middle East has ever been. 8+ would be treating at least South Asia consistently with how we treat the Europe/Asia divide.

I'm on team "the world has five or fewer continents or at least 8. Any number in the middle requires either an inconsistent definition (geographical for some, cultural for others) or for the number of continents to have changed when the Suez Canal was built."

Mostly unsure due to adoption on one side and the other going far enough back nobody remembers, with the exception of one guy who was pressed into the Royal Navy and jumped ship in Boston Harbor.

This post is unavailable.

Most of that guy's descendants were Loyalists who moved to Nova Scotia after the American Revolution, apparently again with the exception of one young man who snuck away from the move to stay here with his girlfriend.

This tracks since using tear gas in warfare has been a war crime, even accepted by the US, for the last ~50 years (much of the rest of the world considered it one earlier).

Norm. The guy was shocked that I had been teargassed so many times. He has been in multiple warzones and has never been teargassed.

my man park chan wook took one look at PARASITE and went “oh, you think _I_ can’t make a disquieting class comedy with a beautiful, absolutely cursed house at the center of it too??? well WATCH THIS”

I caught a preview of this at the Palm/SLO Film Center and can vouch. Dark, hilarious, worth catching with an audience if you can. SLOcals: The Palm has it starting this Friday the 16th but like most of their schedule it probably won't be around long.

NO OTHER CHOICE: beautiful, bleakly hilarious, terrifying

Cindy Crawford X Kow Yokoyama is the kind of fever dream combination that could only be brought to life by the Japanese bubble economy. Yokoyama’s Two Factory artbook has photos and behind the scenes photos from the making of this campaign.

Well, that and that they were sci-fi series from the same year and all three ended up getting us cable airtime to become widely known when US DVD releases were just starting to ramp up.

Trigun and Outlaw Star both got compared to Cowboy Bebop for no reason other than Cowboy Bebop being really good

Willfully remaining ignorant of the reasonably foreseeable harms caused by the actions you take or incentives you create should be treated as WORSE than knowingly causing harm because it has been responsible for more damage. Convince me I'm wrong.

Much of this goes way back in our national mythology, where the West was settled by rugged individualists (who we downplay also happened to be the beneficiaries of the largest Federal handouts in American history, mostly in the form of 'free' or cheap land and defense from its prior inhabitants)

I see it everywhere: normal folks who blame themselves when they just don't have enough, instead of seeing the system that causes that. It is also readily apparent to people from other nations: think how the French always marvel that we don't riot or have a general strike

The mystery movies ended up being Airheads and Detroit Rock City, neither of which I'd seen before and both of which had some fun surprises in the cast. I had to quiet my inner AR police, but otherwise a good time all around.
