I finally read Spindle’s End and the most harrowing part of the whole fairy tale plot is an orphaned girl reckoning with the truth that her aunt and uncle never really loved her. At one point, they think she’s not their relative and a fairy has to spell them not to express their relief out loud.

David Gura@davidgura.bsky.social

cool, cool

Every semester, I tell my students that I have opted their papers out of the AI-scraping tool to fight plagiarism and AI use because they own their writing. And yes, it’s messed up that I can click this well-hidden checkbox on the LMS and they can’t. Classrooms shouldn’t mean surrendering consent.

an expert here: designing chatbots to be anthropomorphic, sycophantic yes-men is a choice ai developers make

So the solution to defunding the maintenance of our infrastructure is the Batmobile, not taxing the wealthy…got it. Also, my bike could have stopped in time and if not I could hop off. Also a lifesaver. Michael Bay, don’t call me, but if that scene pops off in a movie, I’ll know.

shauna@goldengateblond.bsky.social

is one of those situations “DAMMIT i’m in a michael bay movie again”

Just keep thinking of all the Establishment Dems who don’t want us to think their Republican colleagues are actually, like, MEAN mean, you guys! Care more about the life of Congresswoman Omar than the feelings of Speaker Johnson, it should not be hard.

NBC News@nbcnews.com

BREAKING: Justice Department issues subpoenas in investigation into progressive Rep. Ilhan Omar’s immigration status, including to members of her family.

Once my theatre students marveled that I let them change and challenge my “vision” for our plays with their own pitches. I asked why I’d want to have ALL the ideas - I can’t have as many good ideas as WE can. They were struck by an adult not pulling rank, but an artist shouldn’t want to be alone.

Wowwwwwww this is so gross. Each of these writers is absolutely betraying the rest of the creative community. On, like, so many different levels. Everyone involved with this is a scab, pass it on and shun them accordingly.

Interview AI bot that doesn’t have actual judgment: I see this gap on your resume!! Teacher: You mean the summer holiday during the year I switched schools? Also, it’s a myth that teacher do nothing over the summer— AI: rejected!

Cass Morris@cassmorriswrites.com

Interviewer: Can you explain this gap in your resume? Immersive narrative designer: Negative space is a powerful tool for inviting participants to bring something of themselves to the experience. Really transcendent moments of collaborative spontaneity can occur when you make room for imagination.

My extended family has a highly competitive fantasy football league with a traveling trophy and elaborate grudges. I don’t like fantasy football, so I don’t play, just sit off to the side and eat popcorn with the drama. I don’t AI a winning team to take the crown from someone who wants it?

Matt Binder@mattbinder.bsky.social

can’t think of a better example of AI being mostly a solution to a problem that doesn’t exist also it can’t help when this is your user base

My point being that half-assing a fantasy football team is only a problem if you want to win. If it’s a social obligation you feel you must bow to, make a cursory team, agree to every proposed trade (becoming super popular), and move on. You only “need” AI because you want to win this game you hate.

How dare you try to influence public opinion when you’re not even an AI influencer?? How many followers do you even HAVE, pontiff?? (Don’t say a billion Catholics, no one has that many subscribers)

... and much, much more from MANY voices. When the EA claim "no one has been warning you about this stuff" they are doing a double erasure: 1) Of the people doing the warning 2) Of the actual harms they are warning about bsky.app/profile/emil... >>

Emily M. Bender@emilymbender.bsky.social

But the insidious thing is that the argument seems to be: No one has been telling you to worry about this stuff/you're all asleep at the wheel! (And they've caught Bernie with this, among others.) >>

Americans are resisting - engaging in protest and civil disobedience in a daily basis - the cruel, brutal, illegal, inhumane actions of our gov't. Please amplify their good works, the regime doesn't want you to hear how many decent ordinary Americans refuse to comply.

I do think “every rich person went insane during covid because it was the first time they’ve been inconvenienced in decades” felt a little reductive at first but damn if isn’t more and more compelling as the years drag on

And definitely DEFINITELY don’t float it as an explanation for why the character you are playing in a (historical!) play is behaving badly. Just play a villain and don’t pretend it would easily explain murdering your nephews and taking the throne if the character had been autistic all along.

Annalee@flowerhorne.com

I'm not tagging the person because I'm talking about the trend, but y'all: when someone posts "here is an unacceptable thing that someone did and you should not do it because it's unacceptable," don't be the person who responds with "I bet the person who did that is Autistic."

"maybe Scrooge was right" Scrooge wasn't real! He was invented specifically for the purpose of being wrong!

Abigail Larson@abigaillarson.com

"Maybe Scrooge was right-" he was not. He was a miserly asshole facing the same demise as his former business partners if he didn't make some serious changes with how he treats the people around him. That's the point.

Tried again to read The Martian Chronicles last year and damn if half the stories weren’t “but the real horror is trusting women — especially overweight women!”

Amy Rae Hill@amyraehill.bsky.social

You ever read one of the classics that's pretty well-regarded and just think "man, this guy really hated women"

Also worth noting that her signature line was "I'm not bad, I'm just drawn that way," and the reason she loved Roger was that he was the only one who actually understood that (including every single person who has watched and talked about the movie for four decades)

- 'He was determined to prove his theory.' [portrays confirmation bias as heroism; that's not the scientific method - if you want to test the validity of something you formulate a falsifiable hypothesis then propose conditions under which it would be *disproved* - I'm looking at you flat-earthers]

The actual harsh truth about MAHA is that it is an anti-vaxx, anti-science, pro-diarrhea conspiracy movement. It cloaks its arguments in abstractions about "big pharma" and "free speech" to generate *the exact op-ed The Atlantic keeps publishing*. Movements like this need to be fought, not placated.

The answer to a lot of urban problems is: Slow down the cars -less noise -more reaction time for drivers to see people -pedestrians are 70% less likely to be killed at 20mph than 40mph -car v car or car v building wrecks less violent/injurious -Less shoulder buffer space required at lower speeds

I am querying and trying not to lose heart at it. Last year I started a rejection quilt progress where I buy fabric when rejected and can only make a square when I send a new query. It helps. But I’d be worse at marketing, so I keep at it.

Can the Kylie Jenner AI surveillance glasses killing the environment fail REALLY fast? Aside from everything, I like my frames and don’t have time to go to the eye dr. But they are not, at a glance, obviously NOT the invasion of privacy goggles &I don’t want to make everyone around me uncomfortable.

For my second master’s thesis, my second reader (who disliked me) absolutely insisted that NO ONE knew the word “archmage” so I wrote my Spite Footnote breaking down the two Latin roots of the word then citing at least ten examples, all by women, going back over 40 years bc shut up Matt.

If you see this, please tell me the worst/most baffling bit of creative feedback you've ever recieved. Mine is still the time somebody told me my aliens had names that were too alien. Not that they were unpronounceable, just that they didn't sound enough like human names.

And yes, I had a dig in there implying he should use context clues. Did not include the sentence I wrote (then tempered) in the original reply email pointing out that this is an academic thesis on Shakespeare - “archmage” has nothing on the usual jargon.

Does it count if I made the protagonist and love interest of my unwieldy, gritty time travel attempt at a thriller into the loving foster moms in a cozy middle grade story about an involuntary time traveler stuck in the foster system finally finding her people?

In honor of the third day of Pride Month, I remind writers of romance (in all genres) that a Love Triangle requires at least one queer relationship. Otherwise it is a Love Arrowhead or a Love Line (thank you to my students this past semester for the distinction)

When I lived in Amsterdam during the GWB years I once had a guy ask “what the hell is wrong with your president?” and I said “I don’t know- I hate the bastard” and then we got along just fine

Yep, I travel a lot internationally and have never encountered someone who was unpleasant to me just because I’m American. I think many Americans who don’t travel abroad much seem to *hugely* overestimate the odds of non-Americans being rude to them simply for being Americans.

I foolishly thought I'd be able to finish this quilt by LAST year's Pride Month, but easily made it for this year! Also, I've turned it into a cape for the upcoming Middletown Pride March -- CSU-AAUP (faculty union) strong!
