lab 2.0 in Chicago in search of a postdoc! Pursue virus-host interactions, post-translational modifications, and RNA splicing. Excellent in oral and written communication, lab and project management, and an ability to supervise and mentor trainees. sfbkrlab.org www.careers.luc.edu/postings/35620

Happy 134th birthday to humans knowing that viruses exist! OTD in 1892 Dmitri Ivanovsky presented his evidence of a tobacco mosaic disease caused by filterable agents (not bacteria!). Martinus Beijerinck confirmed this independently in 1898. And voila, virology is born!

Kalamazoo’s Science on Tap series kicked off this semester with a bang - David Wilson from Kalamazoo College presented on biophysics of viral icosahedral capsid structures! Complete with 3D models of different capsids 🤩🦠

Happy to see @joelrc.bsky.social's paper identifying cellular heterogeneity in basal OASL expression as a major determinant of interferon induction during influenza virus infection out in its final form: www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/... Happy new year, hope everyone's 2026 is better than 2025!

I don’t have a problem with someone evaluating my science abilities if I have the ability to examine theirs. Let’s do televised qualifying exams for all the political appointees who will be evaluating science grants and proposals. Let’s start with directors of institutes and cabinet secretaries.

Extra kudos and thanks to all the staff at NIH and NSF and other federal funding agencies for working extra hard in very small windows of opportunity to get grants reviewed and funds released before the attention-addled federal policies change again (on an hourly basis).

Hello BlueSky friends! I am wildly grateful and excited to share that I'm joining the Biological Sciences Dept at Western Michigan University as an Assistant Professor this fall! My lab will study host-virus interactions required for HCMV infectivity. Go Broncos! 💛🦠🧫🤎

This is the way to fight back. Not just rejecting illegal demands, but also arguing affirmatively for the value of university research.

Coinciding with it's "No" letter Harvard has refashioned its university homepage into essentially an advertisement for the social benefits of university research. This is the current front page.

Vaccines work! As measles cases have recently been reported in Alaska, Georgia, New York, Rhode Island and Texas, it's important to remember that prior to the introduction of the measles vaccine in 1963, measles killed 400-500 people and resulted in ~48,000 hospitalizations per year.

Joy is resistance. Community is resistance. Continuing to do work we believe in is resistance. Education is resistance. Living aligned with our professed values is resistance. It is a hard time to be a person and a scientist, but now is the time to keep showing up, for ourselves and for each other.

DO NOT TAKE YOUR FOOT OFF THE GAS. They balked. Now make them pay a price. Again and again and again. Politics does not end with elections.

I think we should be cautious about embracing the "NIH needs reform" nonsense. The sort of reform you are all thinking about bears little resemblance to what the right wingers have in mind. Don't be naive.

Ending 2023 feeling especially grateful for my science support system. It's been a tough year of unfunded grants and often frustrating experiments, but also great opportunities and realizing my science support network is wider than I ever thought. To my friends, colleagues, and mentors- thank you ☺️

Another grant cycle, another close but not good enough to be funded. Highest percentile I've gotten yet, but impact score not quite there. Onward! As Ted Lasso says, time to be a goldfish. Except I'm not planning to just forget, gotta take the lessons and alter my approach...let's do this.

You are up to date.
