New pre-print and tool alert ! This one addressing a long-standing viromics issue: we were missing a tool that can reliably assign broad host categories (e.g. prokaryote vs eukaryote) to novel viruses. VHAMSTeR is now available for this thanks to very talented postdoc @susiegriggo.bsky.social !!

Susie Grigson@susiegriggo.bsky.social

🚨 New preprint 🚨 We’ve discovered millions of viruses from sequencing data but we don’t always know who they infect. Our new tool, VHAMSTeR generates broad virus host predictions across the tree of life (prokaryote, plant, animal, fungi and protist hosts) A thread 🧵👇 www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

My first PhD student is defending his dissertation in two weeks!! There will be mouse genetics, there will be retroviruses, there will be B and T cells, there will be champagne, there will be me trying (and likely failing) not to cry the whole time.

Congratulations to Robert Zhang from the @cornymel.bsky.social lab on his upcoming PhD thesis defense! 🎉👏

Exciting news: @uwgenome.bsky.social will be hiring for two tenure-track faculty positions this year, one open rank and one assistant professor. Both are “Genome Sciences” interpreted broadly so we welcome applicants working in a variety of fields and methods. Ad will be out shortly.
