I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement. For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation. I will not be silenced.

David Quammen's essay in The New York Times today closes with this paragraph. It's both a scientific falsehood, and an incredibly dangerous narrative. If you're willing to give me five minutes of your time, I'd like to explain why.

The agreement was signed out of the public view a month ago by Pentagon official Robert Kadlec and NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya, echoing my reporting. It establishes a 10-year framework that officially runs through September 30, 2036.

The sole purpose of this is to suck NIAID dry and take away funding for infectious disease research. The administration attempted to do that earlier by demanding major restructuring and funding cuts for NIAID, but were rebuffed by congress - this'll achieve the same www.nytimes.com/2026/09/04/u...

The NIH just released a proposal that will apparently hide peer reviewers’ impact scores and percentiles from the research team, their institution, and NIH program officers. All the better to obscure how funding decisions will be made primarily via political review, I’m guessing.

I'm excited to share a preprint that's been years in the making: the idea took shape during the COVID pandemic. Anecdotally, people would sometimes spread COVID at work but not at home, and vice versa. Why? One explanation would be if infectiousness is fleeting...

Finally, it's up on bioRxiv! It's been a rewarding journey shaping this story. My deepest gratitude to @vignuzzilab.bsky.social and @christopherbrooke.bsky.social for their incredible support, and to the @mcbillinois.bsky.social & @astar-idlabs.bsky.social for enabling this research

We show how DelVGs can evolve to more effectively inhibit WT replication and reveal a cool example of antagonistic pleiotropy between WT genomes and DelVGs. Fadi's work sheds a lot more light on the complex dynamic interactions between the different viral genomic elements within viral popualtions.

Welcome to the Fascist States of America, where the EiC of a leading journal is forcibly removed by police for passing out his own editorial at the annual meeting of the field’s association…because it’s “too political” (read: it calls on scientists to speak out & stand up). In the review, we explore 2 key themes: - The collective pool of viral genomic elements delivered to a given cell shape the infection phenotype of that cell. - How viral genetic variants interact with each other within and between cells can significantly affect the evolution of viral populations.

Viral populations contain huge numbers of genetic and structural variants. How these variants interact with each other can influence population phenotypes in profound ways. This review attempts to summarize what is known about these understudied facets of virus biology and why we should care.

This is bad. Bad for researchers. Bad for science. Bad for universities. Bad for professional associations. For example: 1. Every award would be vetted by political appointees, who could overrule peer reviewers and deny the award if it doesn't advance the president's priorities. 1/🧵
