Welp. I didn't want to go all in on the Apple ecosystem but I think I don't have a choice now. Hello to KyNorthstar@iCloud.com

It was a good run, Apple and privacy. It really sucks to see them decide that they don’t care about privacy anymore, but I think we all knew this was coming someday

This is a nasty little trick to circumvent what most people are taught about with basic cybersecurity re: domain verification. Watch out for it.

“We mustn’t delay 27.1β; our new phone was just announced and 27.1 will have support for it! Instead, the sensible thing is to release 27.2β first, THEN 27.1β with more features than 27.2β, and make 27.2β not support the new phone. Also the new phone isn't in stores for another month"

Don’t update to macOS 27 Golden Gate. It’s vibe coded and it sucks. Tons of shis isn’t working at all, like minimized windows or the emoji picker. Avoid this update for as long as you can. It’s bad.

Today’s episode of TechBrew Ride Home was so scifi, I can totally imagine it being from an 80s movie trying to imagine life in 2026. “Concerns about AI safety has boosted cyber security stocks” would definitely be at home on the radio in Demolition Man or something @brianmc.bsky.social

Prediction: The next wave of Unprecedented Times will be megacorporations buying out as many open-source repos as they can, and shutting them down, to "encourage" people to use their AIs to make apps. "Has your favorite app gone away? Use Grok to make a new version just for you!" 🤮

When @marcoarment.bsky.social expected that Claude Fable would be back within months and that was shortcutted to weeks, he then expected the July 7th deadline wasn't what it seemed; it might be back again soon thereafter... I felt there was good truth to that. Didn't expect it back THE NEXT DAY 🤣

Sad to see Anthropic go this route. I expect this of companies like Google or Meta or OpenAI, who are eager to build a surveillance state, but until now Anthropic has felt similar to Apple: focus on just making a good product and always consider the user. Oh well. www.anthropic.com/legal/privacy

QUERY really shines best with large requests, since those don't neatly fit in a URL query string, and POST isn't designed to be a "fetch this data" method. My example would probably fit just fine in a URL query string, but I figured it's still an easily-understood example that gets the point across

This won't make headlines, but it really should. The QUERY HTTP method is finally an RFC, after over 11 years of redrafts, debates, and collaboration! QUERY gives devs a payload body like POST does, but it's safe, idempotent, and cacheable like GET is! datatracker.ietf.org/doc/rfc10008 🧵 1/5

It'd then receive a JSON blob from the server, and use that to build the "About Me" section (not the section itself, not what the user sees). Neither GET nor POST was meant for this, but QUERY is. 🧵 4/5

Now, that modern REST app will send a QUERY with the appropriate data in its body, and the server/CDN can return the JSON response it needs, fast & reliably, without bodges! 🧵 5/5

This should close a gap in modern REST apps, where methods like GET/POST are used to fetch technical information: data that programming languages use to build or change something, rather than their intended purpose of fetching a single user-facing resource like a webpage, or submitting a form 🧵 2/5

For example, yesterday, if a REST app is on the user page and I tap "About Me", it would send a GET request with the query data in the URL query string (really long URLs!), or a POST request with it in the body (not idempotent, not really cacheable) 🧵 3/5

The promise of targeted advertising was to not waste time and effort by pushing things at people who don't want them. And initially, that's how it worked. A long time ago, I liked Google's ads because they were always about something that actually interested me.

Getting the details right mattered a lot to me; there’s an active community behind this package, many of whom were instrumental in ensuring version 3 went off without a hitch! I couldn’t have done this without their active and enthusiastic participation in PRs and emails.

I’m proud to say Howl continues to demonstrate the kind of polish that only comes from having spent over a decade shipping Apple multiplatform apps. Fully customizable, of course, released under The Fair License, and ready to drop into your product.

This is version 3 of a package I’ve refined for years. Started as a replica of macOS bezel notifications, same rock-solid API as ever. Now, I added toasts (popup messages). Same concept, in modern SwiftUI for modern apps. Enterprise reliability, and a declarative API SwiftUI devs will expect & love.

Is that Claude-style phrasing I hear in @brianmc.bsky.social's voice in TechBrew Ride Home? I wonder if that's just me, or maybe he's starting to talk like that from using Claude a lot, or maybe he's using Claude to help write scripts?

probably long past time I actually did this but hello howdy here's a starter pack for following people in and around the minor leagues go.bsky.app/ChVvEPp

If you tell people "this thing you need can no longer be obtained officially", they then obtain it unofficially. 🤯

In 2023, Apple changed the HIG to remove any mention that the default button of a window can be activated with the keyboard. This is the legacy of Alan Dye. Remove things which were there for good reason, without providing an alternative.

Really enlightening, moving from Google Photos to Apple Photos... just how featureless Apple Photos is. It doesn't even let you make a panorama from existing images!

It works! This is user-supplied control points converted to an SDF then the SDF converted to a mesh, allowing you to define terrain that mixes a heightmap with floating additive features and subterranean subtractive features Still blocky for now but it's a relief to know the approach is sound

TFW you endlessly studied class inheritance in school only to gradually realize that inheritance is superfluous and all you ever needed, or ever should have studied, was interfaces. I was learning some Rust last year, and it's the first language I've seen that finally gave up inheritance.

Me, a Swift dev, watching Rust devs argue about the use of Rust's `Result`'s `unwrap()` which took down Cloudflare.

Cloudflare's use of Rust's `Result`'s `unwrap()` is what ultimately took down Cloudflare. Rust has many ways to get the value or error in `Result`, including `expect()` and `unwrap()`, both of which crash the program if the `Result` contains an error. Swift's `Result` has no crashing APIs at all
