love how mapquest is leaning into a new sense of purpose in the 2020s

The Roads Have Eyes! πŸ‘οΈ Turn on the Surveillance Layer in Map Options to see known license plate readers from Flock Safety, Motorola Solutions (Vigilant), Genetec, Axis Communications, Axon, Leonardo (ELSAG), Neology, Rekor, PlateSmart, Ubicquia, Verkada, and other outdoor surveillance cameras.

okay finally got around to seeing avatar 2 and I'm not sure whether my favorite character is the autistic daughter who can talk to cnidarians or the tactical genius whale but boy howdy if someone had told me it had characters like that I would have seen it in the theater

this but I'm also an alter ego. my secret identity uses capitals and punctuation like clark kent wearing glasses

ghost malone ergo propter bones@proptermalone.bsky.social

i write in lowercase because I think it more effectively conveys my intended tone and it seems like probably that’s why other people do/do not do it also

guess who has a bone infection! no wonder I've been feeling like crap the past week and the right half of my face is all swole up figured it was something to do with the root canal, and it more or less is, though the canal itself is fine

also thank you belgium, where I can text my dentist on a sunday evening, get a 9am appointment for the next day, have two x-rays and not be charged for anything

I haven't found costumes for pixel or malysh yet the thing about malysh is she's quite large, and the thing about pixel is I expect she'd fight me to the death over most costumes, going by how much she hated the spay jammies

an artist friend used rovo (atlassian's llm assistant, which she has access to through her job) to write a chrome extension that creates jira tickets from pages on thingiverse and other 3d model sites I'm really excited for her! a whole new world of "I need a little program to do X" has opened up

everyone is so focused on what natural-language-to-code can do for industry but I'm most excited about what it can do for normal ordinary people "make a bespoke tool to help me be more organized about my hobby" can take billions of individualized forms and I think that's beautiful

the 3d printing world has long imagined every home being its own little factory, but I think llms turning every phone into a little software factory will win that race

me: "pixel, do you want to be uplifted?" pixel: *jumps from bed to chair, climbs to top of chair, gives triumphant mew* well y'all,,,

night train back to brussels is just under two hours from home. there were no available sleeping cars, but props to the college-age kids in this little compartment who were very respectful of personal space while we all played human tetris all night

Replying to @valkyrie.hacker.gf

it's precisely as reasonable to worry about this as it is to worry that the universe secretly has a counter for number of times you've flipped a light switch; electricity seems safe, but tomorrow morning turning on your lights will collapse a false vacuum and snuff the human race

Anyway, now that we have two sets of aspiring overlords instead of just the pre-existing fash problem... This is what Eliezer Yudkowsky actually believes (I apologize to the physics-knowers among my followers) Source: sl4.org/archive/0009...

um, what happened to broods 11 and 12?

Alex Wild@alexwild.bsky.social

I’m so tired of US politics, I propose we abolish existing states and make new ones based on the ancient Cicada brood territories.

it's funny, I recognize the exterior of the aachener dom because it's in the old video game darklands, which is set in medieval germany and which I played the absolute bejesus out of as a kid cartographically accurate 15th/16th century open world game, absolutely goated though it sold poorly

been pretty head down the last couple of days, but it's been worth it. phase 1 is now in feature freeze and astra is looking for gaps, bugs, and regressions

ok yeah we are definitely going to need a 0.1.1 release, this audit is brutal astra trips the cybersecurity flags a lot more often than sol does, which is annoying when you're auditing code your own agents wrote to make sure it really does what it's supposed to

I like back ends and I can't deny

Felladonna@langsec.hacker.gf

it doesn't have a standard library yet and it isn't self-hosted yet, but it's a real live shippable language (for one backend. there will be many backends. I like things with lots of backends somehow)

like ok I understand that I am way more devoted to peer review than even the average academic, but crucially the process has not actually done me wrong yet sometimes reviewer 2 really does have a point! this probably sounds credentialist af but istg it's about orthopraxy, not orthocredentiality

ieee is really chill to work with and they do a stellar job of logistics, which is nice because we don't need a staff svengali, which is absolutely how nate soares portrays himself and damn that weirds me out it's also always weirded me out how blithely disinterested in peer review they all are

crucially, peer review is not a credential-issuing/denying process. it is an evidence-producing process. it produces evidence of observed strengths and deficits of a work

and at least at my workshop, we use a double-blind submission process to reduce the likelihood of traits external to the work (name, gender, that sort of thing) influencing a reviewer it requires integrity and professionalism, but it's a process that has produced 12 years of results I'm proud of

it is just alien to me that the thought leaders of a field with this degree of ambition over the direction of at this point trillions in investment are so allergic to peer review, and the only way I can make sense of it is to conclude that, as I've observed before, they're not serious people

you don't actually they just did a divide by zero error on utilitarianism

thankfully you do not (and should not) read it to understand AI safety, but you may have to read it if you want to understand why AI safety focuses on some hypothetical risks with urgency and some other much more obvious risks with some degree of detachment
