I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

This part.

It's really important to pay attention to the fact that Lula beat the fascist candidate not by compromising and trying to meet fascist voters in the middle, but by sticking to his guns, promising prosecutions for election interference, and mobilising his own voters to turn out in greater numbers.

Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who spared a thought for my country today, who amplified information about the coup d’état attempt, and worried about Brazil’s democratic future—the world’s democratic future. We won! Women won! The Amazon won! Young people won! Democracy won! Hope won!

I had to take a little break to rest my eyes & voice after recording the audio for my upcoming book (which you can preorder at simonandschuster.com/books/Deep-U...). So it took me a while to get to the indomitable Arundhati Roy''s essay, Apocalypse Now and Then (H/t) @ambakak.bsky.social 🧵

Also most humanities programas are not admitting students every cycle or admitting a very reduced number of students. Dissertation fellowships are disspearing.

our institutions have stopped hiring, we've been telling students not to pursue advanced study, and to the extent that humanists have mounted a defence, it's been by pleading our utility as an adjunct of STEM disciplines and professional schools in short, it all worked

El taxista catalán Youssef Abraoui es uno de los jóvenes acusados falsamente por la extrema derecha de matar a una anciana en Burgos: "Lo han hecho para crear odio y porque el mes que viene hay elecciones". Así actúa la ultraderecha.

And as an elected official, we would love to know what you’re actively doing to end this beyond writing on social media. What’s the plan?

ICE has notified me of another death that has occurred in their custody. This is the 59th death under Trump’s second term. We cannot allow this to continue. We need justice for ICE’s abuse, and we must completely eliminate this broken for-profit system.

Anti Muslim violence is on the rise globally. We need to confront and denounce.

We need to see the link between culture of sexual violence on our campuses, the racism and discrimination on our campus and the attacks on fields and departments of gender and sexuality, ethnic, and Black studies. It’s all connected. #academia

There was no violent protests in France until a police blew up a boy’s hand. Let this be very clear. These protests only turn violent after the police gets involved. There were no violent encampment until police brought violence to campus. I’m so tired of this narrative. Basta

Europe is on fire. Students in the street. Now people are calling them violet. It’s really something how people understand violence according to the interest. I think the state is violent. Our president is violent. Our institutions are violent. Students are not.
