Re-introduction: I am Gabriel Liston, painter. Everything starts in a notebook, as a cartoon. I was the twink in art school carrying the preschooler, a hunting knife, ibuprofen. Now the old man scribbling in a library book. Work for hire, work for sale. Happy to listen. Lastwater.net

I don't know that there is a definitive line to cross that makes you say, "I live in a police state now" but when masked gunmen can routinely brutalize the public, citizen or immigrant alike, with impunity, you have reached that point.

For someone who wants to continue riding their bike in the rain, but is usually going to some event where they have to look moderately nice or wear professional clothes and DOES NOT want to bring a change of clothes, what are your best rain gear recommendations? Should I go full poncho?

I intentionally did not reread Wildwood before we go see the film this afternoon. However, the Kid stayed up until 1:30 am doing so, and now she and her ma are loudly discussing all the points. I'm loudly tapping my feet and cranking the Jim Croce

Book folks, Catapult press announced they're going under last night. However, it sounds like their current round of publishing—including my aunt's book—will still go through. Please consider preordering The River Drowns the Able Swimmer wherever you buy fine books today.

For sale! A beautiful woodcut by Allen William Seaby (1867-1953) from around 1910, depicting a Red Grouse calling across a moor on a cold winter's day. Other copies are held in various museums, including the Ashmolean. Dm to buy or visit my Etsy shop here: etsy.com/uk/listing/4...

Look, no matter how kind your comment on my post, if your MO is shilling picture books made with "the help of ai," You will be blocked.

Today i finished the picture book dummy I've been (joyously) slogging through, AND tonight I almost maybe nearly sorta kinda figured out how to sing Cat Power's Metal Heart.

I'd like to see more cis allies grapple with the crazy making environment trans ppl are living in right now the way that Hauser grapples with that here. There is no one right way to understand this, in part bc there's no one way all trans ppl experience it. But really sitting with it is important.

Emily L. Hauser (she/her) ❌👑@emilylhauser.bsky.social

I try to imagine it—hearing a vicious, down-is-up simulacrum of my lived experience wielded as a tool & a weapon, every single day, on the heels of all the other ways, implicit & explicit, I'm dehumanized by my society, culture, & politics—& I can't. I only know how it looks from here, & it's vile.

Appreciate the coverage of my amendments to try to address loopholes in the surveillance pricing policy. People say committee is the place to do rigorous policy work and then try to rush through when convenient.

Kevin Foster@kevinhfoster.bsky.social

A mini investigation into the surveillance pricing ban making its way through Portland City Council. The ordinance is scheduled for a first reading before the full council on November 4.

BFF and I were 12. For two weeks at his Dad's La Jolla beach condo, all we did was boogie board, bird-watch, and consume MTV (Raspberry Beret vid premiered) and Totino's Pizza Rolls. They're my madeleine.

liberalcurrents.comDo Trans Women Belong In Sports? The question of trans women in sports has little to do with the cultural practice of sport itself. Rather, it’s merely a convenient way of normalizing transphobia.

Intense wealth inequality leads to a shortage of necessities and a corresponding glut of luxury goods, simply by existing. Why? Because a few people with lots of money can only buy so many meals. Food is therefore relatively unprofitable, despite being inelastic. The good money is in yacht-building.

Even if you're not an old-timer who was around for this era of computing, you may well enjoy seeing what was involved in getting a _program_ running in that era — or checking out the fully-working version of the game that is embedded in this piece. You can tell Bluesky is the progressive future because loser conservatives are starting to come here from X and dogpile the political news they are worried about.

In 2024, Portlanders voted in 6 progressive city councilors—4 of them Democratic Socialists of America members. Now, as 3 of those 4 are vying for reelection, wealthy local political activists and their allies have been pulling out their checkbooks to prevent them from winning a second term.

Huge follow-up reporting to my scoop: The Guardian confirmed America Next—the conservative nonprofit founded by Bobby Jindal that was offering students $ to disrupt El-Sayed events—paid a firm registered to Tommy Teepell’s dad Timmy $250k for “canvassing and influencer marketing” against El-Sayed.

I'm surprised it isn't making more waves yet, but as of October 15, all packages to the US from Japan Post have to be processed through an app called Zonos to pay tariffs. This app requires the sender to submit photos of every item, and their AI then calculates the value. Zonos collects the tariff.

Was at a great talk given by artist/science communicator on deep sleep and REM, when an audience member starts extolling "insights" of Edgar Cayce. I grew up in a rural spa town w/ family who fell for proto-MAHA Amway schlop: I NEED A TRIGGER WARNING BEFORE YOU BRING UP CAYCE.

The artist themselves easily slid away from the questioner's prompt, which didn't stop this person from trying again three minutes later. I loved hearing folks talk about their bedtime affirmations or partner's snoring, but, damn, limits.

I loathe Meta platforms and their random-ass timeline. It’s designed that way to keep people on their apps longer, which, like, yeah I also spend more time on the road when I’m hopelessly lost and can’t find familiar landmarks.
