NEW: There’s a disaster unfolding in Alaska right now. And no major network is covering it. The remnants of Typhoon Halong battered western Alaska overnight. Homes, with people in them, have literally been swept into the Bering Strait. At least 20 are missing. No comment from any federal agency.

It’s hard to put into words the grief I feel watching what’s happening in our country. The cruelty inflicted on immigrants, the disregard for human dignity, the targeting of the most vulnerable—these are not political disagreements to me. They are moral emergencies.

We should also all remember that all dictators are xenophobes. They wrongly blame immigrants for a serious problems that do not exist. Ignorant people and people who don’t travel much are afraid of people who do not look like them. It’s a strategy as old this time itself. Reject it.
