Reminded of this article after getting the new mRNA flu shot. Had to ask for it specifically at the pharmacy, and pay a little more, but it feels worthwhile.

I wrote about the new mRNA flu shot that got FDA approval last week, a year after HHS started winding down research funds for...mRNA shots. Thanks @doritreiss.bsky.social for answering my questions about what happens next. For @cenmag.bsky.social's weekly policy brief cen.acs.org/policy/moder...

This is quite a graphic from CNN

Dr. Jay Bhattacharya was a content creator who spent the pandemic “calling for” other people to do things. Now, he’s in power and as pathogens spread out of control, all he can say is he’s doing his “best.” I believe him. This is his best. My latest.

Wow, Senate seems to be really considering blocking the OMB rule. Collins specifically mentions the hundreds of thousands of negative comments the rule got—nearly half a million, per the federal register. (Which, I've been meaning to find out, is this a record?) www.politico.com/live-updates...

🚨 WE HAVE A DEAL! After three years, in a major step forward for our members, we have ratified our first contract with @propublica.org’s management. We deeply appreciate everyone who supported us along the way. Here are some of our big wins👇

I wrote about a new policy on research that manipulates pathogens—potentially high risk but crucial for protecting us from deadly diseases, sources told me. Of course, the context around COVID & the Fauci hearing can't be ignored. For @cenmag.bsky.social cen.acs.org/policy/dgof-...

Fascinating story — "There is this sentiment that the brain is for thinking" — and also an amazingly dressed neuroscientist.

Mental fatigue is an evolutionary relic. When our brains get tired, it’s because our body is saving its resources for the long haul — even when we have plenty of energy available.

Another thing coming up a lot: "Congress has the power to do X but is not."

Laura Dattaro@ldattaro.bsky.social

It is really striking that the word that's come up the most in these last six months of covering science policy is "uncertainty." I am hearing it over and over and over again.

Enjoyed reading this. How EPA works is a puzzle to me, but this helped. Bill Foster is a treasure - he represents the district my company is in. When we write grant briefs "for members of congress" we keep in mind they mean a typical member and not him!

I'm not sure I've ever gotten a more enthusiastic comment on a study I'm covering: "I’m always cautious about how I describe advances in cancer treatment because I don’t want to prematurely raise hope in patients. In this case here, this is huge." www.the-scientist.com/daraxonrasib...

Watching a House hearing and am struck by how often they are refering to specific news stories and entering them into the record. A real under-appreciated, under-celebrated impact of journalism, IMO.
