Has it ever, in the history of opinionated women, been a welcome tactic for a man she doesn’t know to come into her mentions to tell her to moderate her tone? Has this ever once worked out the way the condescending man has envisioned?

what do you call it when the president steals an unfathomable amount of wealth from the treasury and then declares it illegal to investigate him

I’m filled with white-hot rage at Olga Tolarczuk. I’ve spent every day of three decades struggling with my art. The art lives in the struggle; the product is only the last traces of the art. If you’re not in the struggle, you’re not making art. All respect I’ve had for her has instantly vanished.

Your grandma uses gen-AI? Mock her gently but relentlessly. Your students use it? Mock them savagely. Your favorite writer uses it? Mock her loudly and whenever she appears in public, because with the use of it, she has become a tool of the fascist oligarchs who want to kill us all.

Here are the facts: People have always had and will always have abortions in all 50 states. Abortion pills are safe, effective, and have been used by millions of people. No court or politician can change either of those realities.

If @legroff.bsky.social wasn’t a writer, she says she’d be a landscape architect in an interview with @rumaan.bsky.social. For the three-time National Book Award finalist, making a work of fiction malleable is much like planting a garden or shaping the land.

If we actually want to appreciate moms, we should be providing free childcare, healthcare, and guaranteed income for stay-at-home parents to put more money in families’ pockets and ensure no SAHP is reliant on a partner for their economic security. Idk I think that’s better than 15% off a vacuum.

The most predictable thing about my post blaming Substack for the accelerated collapse of literary media is when people who are personally benefiting from Substack swan in to angrily defend it. This is 100% my point! It’s good for some individuals, massively destructive for the culture at large.

If you use AI to write an email either to me or to my bookstore, we will not be reading your message. It’s getting yeeted into the swamp. If you can’t take the time to do the work yourself, why should we take the time to engage with what you want from us?

I blame Substack. The single worst development for the literary world in the last few decades.

Niko Stratis@nikostratis.com

We are rapidly losing the outlets where new writers can learn to shape a voice, where they can cultivate skills beyond quick news hits and PR with the guidance and mentorship of strong editors and the benefit of a trusted name, and it’s such a loss for writers and readers alike.

Substack is an inherently pro-individual, anti-community, anti-new-writer technology and is responsible for the death of so many excellent small literary venues.

As both a bookseller and a parent of two teenage boys, trust me: if you want your young men to read enormous books with obsessive zeal, buy them the Dungeon Crawler Carl series (or borrow it from the library).

Happy Independent Bookstore Day! Your independent bookstores put their money back into their local economies at many times the rate of the chains or tech giants. Authors would be lost without them. Support your local indie today (and every day).

for me impeachment isn't what we should be after. this president and most of his cabinet and staff should be prosecuted for corruption, fraud, war crimes, obstruction, and all the various crimes they have committed. i will only vote for a presidential candidate in 2028 who commits to this.

I just don’t understand why nobody is stopping him. Stop him. Stop this madman. Stop him.

He is insane. And this is an open declaration of intended genocide. If any other world leader said this, there would be sanctions and an arrest warrant, not just for him, but for his whole regime.

A very good thread about journalists and AI, much of which also applies to writers of nonfiction books. We are being told, with increasing frequency and stridency, that we "just don't get" how AI can help us, by people who are manifestly not interested in helping us. Know your enemy. Hold the line.

Michael Schulman@michaelschulman.bsky.social

This is all reminding me of a conversation I had recently with an old friend who works in tech and extremely gung-ho about AI. When I told him about my process for writing a long New Yorker piece, he was absolutely sure that AI could make it more "efficient." / www.theguardian.com/books/2026/m...

GET HER.

When the nation’s top lawyer treats the law like a political weapon, the damage doesn’t end when she’s shown the door. The Florida Bar previously refused to investigate Pam Bondi because she was a sitting federal officer. Now that shield is gone. I wrote about what accountability could look like.

Maaaaaaybe but LLMs hallucinate tons of shit and if you don't have domain knowledge (which is one big reason a writer might research) then you might not know what your LLM is making up. I tend to stick to primary sources whenever possible; I have a couple of decades of experience with Googling.

Scot Close@scotclose.com

If you include researching and editing as part of the overall process, there are LLM-based tools that can reduce your workload and leave more time for the actual writing. That’s why some people use it.

AI is the deadly whisper of capital interests that betrays the working class in order to destroy it from within, and it couldn't be more simple than that.

Lauren Groff reposted

Seeing people say AI is a tool that helps "working class people become writers" and its such bullshit. The process of learning and skill sharpening is labour, and its telling that there is work to be glamorized (being perceived as a Writer) and labour beneath people (learning to write)
