“There is no perfect place to cry, although I would argue that crying while sitting in a shitty car in the drive-thru of an aging fast-food restaurant comes close to transcendent. There is no science to this, but there is history.” ICYMI I wrote about the Wendy’s emo EP for @weareravenous.com

Huge, incredible, lifechanging news: We have an essay on @weareravenous.com from the one and only @nikostratis.com, about that emo album Wendy's put out www.weareravenous.com/wendys-emo-a...

90. The Dad Rock That Made Me a Woman by @nikostratis.com from @utexaspress.bsky.social It was AN EXPERIENCE listening to this while alternating with reading Trans/Rad/Fem, as Talia Bhatt's description of transmisogyny was the theory — the casual violence in this book was the real world example.

literally one of my most well read pieces, on Jackass, happened because @andizeisler.bsky.social DM'd me to say "want to write about this?" and I miss that era of this work. I'm a TERRIBLE pitcher, as anyone who has ever gotten one from me can attest to I'm sure, but I would love to do more

i'll tell ya one thing i miss is FREELANCE ASSIGNMENTS. i have never been a good pitch-er but i can pretty much write whatever someone tells me to and i used to have a stable of editors who liked hurling ideas at me and seeing what i came up with. the salad days of $300 assignments from MEL lol

My second book will be LOSING MY EDGE (AND LOVING IT), a series of essays about middle age, parenthood, and navigating the washed life, viewed through the lens of formerly hip indie bands that have become dad rock. Look for it in 2028.

Question from this week's newsletter: Who is you favorite "feat. ______" to see in a song description? Read the whole thing here: www.thatsmarvelousnewsletter.com/207-darkness...

thatsmarvelousnewsletter.com#207. Darkness and YouHi everyone, I'm home for a few days in between quick road jaunts across the country. I really enjoyed performing my current assortment of jokes for audiences in Irving and Houston. Thanks so much to...

I always enjoy @joshgondelman.bsky.social 's That's Marvelous newsletters, but he proved himself a genius with this week's one. I'm now building a playlist of all the songs I can find with "Feat. Chali 2na" in the title!

good morning fellow Toronto's please don't let us be mayored by a guy named Brad Bradford. A dud with a dangerous desire for power who would destroy this city from within. Olivia Chow is not a perfect mayor, but she's a damn sight better than anyone else on the ballot, and we can't backslide now.

give her the chance to actually do her job, not just clean up the mess of the last career power guy who spent his days passive-aggressively letting it all fall apart.

every fawning profile of an AI innovator in the NYT is just a future essay in The Cut about why kids no longer talk to their parents

cool, cool

not for nothing but the three bullet points spat out by the machine that drained the Pacific Ocean are the most "quick name three things about kids" ass response I've ever read

They should make a folding iPhone that’s like a roadmap of the province of Alberta nabbed at the PetroCan in 1998. Make that shit open up 372 times. Make it never go back together normally. Your phone is shoved into the stupid glovebox of your 82 Chevy S10. Dumb stupid phone. Who folded this thing?

Just catching up on this season of Taskmaster and how come no one told me that there’s a key task where we see an extended series of photos of Matt Lucas bringing a shoe to the Yukon, my home territory.

I’m the Leo pointing at the screen meme when there’s suddenly a photo of Air North, the Yukons airline , followed by a snowmobile . The two classic photos of the Yukon.

Every new movie sounds fake to me, what do you mean “have you ever wanted to fuck the bees out of the wicker man?”

I hope the killer orcas come back together for one last job and sink JKR's stupid fucking boat when she's out at sea writing her little screeds about the elite cabal of poor people. I promise to burn down a sea world in their honour.

A lot of great Beastie Boys lyrics but the one that really sticks with me is MCA going "I'll stir fry you in my WOK"

Also, one of the best records this year drops next week, it's from a Vancouver punk rock band called PISS. Canada is a fucking trend setter babe.

Nathan Fielder being the hottest ticket in town getting everyone hooked on weird Canadian shit. Everyone is calling cigarettes darts. Kids are being taken to the hospital in droves because they broke their fingers playing crokinole. Someone is showing up to gay halloween dressed like Red Green.

The "Toronto unsafe" conversation is heightened rn, but look: There are regularly people smoking crack on the street in my neighbourhood. Seeing someone doing drugs doesn't make us unsafe. The ppl who are unsafe are those same users whose ability to do so safely was taken from them by the Ford gov

if you think Toronto is unsafe than carry Naloxone with you, because the people who are using on the streets are at higher risk than you. it doesn't help anyone to deny the reality that it's happening, it's how we talk about it and what we do that matters.

Yesterday when I was lamenting the loss of catapult magazine I had no idea the news would get worse

The 12th(!) Gender Reveal grant cycle is now open for applications! As always, these funds are for organizing / community projects led by trans people of color. We are particularly interested in funding existing projects that materially support trans folks, queer people of color, immigrants, etc.

The list of prior names for the Weinermobile are incredible, what do you mean we could still be calling it German Wiener Sound Car

Also they didn't start calling it the Popemobile until like 10 years after the Weinermobile. I love a pope calling his guys and showing them a photo of the weinermobile and saying "itsa me"
