Do #spiders really sleep?
In our new study on #Portia fimbriata we tested all behavioural criteria of #sleep and found evidence for regulated, two-stage sleep with recurring REM-like stages. Out in @pnas.org!

REM Sleep Iota Oscillations Across the Lifespan
๐งช๐ค #sleep@snipeso.bsky.social analysed high-density EEG from 578 people aged 7โ70 to investigate iota oscillations and explore how the brain changes across the lifespan.

Can less cognitive control help us learn?
I'm excited to share our new Cell Reports paper. Using inhibitory rTMS in 95 adults, we found that inhibiting the right DLPFCโor both sidesโimproved learning of hidden statistical patterns. Inhibiting the left alone did not.

Synchronization in the visual cortex is coordinated with hippocampal sharp-wave-ripples during awake immobility. The effect is stronger in high cortical synchrony and constricted pupil phase.

New paper from the lab! In this project we identified different ripple types and link them to behavior and other sleep oscillations doi.org/10.1093/slee...
and also are supported by findings from David Duprets lab, where the same ripple types were associated to reactivations of older vs newer information 10.1016/j.neuron.2025.09.012 .
New paper from the lab! In this project we identified different ripple types and link them to behavior and other sleep oscillations doi.org/10.1093/slee...
In contrast, large-sized ripples exhibited increased hippocampus to prefrontal cortex connectivity, occurred during hippocampal spindles together as a doublet with a small-sized ripple, and were related to complex memory consolidation.
Finally, learning induced heightened coupling between hippocampal delta and spindle oscillations and their cortical counterparts, consequently leading to an increased synchronization of ripples with cortical oscillations.
New paper from the lab! In this project we identified different ripple types and link them to behavior and other sleep oscillations doi.org/10.1093/slee...
In particular we can identify large-sized and small-sized in contrast to the default medium-sized ripples. Small-sized ripples were associated with increased prefrontal cortex to hippocampus connectivity, followed hippocampal delta waves, and were related to simple learning

Now in Science: How does the brainโs navigation system allocate its limited representational resources during behavior?
We found that grid cells sweep toward locations of interest, providing a potential mechanism for allocating spatial attention in the cognitive map.๐งต

How does the brain build a memory?
A common assumption is that the neurons activated during an experience collectively form the memory engram.
In our new Nature Neuroscience paper (finally out!), we show that this is not the case.
www.nature.com/articles/s41...
Every time you experience something new, your brain faces a decision: Should it update an existing memory or create a new one?
In our new paper in @sfnjournals.bsky.social#JNeurosci, we isolate that exact decision, moment-by-moment during learning ๐งต
The deadline for our young PI symposium was extended! Don't miss out on this opportunity to build your community and share strategies to navigate these uncertain times.
