Why are younger children so good at learning new skills? One reason may be that they are better at a fundamental cognitive mechanism: statistical learning. We followed the same children from age 7 to 14 and found that this learning gradually decreases as they grow older. doi.org/10.1038/s414...

Fantastic! I have become a cow fan. It is worth reading.

Cow Tools! We have lived alongside cows for nearly 10,000 years. We breed them and exploit them It is now, only now, that we have discovered THEY CAN USE TOOLS Here I describe our study (paper) www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti... in @currentbiology.bsky.social with @auersperga.bsky.social

Can less cognitive control help us learn? I'm excited to share our new Cell Reports paper. Using inhibitory rTMS in 95 adults, we found that inhibiting the right DLPFC—or both sides—improved learning of hidden statistical patterns. Inhibiting the left alone did not. www.cell.com/cell-reports...

1/2 🎇 Good news! 🎇 The kind people at Behavioral and Brain Science have made the new collection on "Conscious AI and biological naturalism" #OpenAccess for a limited time: target article, all 50 commentaries, & my response. Go to the link and click 'save pdf': doi.org/10.1017/S014.... Do share!

Today at 3:00 PM, I’ll be giving a talk at the SEPEX Conference in Valencia on the relationship between statistical learning and mind wandering. If you’re around, come by! 🙂

We have a long way to go before we understand consciousness. Why assume an explanatory gap exists before establishing that it does? The “hard problem” is just dualism in sheep’s clothing. www.noemamag.com/there-is-no-... #neuroscience

🧠 Does the brain pre-activate feature-specific patterns resembling the perception of an upcoming, predictable stimulus? We reanalyzed the open dataset from Demarchi et al. (2019) and found no evidence of feature-specific neural pre-activation during auditory predictions. 🧵

New preprint! Habits should get stronger with more practice, right? Well, this crucial result has been difficult to reproduce in human labs. In an instant classic, de Wit (2018) showed 5 failures in obtaining more evidence of habits in conditions with more training -as compared to little trained

A *super* exciting new paper from @lizsiefert.bsky.social!! Human hippocampal ripple rates track very closely with several indicators of low arousal, during both sleep and wake. This is probably the most compelling data I have ever been associated with.

Liz Siefert@lizsiefert.bsky.social

New preprint! We show low arousal states promote hippocampal ripple genesis in sleep and wake. This bridges rodent work, where ripples predominate during sleep, with human studies reporting ripples during active behavior, identifying low arousal as a common mechanism www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

In our study, implicit statistical learning and cognitive flexibility showed a trade-off, but this link weakened as obsessive–compulsive tendencies increased. OC traits may reshape the balance between automatic learning and flexible control. www.cell.com/iscience/ful... @florahann.bsky.social

Brenda Milner is a hero and 108!! She did a lot more than discover the hippocampus is linked to declarative memory, but that work is the most famous.

Admirable Women@admirablewomen.bsky.social

Neuroscientist Dr. Brenda Milner is recognized as one of the fundamental founders of modern cognitive neuropsychology. She proved the hippocampus is essential for forming long-term "declarative" memory (facts, names & events). She was born #OTD in 1918--she's 108 years old today! #WomenInSTEM

New preprint! Children often beat adults at learning hidden patterns. Using eye-tracking and a method we built in eLife (Hann et al. 2026), we found the edge is not better error detection. It is flexibility: kids update their beliefs, adults cling to old predictions. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...
