So true. My first internet access was in college. My college had a student run UNIX server any student could get an account on. My friends and I all made personal web pages by typing html into text files. Mine had a bunch of original poetry on it.

we fucking loved it, even when there was basically nothing on it, and let me tell you something else: we loved it because of human connection, human diversity, human creativity. WE DON'T NEED A SINGLE THING ANY OF THESE COMEMIERDAS HAVE MADE AND TRIED TO SELL US IN ORDER TO HAVE A GREAT INTERNET.

I don’t care where you started out on the political spectrum If your kid comes out as trans & you don’t become a rainbow-clad, parade-cheering ally & rock-solid supportive girl/boy/enby dad/mom? You were never a parent at all You were a doll collector furious they didn’t stay in their packaging.

The Ignyte Awards have been announced! Congratulations to all of the winners and finalists!

The Ignyte Awards@theignyteawards.bsky.social

I finally got to it and it’s SO GOOD. Episode to come Tuesday, but definitely one of my favorites of the year, and so much of it is specifically right up my alley.

An Unofficial Hugo Book Club Blog@hugobookclub.bsky.social

The Republic of Memory by @mahmudelsayed.bsky.social is one of the best books of 2026, and should be a strong contender for the Hugo Award next year. I wholeheartedly endorse this book. We had the chance to chat with the author about his debut novel, his influences, and about language in general.

Thanks, Carin! Knowing we’ve sold someone on a book is one of my favorite parts of doing the podcast! (My other favorite part is having an excuse to chat with my friends about books every week.)

Thanks to @lisajune.bsky.social and @sullery.bsky.social for featuring The Radiant Dark. I grabbed it immediately from libro.fm and am enjoying it. Just what I needed as a break from binging various mystery series. narratedpodcast.com/episodes/377

True. Orson Scott Card’s work had a huge positiveimpact on me as a teenager. I reread Speaker for the Dead recently, and all the radical empathy that helped me shape and articulate my worldview is still in there.

Micah@rincewind.run

“this person is bad so their work was always bad” is also a really dangerous view to take because it leads to - unconscious or not - a bias towards “but I do like this other person’s work, ergo they must be a good person” which, as we have seen over and over, is simply not true

It's the last of my videos asking authors at Worldcon slightly unhinged questions! (For the record - these are all people who already know me. Do not stalk writers around events, please, and ask them nicely if you want to involve them in shenanigans.)

I read it and recommend it! I got stuck a couple of times when a character was about to make heart wrenchingly poor life choices, and had to put it down for a few days and come back. I think this is a sign of emotionally effective storytelling.

We recorded the Hugo Award reactions last night. @marksiegal.bsky.social and I could have kept babbling on, but @sullery.bsky.social was a killjoy and pointed out that he had to get it edited in time to post this morning.

New on Narrated: Scott and I discuss The Inevitable Undoing of Zahara Douglass, by Leslye Penelope. Bonus: Hugo Awards reactions with Mark, and my Y2K bug story. #BookSky narratedpodcast.com/episodes/374

If you’ve read some great books or short stories this year that you think should be nominated for awards (or fan writing, SFF reviews, (ahem) SFF podcasts, magazines, etc.), this is a great place to share them. It’s also a great place to look for recommendations to read before award nominations.

The Hugo Awards will happen NEXT WEEK. I won't promo the 2027 spreadsheet again until November so all the winners can enjoy their flowers. However, please bookmark it/share it with your Hugo pals (or use it to convert them to voters) and keep adding all your favorite art. :)

The Hugo Poetry Award still needs more nominations from you. Just a few days left. Are you a fiction person who needs help judging poetry? I've got just the thing for you: bsky.app/profile/case... The best free outlets to find said poetry listed below

GUIDE FOR FICTION-LOVERS READING POETRY FOR THE FIRST TIME: So you've only read fiction your whole life, and now people are yelling at you to nominate poems. How the hell do you figure out what's a good poem? Let a guy with three degrees in fiction + poetry + publishing tell you.

Great talking with you at @readercon.org, Casella! This is a fun episode, and I especially enjoyed the coverage of @portersqbooks.bsky.social. I was working in Porter Square 20 years ago when they opened, and they’ll always have a special place in my heart!

A Meal of Thorns@mealofthorns.bsky.social

New Episode! Reporting back from this year's @readercon.org, w/interviews with @lisajune.bsky.social, @smessenger.bsky.social, & @englelaird.bsky.social. Plus, talks with Katherine & @joshthelibromancer.bsky.social of @portersqbooks.bsky.social and their new review project!

My kitties this morning. We started locking the freezer because Billy by himself can open it with just his weight by sitting right there. Once while we were out of town, the cat sitter found the freezer hanging open and the cats had chewed up a bag of frozen pork chops all over the kitchen floor.

#Readercon starts tomorrow and I can’t wait! If you are going to be there and would like to spend 10 minutes talking to me about your creative work, your con experience, and audiobooks/audio fiction for the podcast, let me know.

It was the time a friend heard me play a set of original music and said, “Have you ever considered just playing covers?” And he was so confused that I had an emotional reaction. “What? You have a nice voice. Why not sing songs people already know?”

If you see this, please tell me the worst/most baffling bit of creative feedback you've ever recieved. Mine is still the time somebody told me my aliens had names that were too alien. Not that they were unpronounceable, just that they didn't sound enough like human names.

Okay, wow. I’m about halfway through Sublimation by Isabel J. Kim and I’m OBSESSED. When you leave home a part of you stays behind. This book is about a world where that is literally, scientifically true.

Sometimes a book comes along with an SFF mechanic (technology, magic, whatever) that sends my daydreams into overdrive spinning off plotlines in my own life and/or my favorite media. This is one of those books. What has hit you that way recently? #BookSky

This sounds fun, and for a good cause. Do I know any Boston area book people going to this? Maybe some #Readercon folks? #BookSky

Dontcha hate it when you in the last big push for your Reader Prom & Fundraiser & THEN you realize you've scheduled it for the same day as Boston Pride? Mondays, amirite?!?! ... Anyway, our Reader Prom & Fundraiser has been rescheduled for August 29! Everything else is the same!
