You know those sad montages that they often do in TV shows or films, especially crime/mystery shows where they should a bunch of different depressing things and people looking all stoic or sobbing? Petitioning to call those, “mourntages” from here on out. Thank you for considering my petition.

My favorite thing about this post was finding out my editor hadn’t seen Black Sheep by @jonathanking.bsky.social. I feel like my editor and I are about to enter into a new level of ✨friendship✨ Either you can handle weresheep or you can’t, and apparently that’s a dividing line for me.

The absolute most basic function of government is to ensure that the population has access to food, water, and basic services. To neglect all of that in favour of some stupidly expensive new weapons is a complete failure.

Thank god the rock-ribbed manly titans of unrelenting belligerence keep winning elections, can you imagine if the sappy hippies had won.

Thanks, @charishkristi.bsky.social 💕 I like to think all my books are mutant babies. Audiobook links should be coming in any day now, and we’re still waiting for the ebook to populate to Amazon, but hey, Bookshop has it… For signed copies with fun swag, order from the link in the comment.

I see we're having a debate about whether it's okay to go back to "X," the site owned by a trillionaire fascist who is currently bankrolling the GOP's midterm, throttled Ukraine's war effort, and still winkingly allows vast amounts of CSAM on his service Answer: No, what the fuck is wrong with you

I have many, many angry bee thoughts about this, mostly the same as everyone else’s. But one of them is this—I don’t think an adaptation should be 100% faithful. A book is not a film. It’s a collaboration between a TEAM of artists, all of which are experts in their field & deserve JOBS.

As a writer, I of course hope that someday my work gets adapted to the screen. I won’t expect it to be word for word. I won’t expect it to be exactly what I created. I hope I get a team of artists who understand the assignment and make that story their own. And I hope all of them get fair wages.

Also, I would make a terrible fucking director. And me thinking I could waltz on in with zero training and no experience has the same vibes as when people who have never written a word of fiction tell me that writing a book is easy and they could totally do it.

Want in example? I loved All Systems Red by Martha Wells. A solid book. Wouldn’t change a thing. The streaming adaptation took that story and added things to accompany the original stories and characters. The scenes of Sanctuary Moon, which were never shown in the book, were AMAZING.

And I don’t know Martha Wells. Maybe she suggested those. Maybe she envisioned those exact scenes. But I suspect it was the combined art of the screenwriter, the costume department, the actors, the set designers, etc. Adding their own art to the OG version.

The best book adaptations, IMO, get the heart of the book, they get the premise, but they add something of their own. A book is a string quartet. A small team (writer, editor, design team, etc) making a unique song. A film or TV adaptation is an orchestra. Same song, different, fuller riff.

They might have the same tune in their heart, but they’re not the same thing. An orchestra can do things a quartet cannot and vice versa. As a society we should value art. Full stop. It makes up a large part of our lives that we take for granted. And the people making that art DESERVE JOBS.

Write the book you would like to see someone pull from a higgledy piggledy pile in a secondhand shop 63 years after your death and say, "This looks fucking weird. I think I will buy it for Joan.”

If you have ever read a book to a baby, you will realize it's not a linear experience. The baby wants to turn pages backward, wants to ask questions (if they're old enough), wants to examine the pages and get really excited if they can say "bear!" even if the word "bear!" is not on the page.

It's telling that men would rather try to invent tech to replace humans' role in caregiving than step up as equal partners in parenting. Telling, that is, in that it shows how financial capitalism and patriarchy work together to dissuade men from doing "unprofitable" labor, like the work of care.

Book Quote Wednesday's word is 'push' and I'd like to push one last Los Nefilim book at you if that's okay. This is my favorite of the quartet. In this scene, Miquel is a captive who has hatched a plan to take out the enemy: awfulagent.com/ebooks/carve... #BookQW #BookSky

I got some of those painting kits from Michael’s to do some fun Halloween style crafts with the fam. I have never done paint by numbers. I have…regrets. Those are my fingers for scale. You’re supposed to do this with BRUSHES. IS THIS A PAINTING FOR ANTS?!?

The whole kit has 4 of these that make up a whole picture and look, I only paid 6$ for it. We had fun. But also it took me 2 hours to do one and I quickly gave up on accuracy and went for VIBES.

Oh, it’s even worse. To be very clear—I support trans people and think this whole thing is bullshit. But title 9 also creates a pathway on campuses and federal spaces for people who have been sexually harassed, stalked and assaulted to be protected and seek investigation.
