Big news for the backend of Wikipedia. Glad to see that the labour situation for Wikimedia employees has resulted in a union. www.wired.com/story/wikipe...

What is going on with hotels in NYC? It’s always expensive in the nice months but I can’t find anything under $600/night in either Manhattan or Brooklyn in mid September, which feels extreme?

The potential acquisition of HF by NVIDIA really reminds me how extraordinary it is when open source companies, projects, and nonprofits are able to maintain their independence over time.

Dolly Parton was an incredible advocate for literacy, a library innovator, and a brilliant musician. She gave away over 300 million (!) books in her lifetime, fought the increasing censorship of her Imagination Libraries, and wrote one of the greatest feminist anthems of all time. Love you, Dolly!

Library advocates in multiple states and major advocacy organizations wouldn’t be fighting back if corporate greed didn’t dictate their collections over their community’s needs. Supporting a library’s right to fair terms in digital is what brave, forward-thinking, and informed authors do.

I’ve been taking pictures of good bumper stickers for more than 3 years (400 photos!) and the thing I love the most is that you rarely see the same deranged one twice. This was the only sticker on a new looking white Kia Forte parked at the North Carolina State Farmers Market on a Sunday morning.

How can we build a direct to consumer ebook purchasing platform for libraries and consumers that cuts out predatory distributors like Amazon? How can we get out of the trap of platformization and restrictive licensing? How can we reanimate midlist titles?

How can we rethink digital so that it doesn't have to fully mimic print, but rather provide new value by rethinking the value of creative material? Big publishers aren't willing to take a risk and try something new – we have to make our own team.

This from @masnick.com was thought provoking— as an old school “learn to code” type with humanities background, I am interested in the role of expertise in tech. While social media and AI has flattened and made it more ubiquitous, mainstream culture has always been relatively uniform and those with taste have always rejected a lot, embraced a bit, shaped most, and treated a significant amount with ironic detachment.
