On this day in 1965, the first edition of The Magic Roundabout was broadcast on BBC1. Using the animation from the French show Le Manège Enchanté, completely new scripts (which bore no resemblance to the originals) were written and narrated by Eric Thompson.

Some of my ‘pop up shop’ paintings nestling amongst the beautiful (and award winning: Harrogate ‘best in show’ anyone?) displays at RV Roger’s Apple Weekend.

It’s not necessarily beautiful but it’s true. Oil on wood panel. ‘I never actually asked for any of this’ #artistsonbluesky #gesturalart #oilpainting #abstractart.

I went into Scarborough M&S in the rain and came out to full sun. So hotfooted it down the hill to the beach and there it was in all its late summer glory. Love this place out of season. #stunday #seaside #photographersofbluesky #coastalphotography #eastcoastkin #scarborough #northyorkshire

A little acrylic on a 3x3 inch wood panel. It’s Whitby Pier if you’re stood about half way down, looking back. Poetic license taking out all the houses. Too small for the detail 😁 #BlueSkyArtShow #acrylicpainting #whitby #northyorkshire #miniaturepainting

It’s #worldphotographyday and this is my favourite photo so far this year. I took it on 11th August at Dad’s wedding. He’s 83 and on his 24th round of chemo for AML. They met later in life and are hugely in love. They’re the definition of optimism❤️🫶🏼❤️🫶🏼

a little one settled on a bigger one who promised to hold it safe for as long as it could neither knew what that meant neither minded they lay there for as long as they had #poetsofinstagram #leafphotography #poetry

I feel like autumn (But it’s summer) Mottled and irritated Yet warm (Shades of youth Yet all moving south) I like the light This time of night Silly me #poetsofbluesky #leafphotography #naturephotography #poetry

Deep veined Fleshy thoughts Pushing through Signs of the end Inevitable No one gets out alive etc But looking this good in the meantime I’ll take it #poetry #poetsofbluesky #macro #leaf

A web Obscuring What, exactly? So close It is as much the fabric As the fabric itself A cloak which I peep through I wear it It wears me I am it For now #BlueSkyArtShow #Earth #ECK #ForestFriday #ImageAndVerse

I was thinking of saying how fucking tired of it all I am But then I took a breath and thought instead of how I will (I have to I will) wake up tomorrow (later today) And on opening my eyes the choice of ‘yes’ or ‘no’ materialises And I think it will be ‘yes’ again.

My publishers have sent me a proposed new front cover for my book — I asked my 6 year old for their thoughts “This would be a smart and cool idea: a chicken wearing underpants, and with googly eyes!” “I love it, but it’s a history book, so…” “Ok, a reindeer with googly eyes, and crab hands?”

I’ve just picked THE MOST fragrant bunch of flowers in THE HISTORY of time. My garden is delivering right now. #bloomscrolling #flowerphotography #eastcoastkin #honeysuckle #sweetpeas #lavender

Unsolicited writing advice, no. 303: Scene-setting doesn't have to be an entire page of description: you can do as much with a well-placed detail (a sound, a scent, a menu, a reflection of buildings in the water) than with a whole travelogue.

See also: direct young people’s theatre and move on to ‘professional’ theatre. When you can deliver a professionally made show, on time, with a cast of 60, rehearsing for 2 hours a week you can DEFINITELY rehearse with circa 4 paid actors, full time, for 4 weeks with a full time production team 🤦🏻‍♀️

Unsolicited writing advice, no. 1378: Many would-be authors make the mistake of believing that you "start off" as a children's writer, then "move on" to writing for adults. This is both completely incorrect, and terribly disrespectful to children's authors.

Rescued 2 little juvenile Hedgehoglets today, dehydrated in the midday sun. Meet Arthur and Billie. I’ll be tracking their progress at the Rescue Centre before they return to my garden. If you see juveniles (or any hedgehog) out during the day then assume all is not ok. #hedgehogs #hedgehogrescue

Well here we are. End of an era. Thank you Nick Ahad for taking such care with this. (I can see why you’re also an Olivier award playwright). Copyright laws prevent me screenshotting the whole article but this is a good chunk. bit.ly/4xwgnsf

Someone asked me what my poetry is about. I replied: “People.” They said: “That’s a broad subject.” I said: “Not really. It’s the same story every time. Someone trying to be free. Someone trying to be loved. Someone trying to survive.” Anyway, I put a few hundred pages of that story into a book.

Sometimes a day is just perfect. Cuppa with my bestie, now in my little conservatory with the rain drumming on the roof. Warm. Painting with no one to worry about.

RESURFACING acrylic on beech board Happy #worldoceanday all. As an islander the ocean runs through my veins, my heart, my soul. Here’s a painting I did today in honour of the mighty sea. #abstractart #seascape #artyear #artistsofbluesky

Late as always on a Saturday for #blueskyartshow but here we are. Not really fulfilling the #busy theme but nevertheless art, Bluesky, Saturday! Heavy Head. Acrylic on canvas.

These gigantic red oriental #Poppies are just SO diva. #EastCoastKin #FlowersOnSunday #FlowerReport #FlowerPhotography #FlowerSky #BloomScrolling #NaturePhotography #PhotographersofBluesky #Stunday

My #tall painting for #BlueskyArtShow. A favourite of mine. Maybe it’s called ‘so close and yet so far away’ Anyway some tall rocks with tiny houses. Or massive houses on gargantuan rocks. I dunno. I just paint it 😊
