In the high school I went to, the bored kids who were not challenged by the material ended up skipping and doing drugs. Not challenging people and not giving those who need help are both bad for the student.

Your solid B student gets discouraged when it's the same five kids answering questions in class every time. That kid is much more likely to engage enthusiastically when those five kids are channeled off into an honors program.
