I felt I really needed to write about Rowling's essay, not because it's new, but because it's so poisonous and ugly that it felt like sanitizing her not to acknowledge it on my trans news site.

Assigned Media@assignedmedia.org

There's no pretense left. J. K. Rowling made her hate for trans women clear in a slur-filled screed slurring them a dozen times and describing them as deceitful and dangerous. So writes @evanurquhart.bsky.social this morning on Assigned Media. *WARNING: Article quotes Rowling's hateful language.*

If you’re running for office and say that you’re going to take away rights from a minority you can’t cry when that minority & people who care about them refuse to vote for you or give you money

Anti-Black racism in New York is something that needs to be confronted, and it is reasonable to expect the mayor to have a plan to confront it, and also, there is absolutely no reason to define it as opposed to fighting antisemitism, which is also part of the mayor's responsibility.

As a published researcher, I do not want to submit my unpublished work to a company that is going to run it through an AI. If I’ve spent months working on it, a peer reviewer can do me the courtesy of spending half an hour reading it. Anyone else feel the same?

How can AI support researchers in peer review? Springer Nature and Google DeepMind are partnering to co-design an AI peer review assistant that helps reviewers navigate manuscripts and focus on where their scientific judgement matters most. Learn more: spklr.io/63320EVgT8

I don’t care any more about the brains of managers who choose to write their emails and do their 360s with LLMs, though I feel for their reports. But you would think we had learned to be careful with children’s brains after the recent reading catastrophe, and yet. So much money to be made.

Just a reminder that there is no good data to support these uses in K12, we are just testing it live all on kids who won’t ever be these ages again and can’t get them back if we fuck it up.

"AI can draft an essay for you, especially if you give it a high quality prompt." Really? This is what MIT thinks high schoolers should learn? MIT's "Day of AI" dayofai.org provides materials for K-12 teachers and claims to have reached over 5,000,000 students to date. 1/2

There are only two explanations for the NYT's habit of presenting GOP operatives and donors as true swing voters: 1. Their reporters and editors are somehow incapable of running a simple Google searches, showing just a staggering level of journalistic incompetence 2. They want to the GOP to win

The city of Syracuse has known about its lead water crisis since at least the summer of 2024, when extraordinarily high levels of lead were found in drinking water. Yet city, state, and federal agencies have continually failed to take action to address it. Learn more this #NLPPW:

It's National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week. New York State has a long history of lead usage, primarily in paint and water service lines. Exposure to lead can have severe and permanent health impacts - especially for children. In fact, lead is a potent neurotoxin with no safe level of exposure. 🧵

The real zinger here is that news media coverage of AI *is* favorable. It's absolutely sandbagging the entire industry; you wanna see media bias? Take a look at how anime and rap were covered in the '90s. It's just that the best possible angle on groups like Anthropic is still a bad look.

I've got enormous respect for her work and legacy, the same way I have enormous respect for the work and legacy of Scorsese, Alison Bechdel, and Art Spiegelman. But I also believe all of them have failed the rest of us in the creative community by using generative "A.i." in their work.

In addition to this being just bleak as fuck from a human perspective, I gotta say, if you’re overwhelmed by the complexity of writing three nice things about your daughter, why should I want your opinion on literally anything important or complex?

The elections are on next Tuesday, and so much is at stake, including the soul of the Democratic Party when it comes to transgender people. I am asking you to leave a very small number of races blank in which a Democrat has embraced extreme anti-trans hate. I make my case here.

This week’s main story is about how more and more white nationalists, antisemites, and Nazi sympathizers seem to be integrating into the Republican Party, how some of them are currently running for office, and how old you can be for JD Vance to consider you “a very young boy.”

In my experience of life in this country, having 49 reasonable democratic senators and 2 that are bad meant almost nothing gets done and when you bring it up people shout “WHAT DID YOU EXPECT? WHAT COULD THEY DO??” for literally the next decade so I am wary of this assumption about the house.

Padraig2112@isomorphism.net

This is just math. 257 House Democrats which includes 30 who are outright bad on your top issue but are passable on the other 40 things we care about produces a legislative slate that is much more resilient than 218 Democrats who agree with you on your top issue but squabble over everything else.
