It's not the most interesting part

US politics is like a Safdie movie where a gang of billionaire creeps—linked by a dead pedophile—wreck the country to save themselves.

i will never get over this rebecca tiffany quote: the goal of yimbyism is a world where "every trans eighteen-year-old who is stuck living with unsupportive family [is] able to afford an apartment in a vibrant urban space with transit on a minimum wage job." www.liberalcurrents.com/feminism-wit...

When NIMBYs say that California is full and their cities can’t accommodate more housing, they are saying that queer people trying to get out of red states are on their own.

If the calculation goes If the fascists win, I am much much better off as a fascist, and screwed as an anti-fascist If the anti-fascists win, I am ok either way Then the "rational" choice (morals aside) is to go fascist. This incentive structure is incredibly dangerous, as we now see.

Every army is basically a logistics operation, with the goal of delivering small pieces of metal to people who don't want them.

this guy has no idea what the american military is (the most sophisticated logistics operation ever assembled in human history)

The only way these fascist chucklefucks make this work is by succeeding in manufacturing the *appearance* of inevitability, because they *do not* have the force or skill to win a straight fight. In short, the only weapon that can deliver them victory is you: the fool doomer whose nihilism is poison

Grandad, grandad. Why didn't you do anything to stop it all? Yeah in hindsight we should have done more. Also in foresight. But I think we just hoped someone else would sort it out for us. Felt like they should. But they must have been waiting for us to do it. Sorry.

The reason affluent media people are such suckers for “civility” is that the actual content of most politics has no real stakes for them personally. If you want to find these people’s true political feelings, mess with their money.

As an oldie (b.1970) who the culture has moved beyond, this feels right

General Liederkranz@generalliederkranz.bsky.social

to extend the Marx analogy, anyone over 30 trying to figure out the shooter's "ideology" is like a Habsburg policeman asking whether some revolutionary is Protestant or Catholic. That doesn't make sense any more, man! The ancient and venerable prejudices and opinions have all been swept away!

Legal medical marijuana finally comes to Slovenia, with a vote on recreational likely later this year

Perhaps the most poignant tragedy of the politically-motivated institutionalization of traditional practices is the fossilization of the tradition itself. The accumulated wisdom of the tradition can never be liberated, can never spread worldwide to help more people.

it is possible for a society to distribute quality education in an equitable, fair, and accessible way. it is not possible to distribute hierarchical elite power in a similar fashion, because that's not how elite power works.

Stunning version of my favorite book Was just looking for a Slovene translation this morning as a way to help learn that language, but it's yet to be translated

The Book of Disquiet by Fernando Pessoa, translated by Margaret Jull Costa. Published by the Half Pint Press, London, 2017. There were only 50 copies of this made for sale (out of a total run of 80), so I thought I’d share as much of it as I can. Numbering of fragments follows the 1982 edition.

This shit ain't nothin to me man. I'm in the White House snorting Special K and pitching continental missile defense. My self-driving scam long like the Trojan War. Trump has the logic and instincts of a rapist, because he's a rapist

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

“That really is his understanding of what a deal is: getting something over on the other guy. And that’s what we see here. To the extent there’s any plan it’s basically a power play; Trump is pulling on the economic powers of the world to bum rush them into a newly subservient global trading regime”

Also applies to individuals

But capture isn’t the end of the story. It’s the beginning of a reinforcement cycle that makes the institution more extreme over time, even without outside pressure. Here’s how that loop works.

#anectdata My ex-military dad (83) has just flipped from following right-wing coded "conspiracies" to reading / watching about Trump's long history with Russian money With any luck this realization will happen fast and wide

The idea of Europe coming together to use Russia's frozen assets to kickstart Europe's defence industry / economy in full support of Ukraine is the only non-personal hope I've had in weeks

One of the countless things I learned in writing the newest book in the Proof Series, published yesterday, is that Musk is losing his USDS/DOGE cases in almost court his team appears in, but is only publicizing the losses where the judge is nonwhite—or was appointed by Obama—to stoke racial violence

Digging out my MAGA index which looks at persistent trade imbalances [reminder: above 0 means Trump hates you; below 0 means you’re not on his shit list, at least not for this], you can see that some member states are more exposed than others:

The reality Putin wants us to ignore is this: Neither Russia nor the US can set the terms on which European troops enter Ukraine, or even whether they enter Ukraine. That is a sovereign decision by the Ukrainians and the Europeans. /24
