Ministers keep saying things like “get ready for war in 1,000 days” and journalists keep not saying things like “what do you mean” and “can you be more specific” www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home...

Which obviously means that Canadian Ukrainians are the very best of the best. [taps earpiece] ok there might be a few exceptions to that one.

Idle hands, devil make-work

I dropped this from something else I was writing but yes, my view is a major reason MPs put weight on casework is their other opportunities to do useful work are constrained, and if you changed that prioritises would shift docs.google.com/document/d/1...

There is something about the Labour Party which makes them unable to understand that employment regulation is regulation, employment bureaucracy is bureaucracy, and outside a few regulated industries, "business" experience of "red tape" is almost entirely what they call "improving worker's rights"

Jim Waterson@jim.londoncentric.media

As someone who runs a small business and for some reason pays my taxes…. Today’s “red tape” cut to company paperwork makes no real difference to me or my ability/desire to expand. As someone who investigates small business high street tax evasion… great news for candy stores and scam dropshippers!

To use the hackneyed phrase, there is, literally "nothing Labour about" reducing the administrative burden on business. Most of that administrative burden comes from trade union victories of the last century. There is no way past this.

I'll never donate to another politician, no matter how much I like them. Threw a few dollars to some candidates I'm proud to have supported and YEARS later I'm still getting multiple texts every day to go along with damn near hourly emails. They've poisoned this well.

Adam Bonica@adambonica.bsky.social

Once mass spam texts were made legal, younger donors vanished, leaving a grassroots fundraising machine that subsists on squeezing vulnerable seniors, some of whom give hundreds of times a day. It’s a horrific model. Consultants get generationally wealthy, and the party hollows out its future.

Often I ask myself, "who is the audience for this?". And all too often I reply, "troubled loners".

flyingrodent@flyingrodent.bsky.social

Britain’s top-selling far right politics magazine here telling its audience that broadcasters, officials and political leaders are plotting to kill them and their loved ones, and are concealing their intentions. What conclusions does Dougie here want readers to draw about What Must Now Be Done?

And I write this every time I post on this. The medication debate should *only* be decided by benefit of medication vs side effects. Moralizing has no place in this. And cost is irrelevant since amphetamine costs about as much as table salt to manufacture

Since this popped up again. ADHD and autism are not well defined. There is an arbitrary cutoff where a personality trait causes so much problems it becomes a diagnosis. Discussing what the "real" share afflicted is ridiculous. It is simply a function of where you put the cutoff

The quality journalism only the BBC can provide

Extremely weird behaviour from Gemini. Yesterday it was sorting data and producing pivot tables like a champ. Today it is back to "the shame of the big four", trying to gaslight me about which file I uploaded and producing spreadsheets with missing columns.

Well, I think we can say that the views of the family members of politicians and officials is now firmly on the menu for shenanigans. Even actual gangsters think twice before going after spouses and kids, so I’d say this is quite the escalation, here.

Desperate stuff Home Secretary originally argued (very misleadingly) care workers shouldn't be allowed to settle because their wages were so low that they'd be a fiscal cost. Now she's arguing they shouldn't be allowed to settle because they'd get better paid jobs www.thetimes.com/uk/politics/...

Also it is not credible to say that Holmes sincerely believed that her machine was eventually going to work. Her treatment of Ian Gibbons as chief biochemist is completely inconsistent with this.

Schultz was prepared to go against his own family to defend Elizabeth Holmes. Boies put his reputation on the way to try and threaten the Wall Street Journal. This is not something that can happen with just a few fibs, she manipulated and deceived some of the cleverest and most cynical people alive

I keep getting announcements from various universities about how they have some new initiative focused on how to have what they all are calling “difficult conversations”. Initially I was like hey sign me up, I am famous for my awkward conversations, but it turns out that’s not what they have in mind

Controversial and cancellable opinion; people don't half make a meal of listening to music on a speaker. If it's not something with foul language in the lyrics, it's just part of the background noise. Conversation is just as loud.

hehehe, just using Copilot to make a pivot table, it's like I don't even care that my spreadsheet has just been produced by the software and I didn't do the analysis myself by dragging the column and row headings.

(back in the olden days, people used to claim that you shouldn't download data from Bloomberg because you didn't really understand it unless you had typed it all in yourself, and that this was an essential stage to catch errors. I may indeed even been one of those people).

My hypothesis is that people are generally more predictable than they themselves would like to be, but less predictable than businesses would like them to be, and a lot of modern business is about building guiderails to increase that predictability ("personalisation" a big part of this)

The Super AGI: I'm sorry. I disassembled the entire human race molecule by molecule to make paperclips. That's on me. Me: what are you talking about, that's not true Super: you're right. That was a failure of alignment and I'm really sorry Me: you haven't made any paper clips at all have you

My folk theory of one aspect of Everything That Is Happening is that for a long time we had technologies of making publics visible that seemed to compress political debate down into mostly-one dimension, but (a) that turned out to be shit, and (b) when other technologies came along, it was disrupted

Rafe Meager (they/them)@economeager.bsky.social

right! i almost never see people discuss that voters simply facing multivariate policies or having multidimensional preferences undoes the intuitive logic of the median voter model. (because of this pref ordering, plus there's no single intuitive metric of distance in higher dimensional space)

I see people say this all the time and I think it’s just wrong in general. I don’t think you can make human skin out of pebbles. This is not because I think human skin is magic and pebbles are non-magic. I just think you can’t, in general, make everything out of everything.

A lot of people have genuinely cooked their brains watching atrocity videos and IDF tiktoks. Which is bad, and they shouldn't have done that to themselves, but ... let's be clear about who is to blame for the proliferation of war crime videos on social media, and I don't mean Elon Musk.

Just to be very explicit, my claim is that the one simplest and best explanation for this, which resolves any apparent strangeness entirely, is that whoever is “speaking” in LLM output is a fictional character, and the real life thing called an LLM is a machine for writing lil stories about that guy
