Glad to see CNN reporting on this. @jimacosta.bsky.social and I raised concerns about DHS potentially using a military-grade “heat ray.” After 20+ years in national security, I find this deeply troubling. A weapon designed to inflict intense pain. Against civilians? Why does DHS need this?

The fact that a trooper was texting ICE directly isn't a surprise. I've studied local immigration enforcement practices for nearly two decades and we've seen this before. But to see the practice made public in such a clear way firms up this work and should prompt calls for accountability.
