My husband texted me that my birthday present was arriving on Friday and I was upset because I asked for no presents. But then he said he got me what I most wanted and it is a DUMPSTER!!!!!! I am throwing away EVERYTHING! Trying to decide if I actually need a wardrobe or if I can live without one...

hooooo boy we don't like this no we don't > If you don't speak English, you need to find a different community. We cannot distinguish between AI-written and AI-translated. Since you don't speak English, you can't even verify yourself if it translated correctly. www.reddit.com/r/opensource...

Read the whole thread. Orual has fabulous insight into people.

I see autistic masking discourse going around again. Neurotypical social norms *are* understandable. Acting neurotypical is doable if high effort (my mom is like this). You can get a long way by being a kind of weird that doesn't rub people the wrong way, which is much easier. But it hinges on this:

Neurotypical social norms are not actually mostly arbitrary bullshit! The specific mechanics can be silly for the same reason the vagus nerve is silly, evolution over time, but they're mostly active "I am mindful that you are another person with feelings and I am not treading on them" signalling.

Most CS Lewis scholarship is junk scholarship, more about Evangelical talking points and literary conspiracy theories than any kind of honest engagement with his work. It's a sad, tragic misuse of his legacy.

I love C. S. Lewis for the most part but C. S. Lewis scholarship is decidedly Not For Me.

Remember that time I went to NYC for a job interview, when my husband asked how I was getting around, and I replied, “The Subway?” he was horrified and wanted to know I wasn’t worried I was going to get stabbed? Midwesterners man.

The man has hopped into a still-moving dolmuş in Kadıköy with me and trusted it to take us somewhere we wanted to go, but the NYC subway system apparently is a bridge too far.

God yes. The number of people who seem to confuse LotR for the Belgariad when criticizing it. Tolkien has many flaws as an author, but LotR is not remotely a by the numbers example of the genre it spawned except on the very very, very surface.

25. Many of the popular critiques of Tolkien are actually critiques of his imitators

It’s beautiful alliterative poetry time!!!

Check out the publications noted section in the new issue of Forgotten Ground Regained. There's all sorts of alliterative poetry out there! alliteration.net/info/publica... #alliterative #poetry #alliteration #poems #poetrylovers #poetrycommunity #poetryisnotdead #poetrysky #alliterativeverse

Torn between: 1. I am consuming too much sugar this early in the morning and 2. I am as wiggly as a toddler today so I deserve it.

I was going to start work on time but Levels by Avicii came on and activated my irresponsible young millennial so l will be late.

I have probably said this before and will certainly say it again: I am by far the dumbest, most ignorant person in my workplace and it is the BEST JOB EVER. Being surrounded by crazy, competent, brilliant geniuses is the most amazing thing.

The joy of playing D&D with my friends is almost not worth the misery of cleaning the trashed house and bathroom left behind by my husband “handling” bedtime.

There is toothpaste all over the counter, trash scattered around, bowls with a veneer of dried ice cream on the table. Come on guys.

Everything about this. Yes.

Anglicized Native American names are by far the best place names in the US. If we're going to go around randomly renaming things we should be switching to those. Consider how much better Manhattan is as a name than New York, or how much better Kentucky is than West Virginia.

There were 27 miles of rope used for rigging in Master & Commander. Modern rope naturally coils in the opposite direction of rope made during the Napoleonic wars. So the production paid a shop to make period accurate cordage.

We all know the "Viggo broke his toe" story but what's another movie fact you're personally compelled to bring up every time without prompting? For me, it's the fact that Robin Tunney is wearing a wig in The Craft because of having just shaved her head to save her job filming Empire Records.

Sooooo, no link yet, because something in this at triggered a review for approval for the RB Fan Art programme. I am somewhat mystified by this. Looking at their brand collaborations I have zero clues. Can someone more au fait with pop culture please suggest what the algorithm thinks I’m stanning? 🤷‍♀️

Also, I have a wee secret: when I created my nasturtiums design, it was part of a course I was doing, and one of the other things I created was this poster design with lettering... so, hey, if you like it, you can get that on a tee, or an apron, or a magnet, or a sticker. I'll have a link soon. 🏵️

Incidentally Lewis uses this as a reason people who read fantasy and other speculative fiction are at least slightly more literary in their tastes and appreciations than those who only read “realistic” books about modern, ordinary scenarios.

Enjoyers of Ayn Rand’s books remind me of nothing so much as the kind of unliterary readers C. S. Lewis described as engaging in “egoistic castle-building”. He’s really great about not deprecating types of readers for what or how they read but these are the definitely the least interesting readers.

This is not to say realistic literature is unliterary, it is just to say that people who dismiss dragons and spaceships in books as “unrealistic” are themselves unliterary.

It is so much easier to take care of yourself when you have a fabulous primary care physician.

I do not have the energy or time in my life to try care for a pet properly right now but I wish I could borrow a cat for a week or two.
