IN A WORLD OF HER OWN (2016) Acrylic on Canvas - 36" x 48" This painting arose from musing on an interview that Stanley Kubrick gave in 1968, a source of inspiration I have gone back to over the years, revisiting comments made by the director. #art

Dutch PhD theses require a summary. I wrote mine last minute while sitting in a shopping mall (it was 40°C outside and malls have AC). Now I checked it again and it's... surprisingly good. Recommending shopping malls for focused writing

Need the “FBI Agent Posting” meme template but for NSA

We get a subexponential time algorithm for 3SAT and apparently the models couldn’t even find one little cryptanalysis result. I guess cryptographers have just been killing it!

Koenig taught me the difference between "everyone's the hero of their own story" and "villains should be sympathetic." Bester was an advanced class in how to portray evil with depth without losing moral clarity or portraying horrific behavior as justified or sympathetic.

RIP to a legend

My pal Danielle Koenig shared that her father Walter Koenig passed away last night at age 90. A performer whose kindness and warmth shone through the screen. He will be well remembered.

Maturing as a software engineer doesn’t mean writing fewer Horrors, it means knowing when to write A Horror and how to construct the proper containment zone around it

I once inherited a python system that handled about $100m in ARR. It was a single Django class that was 25k lines long and had zero tests or docs that always called out to MySQL and postgres via fork+exec rather than actually using those client libraries

Turns out the perfect personal advice is often “why don’t you think just a little harder and ask me again in 2 minutes if you’re really stuck” but people don’t really want that as a product

William Gillis 🏴@rechelon.bsky.social

Regardless of the failings of present LLMs, I find myself increasingly thinking about the proverbial earpiece that offers perfect personal advice and how people use it first on only a few things but increasingly on everything until their brains shrivel away into nothing but relays for the earpiece.

We should increase access to G&T programs so smart kids who don’t have parents championing them to the school district can get an education that meets their needs, not handcuff the ones who do so they hate school and burn out

Annalee@flowerhorne.com

There are smart kids at all income brackets. But the less money your parents have, the less likely it is that your gifts will be noticed & nourished That's down to bias, and how much power your parents have to fight for you G&T != Smart, and smart extremely doesn't equal getting labeled "gifted."

Here's a classic of speculative poetry: Science fiction author Poul Anderson's "Route-Song of the Winged Folk" from his novel "The People of the Wind". An invented stanza form to fit an alien culture, and content and metaphors fitting for a species of winged hunter. alliteration.net/poetry/route...

Okay Star Wars lore / interpretation question - is there an actual reason frog lady can’t let her spawn go through hyperspace or is this the Star Wars equivalent of “wi-fi gives me headaches”

Thomas Dickerson@elfprince13.mumak.app

S1 of Mando is still basically unmatched for pacing and narrative execution across all seasons of Star Wars tv

I think my most centrist-coded take is that unions should neither have special legal protections relative to individual bargaining nor be specifically legally discriminated against relative to individual bargaining

William Gillis 🏴@rechelon.bsky.social

My most Sakai-coded trait is my absolute disdain for those activists obsessed with the american white working class. When I was homeless as a child it was members of the working class who sneered and spat on me. Workers are not uniquely pressing moral subjects nor uniquely strategically privileged.

We should maximize the amount of proof we can get out of AI while the money cannon is on. It's like early days of Uber, except the benefits are 100x more tangible. A fully-verified hw+sw stack? That's like gold everyone can share w/out having to divide. Generational opportunity.

Yglesias might have been the first account I ever muted on Twitter

Mom for Ghoulberty👻@fakegreekgrill.bsky.social

Yglesias really gets under my skin, because he paints himself as practical rather than idealistic, and a lot of idealists tell at him for not being idealistic, which reinforces the idea that he is just so practical so he doesn't have to face that he is also a dumbass.

All recipes should be in hexadecimal in which case a tablespoon is 1/10 of a cup and 1/100 of a gallon.

Base 2 measurements are better for the digital age, base 10 is outdated

Dara Lind@daralind.bsky.social

As I get older I have become a pigheaded USA chauvinist on at least one thing and that is: the metric system. I KNOW it makes conversions easier but at this point I’ve successfully integrated standard measures into the way I engage with the world so SHUT UP. MURRICA.

So I think LLMs are bad at prose in exactly the same way they are good at writing code - overall order / narrative structure don’t really matter, and every concept that matters gets defined in relatively narrow local scopes and then redefined as necessary over and over again

See, *this* is how you maintain APIs for older versions of mobile apps - most apps are just like "sorry, you can't make this payment you need to do right now or pick up this parcel, first you need to update your 3-weeks-old version of the app over cellular and log in again"

The bugs were always already there and the guys with a $250M SIGINT enabling budget are probably pissed they got fixed
