NEW: We obtained recordings of 160+ emergency calls made from or about an immigration detention center where three people died within six weeks. “They will not give them medical treatment,” one caller said, seeking help for a detainee with kidney stones.

It may affect fewer people INITIALLY, but it presages a fundamental shift in our system of government that will eventually worsen the lives of every man, woman, and child in the future United States, or whatever is left of it. It indicates a transition from democracy to tyranny.

Trump official says under Oz's 2-year tenure, ~40% of health insurance was fraudulent! Oz should be fired immediately!

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Dr Oz on ACA "fraud" -- "Of the people who signed up, 40% never use the insurance. Let me ask you, John, you have health insurance -- do you use it once a year? In Obamacare right now 40% of the people ostensibly signed up never use the insurance ... we have a lot of fake people on the policies"

The Supreme Court Gives Donald Trump Full Control Over the Executive Branch, Except the Part of It that Impacts Their Retirement Portfolios

There's a set of policies that function as a Chesterton test. If someone tears them down without addressing the reason they were created, you can be confident they are not making good decisions. Screwworms is a Chesterton test: huge benefits, minor costs. Massive DOGE failure

GSS's "Some people say that people get ahead by their own hard work; others say that lucky breaks or help from other people are more important. Which do you think is most important?" seems like it would track this. There's a spike, but it doesn't match a nihislistic worldview

To me this is by far the top explanation for Gen Z nihilism. If you don't brand and commodify every aspect of your life, you're falling behind. If you're not getting one over on the next guy in crypto or prediction markets, you're a sucker. Beyond Marx's alienation of labor--alienation of personhood

Gallup tracks ethics sentiment by profession (filtering to age requires a subscription). Outside of a drop in trust in healthcare professionals and cops since covid, things look relatively normal

Some notes - Other is a volunteered response. It would only track extreme increases in nihilism. "Luck" still seems like a reasonable proxy - There's how much do you think other's cheat surveys for students but no good longitudinal ones

There's a corollary, any rigorous attempt to recreate a "true" BLS metric ends up recreating the initial metric from first principles. It's the bigmac price index, with crowdsourcing, and all other types of items, that is based on what people say they buy every week

I cannot emphasize enough that, when you look into BLS methodology, they will generally be a lot more sophisticated than you think they are.

Trying to change Will Stancil's perception that "social media can change people's perceptions" through a social media post is a bold approach.

Internet discourse is: "This out of touch billionaire says Millennials are broke because they spend too much on avocado toast" followed by "Why avocado toast prices are irreconcilably bankrupting me"

"What if the data said something more ambiguous" Well then it would be more ambiguous, thats not what the data says though! This isn't even data analysis, its just "imagine the data better matched my priors"

I initially read it as fight more against current policies which seemed unnecessary (for California, right now, given a lack of state actions that seem possible) and answered Not too important. However! My answer changes drastically if Trump's actions change.

It seems very possible temporarily low prices could be a combination of: - Until the shock hits, storage is limited and expensive so near term prices have to clear - Betting against current prices is very expensive as the above requires you to be right about direction and the timing

I looked into a gonzo First Things essay that argues women are using the government "prop up" their employment. It's wrong, but it's wrong in an interesting way. Men actually increased thier employment *within* industry, but female industries grew faster. newsletter.mikekonczal.com/p/the-girlbo...

newsletter.mikekonczal.comThe Girlboss Takeover Has a Data ProblemThe sub-industries that already employed women just grew faster.
