Appropriate seeing this today, as I've been waiting all day on a UPS delivery because the thing I ordered weeks ago was delivered to who-knows-where and the seller had to send me a second one. No idea where the first one ended up, but this has gotta stop

Gianmarco Soresi@gianmarcosoresi.bsky.social

Delivery gone wrong

So I just got a email that's a pitch for podcast services that looks very similar to the iLands AI agent emails I got last month but from a gmail account and without an AI disclosure. All the same beats and style as the AI agent had. I guess this "is that a real human" vibe is Halloweeny?

(he's been a longtime fan of the station and also feels there should be much more love out there for orchestral and chamber music - which is sentiment I think we can all get behind)

Not addressed here - too much water on the Killer Klowns maze (got through 5 mazes last night). Though Ozzy as more of a tribute is a good way to sum that one up And I still miss the Bill and Ted show before it was canceled like a decade ago.

And if you do a "Halloween stuff in SoCal" trip, you could either add a couple other theme parks w/ Halloween stuff or a Halloween-only thing with either Delusion or Reign of Terror. Both impressive haunts that are open most of October.

I think this has made me respect The Exorcist II a lot more now. Despite that Joe Dante described the opening weekend atmosphere as "palpable sense of betrayal"

Have You Seen This?@haveyouseen.us

If you have access to TCM, I highly recommend BOORMAN AND THE DEVIL, David Kittredge's 2025 documentary on the reviled sequel to THE EXORCIST. It's a charming tribute to the exact kind of movie we're so fascinated by on this podcast www.tcm.com/watchtcm/tit...

I suspect the reason that UPS has a name that is shorter than USPS is because 25% of my packages that are sent via UPS never actually arrive

I had this same experience a little while back trying to find a song based off the lyrics "Why are you haunting me" and got some weird trash response from Google rather than just the search I wanted

Paul Guinnessy@paulguinnessy.bsky.social

"I think this was the moment I, the frog, noticed the pot had been boiling for a while. In what universe is it Google’s job to console me and be an empathetic listener rather than just find what I am looking for on the internet?" I've noticed this too. Google's search is so bad it's a crapshoot.

Incidentally... for the curious: the reason ended up being that one 1 was a string and one 1 was a number.

I've spent way too much of today trying to track down, ultimately, why it is 1 does not equal 1.

I feel like I shouldn't be learning, this late in the game, that the newest Attack of the Killer Tomatoes movie apparently has John Astin back.

Decided to do an overlay of the current Bouquet Fire north of the city of Santa Clarita to the 2007 Buckweed Fire, which I believe was the last large fire near it. The Bouquet fire started just north of the northern edge of the Buckweed fire and so far is staying along/north of that edge

I think one of the signs of how society makes no sense is that a company can make a square frozen pizza and then have the audacity to say that it is 5 servings.

More games need personality matrices where it'll just get a feeling of what you're like then take care of dialogue for you rather than constant dialogue choices. Makes the rest of a more relaxing experience for me to focus on the gameplay aspects and storyline. And it's on sale now, too

Always a shame to me when a theme park closes, but I'm glad I had a chance to check out Wild Waves some years back

On point B, the NASA Exoplanet Archive typically serves ~10-20TB of data per month. In July it jumped to 70TB. In August it jumped to 600TB. So either our user base organically grew *30x* in two months (... unlikely), OR the bots have taken over already.

Chris Lintott @chrislintott.bsky.social

On similar lines, if we’re not careful: A. Scientific journals will only accept submissions from established researchers working within institutions. B. Data we’ve spent ages making open will be hidden to avoid the expense of continued download by bots.

People that think sports superstitions are entirely baseless should do some reading into physics and the observer effect. Sometimes they're just a misapplication of things.

A very respectful way for the editor to say that these authors are utterly wasting everybody's time and are destroying trust that holds our research community together

Nihar Shah did a heroic experiment for TMLR: he spent 20-25 hours over two weeks interviewing authors of seemingly low-quality submissions about their own papers. He confirmed what we all suspected: people submitting these papers have *no idea* what is going on in them.

TMLR has faced a deluge of submissions, necessitating stricter desk rejection policies due to limited reviewer capacity Co-EiC Nihar Shah reached out to authors of 10 papers slated for desk reject. Could they answer questions about their *own* submission? medium.com/@TmlrOrg/ask...

I got an email from Tubi mentioning how many items are currently on my watchlist, and I have rarely felt quite so judged from an automated email. 502 feels a lot bigger when it's in the subject line

The rate this is suggesting for 2026 hits a point of being hard for me to process: "the fraction of astro-ph papers whose analyzed prose shows a language-model trace reaches 54% in 2025, up from 20% in 2024, and it reaches 87% in the first half of 2026." (errors removed for bluesky readability)

Yvette Cendes@whereisyvette.bsky.social

Getting feisty on the ArXiv this morning- "More than half of recent astronomy papers are written with language-model assistance" arxiv.org/abs/2609.10664 That said, if their model is actually correct the authors ought to go into the "check for cheating" racket, as that's a huge growth space rn 🔭

Incredibly fortunate and grateful to have had @jackiekashian.bsky.social and Andy on. She's been one of my fav comedians for over two decades now, and while most of her comedy isn't about video games, I haven't heard material about video games that resonated with my ties to video games like hers did

And this came with the great bonus that her husband Andy worked on the release of the game we talked about, so we got some great insight into the game and Jaymo got to geek out over the Dreamcast game The Floigan Bros, which Andy was a designer on. Ended up something big for both of us.

I have her albums/specials and had seen her perform live, so I've been very nervous about this whole thing and she has been great. Which isn't a surprise given her work, but is very nice. I think maybe the "never meet your heroes" people need to be fans of cooler people.

I think this is a good time to mention the book "No One May Ever Have The Same Knowledge Again: Letters to Mount Wilson Observatory 1915-1935", edited by Sarah Simons, and is a collection of some of the sorts of letters Mt Wilson was getting for two decades (I've only read a few from it)

AI is certainly making all of this much worse, but every scientist you know, or at least all the physicists, astronomers, mathematicians, and climate scientists, gets tons of emails from men, especially engineers, who think they are Einstein. It’s sad and complicated and messy.
