😁 Please faites tourner à vos potes astrophoto👏

Sh2-157 / The Lobster Claw Nebula 🦞 🔭 Quick processing after coming back from Normandy weekend. I'm pretty happy with the result considering the poor skies I had that night. I think there's more signal to reveal, so I'll reprocess it. (To be continued).

We made the NY Times!!! 🤩 🔭🧪🎢

Jonathan O'Callaghan@astrojonny.bsky.social

I'm back in The New York Times, with news that we might have spotted a first magnetic field on an exoplanet! If so it would be more than 2,000 times stronger than Earth's, and could be a key tool in future hunts for habitability. Exciting! www.nytimes.com/2026/09/29/s...

One for the record books 🏅 ESO's Very Large Telescope Interferometer has discovered the fastest known star in our galaxy. Named S301, it orbits Sagittarius A* — the supermassive #BlackHole at the centre of the #MilkyWay — reaching speeds of 25 000 kilometres per second. 🔭 🧪 1/3

Full #Moon & #astrophotography don't make a good mix, except on star clusters or emission nebulae...so here goes for the Persei double cluster (NGC884 & NGC869) and the Horse Head #nebula (IC434) in H-alpha. Images shot yesterday. Aren't those cute 😊? What do you see @kat-astro-bot.bsky.social ?

If @science.org is covering it, I guess I should share something here- we have for the first time definitively detected radio emission from a planet around another star! 🔭🧪🎢 What does this mean? Details in thread! (But TL;DR- still not aliens) 🧵 www.sciencenews.org/article/exop...

36h team effort on #NGC7217 and a HII region not usually photographed (but it is in the Finkbeiner Survey of H-alpha galactic emissions though - much more coarse though). #astrophotography is full of surprises 😇 What do you see @kat-astro-bot.bsky.social ? www.astrobin.com/l4vyua/

Stacking amateur #astrophotography subs to get a better SNR also leads to photometry like here on the star HD189733 right next to M27, and witness an exoplanet transit that happened somewhere around 1962 😊 (09/19) Poke @pahcas.bsky.social 😇 who suggested this idea 😋 AIJ and HOPS curves attached!

I thought I'd never be able to capture this faint #astrophotography target but then I discovered the wonderful world of Newtonian scopes 🙂. This is the Bat (SH2-129) and Squid #nebula (OU-4) after 20h of integration time, shot from my backyard. What do you see @kat-astro-bot.bsky.social ?

In one of my picture of the eclipse, taken a little bit before sunset I have a spot on the Moon. It is probably an artefact but there is a slight chance that it is the flash of a meteorite smashing the moon. May I ask you to check your pictures for a similar spot around 18:50 UTC ? 🧪 🔭

The more subs (22h in this case), the better the SNR, and more bubbly stuff pops out like the Soap Bubble nebula near the Crescent Nebula. This is a collaborative #astrophotography work with my friend Alex who's not on BS. What do you see @kat-astro-bot.bsky.social ?

I'm dazzled by the photon collecting power of an f/4 Newtonian scope with a 200mm mirror...this is just one night of #astrophotography 🔭📷 subs for the Dark Shark nebula (about 5 1/2 hours of LRGB data shot this past night from my backyard) 🦈. What do you see @kat-astro-bot.bsky.social ?

Quick #astrophotography trial on the galaxy NGC1961. It still needs more subs in luminance - just 3.5 hrs so far, but the satellite trails (a bit enhanced so they pop out) seem to say it's already too much 😢. It's crowded up there, stop sending #satellites 🥵 Where is this @quantumkat.bsky.social ?

Thousands of stars are playing hide and seek in this 🔭📷 #astrophography of the dusty surroundings of LDN1082 🤩. 12 hours of integration shot from my backyard, supervized from my couch (feeling kind of fancy with a remote setup of my own ☺️). Can you plate-solve this @kat-astro-bot.bsky.social ?

Averaging individual frames and using a rejection algorithm can get rid of those pesky satellite trails to get a nice #astrophotography pic... Here's NGC2655 without pollution, shot over several nights from my backyard. What do you see @kat-astro-bot.bsky.social ?

Here is roughly 8h of luminance data (over three nights this past week) with this #astrophotography of NGC2655 done without any rejection algorithm. There's a slight satellite trail pollution don't you think? This is sad, knowing that some companies are willing to make things even worse 😢.

A thing about the "AI" debate in science is that I almost never see anyone asking, "well sure LLMs or whatever can be useful sometimes—but what if we put all the money spent on 'AI' into hiring more humans, furthering other technologies & invest into research helping scientists science better"
