NEW: Macmillan staff tell @adamm0rgan.bsky.social the publisher threw a party for AI tool NOA ("No Ordinary Assistant"), complete with a light-up display and donuts spelling "NOA IS HERE." They say it was "terrible" and useless—NOA was killed about two years later: www.wired.com/story/macmil...

wired.comMacmillan Staff Say the Publisher Threw a Party for a Workplace AI Assistant That Was Later KilledWorkers tell WIRED that NOA—or “No Ordinary Assistant”—was unhelpful. Bestselling authors also say AI is ruining their relationships with Big Five publishers.

I spent a week away from the internet except for the strictly necessary. It does good to the body and the mind. Especially when the media keep platforming demented, miserable and evil men and women who don't live in reality.

I'm very tired. I'm not one bit interested in the present or the future. I'm taking refuge in all the books I haven't read published before 2023. At this point when you read that Meta's little AI critter is the most downloaded app, that people don't care if a book was written with AI. I'm done.

It's going to take so much to disentangle from the U.S.

BC Parks charges campers a $6 “transaction fee,” $5 surcharge for using its call centre, and $6 fee for changes and cancellations. In 2023, it processed over 366,000 reservations—meaning reservation fees alone brought in more than $2.1 million. https://thewalrus.ca/the-ticketmaster-of-camping/

This is such a wake up call www.lapresse.ca/dialogue/chr... If you are Candian and you care about the environment, the economy and the future, I urge you to use a translation app to read this column. What Carney said in the past vs whatt his government is doing today @mark-carney.bsky.social

When I see a useful extension, I can't hide my glee 😁

A developer made a browser extension called "Knockoff" that shows what a wasteland Amazon truly is by filtering out brands like "GODONLIF" "EHEYCIGA," ROTTOGOON," and sponsored products. Useful and illustrative even if you don't use Amazon www.404media.co/knockoff-bro...

I decided that when and if I must occasionally use any of the LLMs I will develop a very detached, an almost household -appliance-instruction-manual writing "style". It's very funny. My human-speak will be reserved for humans. This is where we are.

If you are Canadian, you must be aware of the cheeky amendments they make to this law to get it passed. Write to your representatives to halt it.

Canada’s Bill C-22 is riddled with privacy problems that affect millions of people. Instead of jamming it though on an arbitrary deadline, it should be debated fully. www.eff.org/deeplinks/2...

ahhhh so good!

And yet, managers, CEOs and governments seem to blindly trust AI agents.

This is hilarious and terrifying theshamblog.com/an-ai-agent-... An ai agent submitted some code to an Open Source project, got rejected by a human developer, then the ai proceeded to generate a hit piece on him. The comments though.. wahh. who are people, who are bots?

canada continuing to drop the ball on taking tech policy seriously

blair@blairaf.com

Canada did a consultation on a new national AI strategy, formed an expert task force to write 32 reports, then used AI to analyze the responses & reports. The result is a summary that strings together 100s of vague action items & flattens nuance and policy trade-offs into false consensus

Not to be dramatic but I'm struggling more and more with the idea that life has any sort of meaning. I question human nature constantly and inch more to the idea that things will never generally improve. Six years ago we had a chance to veer towards better behaviours but now, it's plain psychosis.

I’ve been waiting for an album to blow mi mind.
