1/9 Are you one of those people who is always late? 🌐🐦 If a migratory bird starts late, does that delay follow it through the year, or can it get back on schedule? We asked this using tracking data from 2,324 birds of 83 species across six continents.🧵 Paper: doi.org/10.1038/s415...

@vchandra.bsky.social is starting his lab at the Crick to work on the exciting question of how early brains evolved and how they work. Vikram is fantastic (I had the privilege to work with him for a while), and there’s good news: He’s hiring! Check out the ad below and consider applying.

Vikram Chandra@vchandra.bsky.social

I am excited to announce that I will start the Brain Origins Lab at the Crick in March 2027! Using acoels as a model system, the lab will study how animal brains evolve, and how innovations in brain organisation enable new computational abilities and the evolution of complex behaviour.

sadly yet another fatality of a gull-billed tern youngster. this time #fontes area, please share widely again with your network #ornithology #conservation #terns

Common Tern Project@commonternproject.bsky.social

It seems more accessible than the location of H36, so here I go again: do we know anyone in the Fontes area who would be willing to try and find the bird and/or tag and send us pictures and the device? We can cover costs for postage and a few kilometers.

Excited to share my second published PhD chapter out now in Current Biology! @cellpress.bsky.social 🧵 below but tldr: birds are known to use the magnetic field to navigate. But is magnetism the whole story? We find that an amazing avian navigator doesn’t seem to rely on magnetic cues at all.

Oxford Biology@biology.ox.ac.uk

Long-distance navigation is no easy feat, but for some seabirds it can involve traversing hundreds of kilometres of open ocean New research led by @plewin.bsky.social shows that even if Manx shearwaters can sense the earth’s magnetism, they don't rely on it to get home 👇

To the birding community: one of our GPS-tagged redshanks was predated during its migration in France. We would be very greatful if we could have the GPS tag back and get as much information as possible from the bird! This is the last position: maps.app.goo.gl/jCWDXDfhnJPT... @genmig.bsky.social
