Data point for anyone interested: Private flu vaccine £25, private COVID vaccine £75, just walked in, short wait. (Prices and procedure may be different at your pharmacy.) Not a big deal and probably worth the trip if you want to prepare for winter.

“The problem is that most governments are by now infused with big-tech aligned employees, contractors and consultants. These people aren’t necessarily corrupt, but if you’ve delivered services for 25 years based on Microsoft platforms, it becomes very tricky to think about anything else”

this is not a problem you can fix with calm, reasoned debate. you can't even fix it by improving people's lives with policy. there is no clear, proven, non-violent solution to this issue. finding one is the most significant problem of our age.

Like we don’t have political disagreements, we have disagreements on the nature of reality

The wild thing is that the owners are pretty much intentionally burning it to the ground because they've somehow convinced themselves that "make 1000% or higher profit margins and everyone loves you for doing it" is a shitty business model and they can do better.

Such a weird quirk that MPs or candidates are not required to live in the constituency they want to represent. Now, such requirements are typically easy to cheat where they exist – just rent a small flat, register, and never go there.

ajlowton.bsky.social@ajlowton.bsky.social

It really annoys me that the green leaflets imply that Polanski lives here. He doesn’t.

But the first thing that people trying to defend the (insane) British system will go on about is the "constituency link". Which is not a thing! Not even on paper. No one is even asking you to have ever visited the place.

Merkel's total refusal to ever acknowledge a problem or try to fix anything is kind of radical in her own way. But that's very different from actively working towards a totalitarian fascist takeover.

John Springford@johnspringford.bsky.social

Perfectly legitimate to criticise Merkel's policy record, which is awful. It is just stupid to claim that she was more extreme than the AfD, however.

Pretty brutal for anyone who still thinks mealy-mouthed centrism and "compromise" with the far right is the answer to anything.

Naomi Smith@pimlicat.bsky.social

Only one in 20 people said they wanted the UK Government to propose joining the EU Single Market (6%) or a Customs Union (5%), making the proposals the least popular of any UK-EU relationship tested, even behind further loosening ties with the EU (11%), or maintaining the status quo (8%).

I quite like “runs at least twice per hour until at least midnight” as a baseline definition of a real transit line. It's a useful level of service, not an unreasonable demand for more budget constrained systems, and excludes nonsense once-a-day vanity lines.

2) and 3) are intimately linked, in that the BBC (the organisation that really matters in the modern environment) treats 'claims by rival parties' as the operating frame for how it covers everything. The failure from Labour and the Conservatives to say 'this stuff is bad' is really, really bad.

Very funny case of economist brain; his argument is, basically: But if you ban this, people can't do it anymore! Surely an unintended side effect of the policy? Here's the thing though: they banned it because they don't want people doing it. That's the policy.

A lot of health systems around the world are really reluctant to pay for this shot; at minimum, it's usually age gated. If this link is confirmed, the reduction in CV issues alone would probably financially justify giving it to everyone, before even taking into account the shingles savings.

The first paragraph quoted is particularly delusional. Brussels has been clear that Youth Mobility is the minimum they need to see just to show the UK is finally willing to have an adult conversation. There are no concessions to be had “in exchange” for YM. It's just the ticket to get in the door.

David Henig@davidheniguk.bsky.social

Interesting framing. Not possible for current UK-EU negotiations to "fix things in an amicable way that will add percentage points to our growth". That could only be done by the UK changing its red lines, which the government has ruled out. www.ft.com/content/4ec5...

And the weaselly wording of “a more generous offer on Youth Mobility” sounds to me like they're saying, we think we can get those big concessions for only pretending to agree to YM, but still stopping short of actually signing up. Guys. Grow up.

A pet peeve of mine about the "entitled" language is that big tech aggressively advertised these perks when hiring, and IMO workers are in the most literal sense of the word entitled to things they were expressly promised when recruited.

crystal@cim.bsky.social

I very much share your ire for the fully insulated tech bro with unrealistic expectations of pampering; that said I do feel the "entitled tech worker" narrative primarily serves the interests of management. as silly as it sounds, we should be building a world where everyone gets break room Snapple

One only needs to look at the outcomes of 40 years of neoliberalism to see that ending 40 years of neoliberalism would be a mistake.

As a semi-frequent traveler, I don't really understand this advice. On the inbound, UK carriers will usually only open the bag drop at T-2h. So if you arrive 4h early, you're just standing around until the counter opens. Passport control is after security, this won't buy you any extra time there.

The weird entitlement of British expats is never not funny. What do you mean I don't get the "people who live in Britain" rate just because I don't live in Britain?!

Anyway I see the same thing happening in the Climate Doom people. There's this very visceral and convincing version of the world that they had envisioned that would require some very painful moral choices to adapt to, and it turns out "batteries + solar" are basically able to fix the problem.

Any "you can be here, but we won't support you" solution has an obvious "and then what?" problem. Just be here, homeless, and starving? Beggars and rough sleepers everywhere would be immensely unpopular, it smells of failed state. Putting them in camps is much more expensive than normal benefits.
