Evangelist Whitney Lynn says she preaches on planes because she loves “a captive audience.” She's not alone. It's becoming a trend. If spreading your message requires listeners who can't escape, maybe it's not as compelling as you think. www.friendlyatheist.com/p/christian-...

Which airlines allow this? Aren't you required to follow the instructions of the crew. Seems like they could tell her politely to take her seat and stop harassing the other passengers. If she complies fine, if she doesn't she's met by cops at the gate & gets banned. Seems simple to handle.

She'll sue for religious discrimination, push it to SCOTUS and because they're corrupt as it gets they'll get special treatment making it that not only can you not stop them but it only applies to Christians.

I admire your cynicism 🙂 But I sure hope you're wrong – nominally the constitution is on our side, the government can't favor one religion over another, but individuals can (I think). That aside, there really are basic safety & sanity issues that might prevail even with this court.

Well, again, SCOTUS is corrupt as it gets and they have repeatedly ruled recently that christianity gets priority over everything else and others don't matter. So until we expand it and/or impeach most of 'em, christians are literally trying to get sued to go to them and get a favourable rule.

Imagine the applause in response to hearing “Hello everyone, this is your captain speaking. At this time I’m going to ask you to please fasten your seatbelts. We’ll be dropping to an altitude in which we can open a door and push this bitch out without causing explosive decompression of the cabin.”

Please try this on a flight I am on Air travel is among my least favorite experiences to engage in and at no point does your purchase of a ticket become a license to spout your insane bullshit and force it upon everyone else against their will

congrats you all are now going to listen to the 10 hour loop of shiny from moana as loud as my bag speaker gets. music stops when they do. convince THEM to shut up abd sit down

This will stop when everyone who gets stuck in these situations collectively demand refunds from the airlines by immediately going to the ticket counter the minute they get off the plane. And calling customer service, writing emails, etc.

I'm with Heather. If this happened while I was on a plane, it would be traumatizing and I would make that be known. Loudly. Holding people captive against their will is not evangelizing. It's assault.

I would literally stack noise cancelling headphones over noise cancelling earbuds. But maybe only after confronting her for forcing everyone to listen to her drivel. These people don’t deserve it to go the way they want: a quiet, captive audience

No doubt that she'll claim that she has a federally protected right under the First Amendment to profess her faith. And she has, the other passengers also have a protected right under the same Amendment to tell her loudly snd frequently to "Go Fuck Herself".

There's a little freak out from the everyone is a communist party who is more freaked out about atheist leanings bc OH MAH GAWD what'd we EVER DO if we didn't have a magical man to think REAL HARD & WISH for special favors from? Maybe realize it is PEOPLE who do all the bad/good GOD gets credit for.

Given the climate situation, no one but organ transplant couriers, weather researchers, and others with serious tasks should be flying, anyway. No matter how many times BP said "carbon footprint."

If this happened on my flight, I'd be asking the flight attendant (loudly) what the airline's policy is on preventing harassment based on protected characteristics... Remember folks, (lack of) religion is a protected characteristic. Flight attendants hate these people and need cover to remove them.

No, download a Disney song and play it louder than their voice. You know these people are recording themselves to upload to Youtube.

There is an easy solution to this, reverse this on them, they can’t leave either so start asking logical questions about Christianity, like how is god omnipotent and omnibonevolent at the same time as leaving innocent Christians to be harmed on earth. What are they gonna do, walk away?

It's a question that has been asked like forever to every priest on earth and they obviously have an answer. No, the only things to do is not interacting and reporting if possible.

Every passenger signs a contract when buying a ticket. Airlines reserve the strict right to remove or penalize anyone who causes a disturbance, acts offensively, or creates a nuisance. If this happens on your flight, politely tell crew you're victim of abuse by a priest & ask them to stop it.

"Sit. The. Fuqq. Down. And. Be. Quiet. Alternatively, "Since being held captive in a plane for messages no one asked to hear is now acceptable, I'll be casting witchcraft spells at people who evangelize on airplanes."

FuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck that shit!

Well, if I'm on the flight, I hope they love to argue! I was raised First Congregationalist & now I'm an atheist so, I DID read the bible thank you so very much, you evangelical twit I'd start with something Stephen Fry brought up with a bishop: explain an omnipotent god vs bone cancer in children

Not just omnipotent but all loving too Which wouldn’t be a contradiction if things like cancer didnt exist. Except they do, meaning God isnt omnipotent or isnt all loving, since he doesn’t have the ability to help or he chooses not to help, therefore contradicting the bible and the word of God.

Unfortunately rational argument has an approx 1 in a billion chance of effecting change in their approach. They'll just take it as a sign that they are justified in their actions. Me, I'm packing duck/gaffer tape in carry on...

Flight crews, like most public facing jobs, have seen increased harassment and abuse from customers while getting less protections from their own workplace. The person who calmly gets her to stop will be fired by the time they land. Therefore why do the right thing? I hate our culture 🫠

My only objection to that idea is that however much this chud deserves such consequences, the practice of quietly banning people from flying at a corporate or governmental whim scares me, I'd much rather have some sort of punishment process that is open and involves due process.

Businesses can ban people for anti-social behavior, surely? Like if someone did that at a restaurant, it would be fine to ban them from the restaurant, right? I don't see why an airline would be any different. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

The crews probably aren’t because the preachers aren’t violent in the traditional sense and they know they will be harassed to the ends of the earth when they end up being posted online. They are union, but the union can only do so much.

I had someone do this to me on a plane. I said no to the person repeatedly to tell them I was not interested in pursuing the conversation (they were seated diagonally across from in one row ahead of me). Finally, an older gentleman turned around and told the person he was going to report them.

I think this is one of the only circumstances where it's acceptable to start a group sing of Country Roads or Sweet Caroline. Just drown that nonsense out until she's convinced she's on satan's plane

Would also be fun to grab some water and sprinkle it on them while shouting the power of Christ compels you over and over again just to see the confusion

The next time I fly, I may have atheistic sermon ready on note cards to read at top "Bitch, go ahead, I studied acting and can throw my voice to the back of a 600-seat auditorium" volume. Better yet: I'll have a QR code to a song book, too. If they want inflight service, let's give them one.

Remembering the MRFF story I uncovered about how - maybe in 2005 - an evangelist dragged an entire PA system into the Pentagon courtyard to preach to employees eating their lunches. Few people, even those who should, know about this.

I don’t remember where I read it, but back when flying was cheap, I do remember reading about authors who would book round trips to, e.g., Melbourne or Hong Kong, for the express purpose of getting some uninterrupted time to write.

Agreed💯 As a Millennial, Columbine & 9/11 cast a strong shadow over my formative years I grew up w/constant terrorism, shootings, bombings, etc If someone on a plane w/me pulls this💩… …my instinct is to immediately tackle her… …shout “hijacker”… …& whale on her til I fully disable the attacker

When I was a kid, I memorized the first two verses of "Life is a Rock (but the Radio Rolled Me)". If this happens near me, I will recite them, loudly, using the full power of my theater-trained lungs and vocal chords. "B.B. Bumble and the Stingers,Mott the Hoople, Ray Charles Singers..."

Planes in flight are not public spaces, there is no right to free speech on a plane. The passengers have a contract with the airline which expressly or impliedly includes provisions for reasonable comfort and security, and non interference by other passengers. Allowing speechifying by passengers 1/2

Breaches contractual duties to passengers B,…ZZZ, etc, Enterprising lawyer on board should signup their plane-fellows to a class action filed by Wi-Fi to court at destination seeking immediate injunctive relief pending arrival and damages. 2/2

I have flight attendant family and apparently enforcement against these simpletons is weak to say the least. They should be restrained and gagged for the flight's duration. If I'm in the mood for fiction i'd rather open a book than have it barked into my face. Who do these people think they are?

Indeed. Drunken singing is not generally permitted on flights, and if obstreperous passengers refuse to obey the lawful orders of the captain to behave and refrain, then in the last resort captain will arrange for the arrest at flight’s end or even divert to land. But, the Captains make judgments …

C'mon, everybody's got a cellphone with a speaker - you can drown the asshole out. Play some good satanic rock as loud as they'll let it play. Every person in every seat. Or maybe the Benny Hill theme? Or Circus B or some other good particularly humiliating song...

Yes, but also the last, you should pardon the expression, goddamn thing I want is for anyone to create circumstances that take that case to *this* Supreme Court.

I'll be flying United next week, and I just looked up their carriage contract. Along with lewd and violent behavior, passenger conduct that is "harrassing; disruptive; disorderly; or offensive" is prohibited. I will definitely be complaining if someone starts "preaching" at me.

It's horrible in every way, but the reality is the vast majority of ppl on a plane have earbuds/headphones, & many are noise cancelling. So she's preaching to the deaf, essentially, which is pretty funny. I would however be pressing the attendant call button every few minutes until they shut her up.

On the London Underground once there was a guy in the standing area reading aloud (very!) from a bible, so I thought, ok, and started reading from my book. Others caught on and ditto. In no time the carriage was a regular Tower of Babel, and the first culprit slunk off at the next stop, defeated.

Reminds me of once on a city bus in Seattle, young guy was holding forth abt how great God's love was. Annoying at 1st but then weirdly inspiring. Young Black guy. White woman shouted out a Bible citation for him as she got off. Turned into a communal good vibe. (Plane preacher still not OK, tho.) 🙂

Of course it never happened (apart from the first chap, with the bible). We are talking about the LONDON Underground, after all! But it remains a favourite revenge fantasy of mine.

Hey, just letting you know this alt text isn't helpful. The point of alt text is to provide the same information to Blind people that sighted people have access to. It's like if you were listening to a podcast and the speaker described a bible verse as "basically, keep that at home" without any

Me alerting the authorities: Hello. I am on flight #666. There is a religious fanatic on this flight who is yelling and screaming about the afterlife awaiting us and shouting "God is great!" Please scramble the fighters.

If only they cared about being more Jesus-like. We’d have Medicare for all, abolish ICE and Trump would have been kicked to the curb a long time ago.

This verse is about prayer which is something you do to connect to God This lady, and most Christians, would argue this is evangelising which is not really the same thing as prayer Still sucks, but I don't think this verse really supports your argument

Airlines used to give out free headphones to use with the in-flight entertainment. Bringing those back, but upgraded to noise-cancelling, would be a genius move. Alas, this is the same industry that keeps shaving off inches of leg room to save money, so that probably ain't happening anytime soon.

A friend from rural Texas told me in her small town there were no grocery stores, no bars, no community center but 4 churches. Much of the US is completely consumed by the bubble of religion.

How is this different from busking? Which I have never seen attempted on a plane but I can imagine how it would turn out. It's worse of course, because unwanted music will only annoy whereas imposing your beliefs in a pluralistic environment is incredibly offensive. I would complain to the airline.

It's different because if you pass a busker you can keep on walking and you're not subjected to more than a few seconds of them. On a plane you're a captive audience. You can only escape by using the emergency exit or "strongly encouraging" the holy-roller to use it.

Reminds me of the weirdos who would start preaching at people in TF2 games. That kind of obnoxious voicechat spamming could get a player's account suspended - and that was in an setting where other players could mute the offending player. Seems like airlines should take a cue from Valve.

An airline flight is not a public space, so the cabin crew might be expected to stop her. I would want them to, were I on the flight. I notice she is being filmed, so I presume she wants that, so that she can then use the altercation for aura farming.

I'd simply ask her "Has this ever worked? Has one person in your captive audiences realized the sins of their ways and decided to dedicate their life to Christ?". No? Then sit down and be quiet...
