If anyone wants to review Echoes of Chaos, it's on Netgalley! If we're mutuals, DM me so I know who to approve ❤️ Otherwise, I'm fussy and will only approve people who: a) have links to places where they review b) have reviews for epic fantasy Happy reading! (even if you're not reading this) 💙📚🪐

Just found a very annoying but fundamentally unimportant formatting issue on my Kobo ebook (a graphic element at the start of each chapter is out of alignment). 2 and a half months in. How did I miss this. Of course I can’t fix it until Monday either!

Turns out a specific preset on Vellum did not work well with Kobo files for some reasons. Now Kobo has its own unique visual style! you better get both, folks :)

As I start to pack up to leave after #Fantasycon, a modest book haul to go into the spare suitcase brought for this reason... There were also some free books in my welcome bag that I've misplaced but which will turn up as I continue...

I forgot to take pictures at #FantasyCon despite doing three panels and a reading. Please do picture me having a great time :) Shout out to all the great people I connected with, and all that bought my book! special thanks to the gent that came up to me after my reading and just said "SOLD!"

Do you see that little sliver of colour on the fifth star? that's Goodreads new feature, something I am pretty happy about. Every little helps. #BookSky #Goodreads

Kobo rankings for New Zealand, who would have known that my first number 1 would be there, and for Science Fiction? (my book is not science fiction, but I'll take it) #BookSky

A local used books store closed very suddenly and essentially left their inventory in a skip outside. This is what I managed to rescue today, but so much was pretty much inaccessible :( may go back tomorrow to see if others dug some layers out

Finally got Nebula because I wanted to watch the romantasy essay by @lindsayellis.bsky.social and the final question: “if not discovery by trope, then what” hits pretty hard as an indie author that is in fact trying to be discovered and does not intentionally use tropes. Wish I had an answer.

Ultimately I think the trope approach is valid if someone wants to prioritise finding an audience early, but to me it always seemed like a deal with the devil (and not one that guarantees success either).

There is no “right” way to become an author, but I wish to believe that it is possible to prioritise your creative intent and still eventually find an audience. Smaller? In a much longer timeframe? Possibly never profitably? Sure, sure, sure. But you get satisfaction from your art along the way.

This here is the most important thing about dog training: understand your dog’s emotional state and learn how to regulate it. This means learning to “read” your dog, and communicate to the extent that it is possible. Also build up their confidence so they can learn how to self regulate a bit.

Courtney Milan@courtneymilan.com

(4) Not enough people understand that dog training is not simply making sure your dog understands commands like sit and stay; it’s about teaching the dog emotional regulation. Your dog is doing this shit because your dog is using destruction as a way to regulate their emotions.

Teaching your dogs “tricks” is useful, especially if they like being trained and it becomes a bonding moment. The idea that your goal is to have a dog that performs on command and that’s how you get them to “behave” is, imho, absurd and leads to accidents down the road.

I will be at #FantasyCon again this year, and this time I am moderating two panels, participating in another and doing a reading! Signed copies of my book will be available at the BFS table too, while stock lasts! A small thing I am excited about, however, is a short story I submitted for...

... the story competition. Either I win, or I get to share it with you all even sooner! Either way it's a win, and I really do like that story. It's what the kids these days call Science Fantasy, and part of what one day may be a collection of stories set in a floating city at the edge of space.

I started working on the second one, but that one is begging to be turned into a novella so we'll see. I do want to start on my second novel soon too, so I may have to put short fiction to the side for a while. Exciting times!

Talk about your book to people, they won't know your book exists if you don't tell them. Today I was chatting with a friend of my wife I see walking my dog multiple times a week, and she asked me if she could read my book. Turns out, she didn't know I released it two months ago #BookSky #IndieAuthor

I would like to raise a bug report with Amazon, the feature where you refresh your kdp report page and a new sale shows up only seems to work occasionally. #BookSky #Authorsky #indie

Thanks so much for giving Indies a chance! The Shape of Magic is a standalone fantasy story set in a magical school for alchemy, sorcery and witchcraft. Found family, interesting magic, and dangerous conspiracies. Plus cozy moments and heartwarming friendships www.goodreads.com/book/show/25...

I will be moderating two panels and do a reading from The Shape of Magic (not sure which part yet, I have to time myself). Excited! Also, signed physical copies will be available for purchase there :) #authorsky

I am convinced 90% of Mr Beast's book preorders were people that bought it to talk about it on social media. I understand, we all hate that it's a thing that happened. Best thing you can do is ignore it. Don't talk about it, don't mention it, just move on and let it vanish into oblivion. #BookSky

My first review in Spanish from Netgalley! My best translation is: "I have to say that it surprised me. I was expecting something similar to Harry Potter, but it is nothing like it. This is adult academia with a deep plot. " (they read the book in English, no translations yet unfortunately) #BookSky
