I am a full-stack #quantum computer engineer, from quantum dots and silicon germanium heterostructures to quantum compilers and ISAs. I am a multi-time published #science author, an amateur #SciFi author and long-time #maker. Check out my bio links for all my works!

R. F. Kuang has supplanted Sanderson as my favourite author. Her characters are so real. Her academic world is so genuine (besides the magic). But even the magic feels real because it captures the sense of wonder. We researchers really feel like "intrepid travelers through abstract lands" sometimes.

The way everything is so meaningful to Alice and Peter. It's just what it feels like to be a grad student. And their struggles. No fictional characters have ever been so relatable to me! Katabasis is my favourite book. Full stop.

Definitely when I write on work days, this means getting out of bed early and getting back to writing in the evening. Sometimes it means writing when I don't feel like it. But once I get into it I love it. The weekends are nicer. Spent a few solid chunks of time today.

This sounds really awesome 😎

It's FOSS@itsfoss.bsky.social

There is a new Open Source Unity-Style Game Engine ... but for ESP32 devices. Deki Engine is an Apache 2.0 modular C++ 2D game engine with a visual editor for ESP32-S3 embedded devices, hitting 60 FPS on hardware. Available for Linux.

This might be an important attack vector to be aware of

an AGENTS.md sitting in ~/Downloads got a coding agent to try installing a rogue npm package per the researchers, the one folder the web can write to on its own https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/ai-coding-agents-hijacked-using-agentsmd-file-in-downloads-folder/

Some great recommendations here! Should I set up a bookstore too? I wonder πŸ€”

I have added a couple of lists of some of my favorite books (all science fiction) -- I highly recommend everything listed! bookshop.org/shop/astroka...

This is awesome! βš›οΈ Quantum computing education is becoming more accessible. It started with IBM Q for remote execution and SpinQ for affordable demo hardware. Let's keep the momentum!

New Scientist@newscientist.com

Starting in January, students attending Skyview High School in Virginia will learn about the building blocks and principles underlying quantum computers by working with one directly

Our Universe's instability is a great concern underlying the #physics of our existence. However, a new mathematical model of our Universe's expansion shows that surrounding fields can limit the possibility of quantum effects in #quantum fields βš›οΈ: https://ow.ly/80aM5100F3W #QuantumPhysics

This is a really great opportunity. The quantum computing community in the area is vibrant and full of great people. You have DWave, Photonic, SFU, UBC & UVic all within a reasonable drive (or ferry). This is also a great group to work with. I worked with Dr. Higginbottom at Photonic for a time!

We're hiring two full-time technical research scientists to support establishing Vancouver's metropolitan quantum network. If you have experience in quantum key or entanglement distribution then we want you to come work with us in beautiful Vancouver! tre.tbe.taleo.net/tre01/ats/ca...

A great place, as I learned from my short term as a visiting graduate student. Check this out if you're looking for teaching opportunities.

SFU Physics@sfuphysics.bsky.social

We are hiring! The Department of Physics at Simon Fraser University is inviting applications for two full-time continuing teaching faculty appointments at the Lecturer level. Application review will begin Dec. 1, 2026. @sfuscience.bsky.social www.sfu.ca/physics/abou...

This is absolutely true, but also I actually HAVE used algebra, physics, and chemistry in my adult life--not writing related! Now, granted, not terribly advanced algebra or chemistry or physics. But I have absolutely used them, consciously.

This is ragebait so not directly quoting it, but the question misses the point: studying those topics trains you to THINK, which ia something EVERYONE needs to know regardless if you use those specific skills.

A very thought provoking thread. I agree that if we aren't doing the work and at the center of the story of our #science there isn't a point in it being done. Writing is a tool to hone thinking. Thinking, our own or Claude's, is not a tool to hone writing. That latter is backwards and wrong.

This is actually my favourite thing. Finding a new space feels like giving your mind breathing room, it stretches to fill the space. It unlocks the unexplored regions of your mind, and I love it. #Coffee + #writing addiction going strong. β˜•πŸ“–

Heya #LateNightWrite πŸ‘‹ I am Marcus, a PhD student and writer of science fiction as well as science (the real kind). My WIPs include the sequel to my debut sci-fi novel, The Mercury Relay, and a few new non-fiction books on productivity, computing and how the universe is math! #AmWriting #BookSky
