Of all the possible scenarios in Serbia's elections, I don't think Vucic conceding before the results were announced was on the cards. Nevertheless, here we are. Vucic has conceded; the Student List are set for victory. "I wish them success", Vucic says. Cheers on the streets.

It’s official: Serbia joins Poland and Hungary in voting out an authoritarian leader. Vučić has conceded defeat. According to preliminary results, the student list wins an absolute majority with 52.3% of the vote, while SNS trails at 39% (source: CeSID). STUDENTI POBEĐUJU!

By 4 PM, turnout in Serbia's snap parliamentary elections reached 56.4%, compared to 42.1% in 2023. Irregularities were recorded at polling stations: pressure on voters, polling board members and observers (29%), procedural failures (18%) and voting integrity issues (17%). #Elections2026

By 1 PM, 41.1 percent of eligible voters had voted in the parliamentary elections (margin of error +/- 0.9%). For comparison, turnout in the December 2023 parliamentary elections by 1 PM was 26.6 percent. #Elections2026

Now the movement has become an electoral list polling above 40%, bringing together supporters from the left and right around a shared goal: change, and an end to corruption and impunity. Whether this is enough to oust the autocratizing government in an unevel playing field remains to be seen.

Voter turnout by 1pm was 41.1% according to @crta.bsky.social, almost 15% higher than at the same time in 2023. Observers and NGOs had reported over 120 irregularities by 11am, but the national broadcaster (RTS) made no mention of them in its election coverage. 😐 #iykyk

2. It helps to have a group seen as benevolent (& capable), untainted by politics as usual. The students organised through plenums, voting on decisions, and stayed leaderless, insisting early on that their struggle wasn’t about conventional politics.

3. It helps to use various forms of peaceful tactics that signal effort, peaceful resistance & belief in the cause. In 2025 ~80 students cycled 1,300+ km from Novi Sad to Strasbourg to seek EU support. Ten days later, 21 students ran to Brussels to press EU leaders to act.

1. It helps to have a clear injustice people broadly agree was wrong: something for already frustrated citizens to rally around. The student protests took off after 16 people died in the Novi Sad station canopy collapse in Nov 2024, with students demanding accountability & an end to corruption.

The fact that almost 8/10 republicans are still comfortable with Trump’s completely bonkers far right agenda is bizarre. You’d think at least a few more of the often referred to as “good old” Republicans would have drawn the line somewhere by now 🫪

I am truly a child of the 20th century. So it still seems peculiar to me that supposedly centre-left Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen today felt the urge to release a joint message on social media with Italian PM Giorgia Meloni calling for stricter controls on immigration in Europe.

Those who follow Serbian politics know this could be one of Vučić’s many political maneuvers: calling snap elections he believes he can win, then returning as prime minister after stepping down as president, à la Putin. This is, I believe, anything but an acceptance that his time is up... 1/2

Serbian President Vucic announced he’ll resign after 18 months of student protests. That’s Bangladesh, Nepal, Madagascar, Bulgaria, Hungary, and now Serbia, all in the past two years. Anti-corruption is the most potent force for positive political change right now. The US remains ripe.

Also, the anti-corruption message has largely been the banner under which the opposition has mobilized for the much broader goal of restoring democracy and overhauling the political system. 2/2

Soo, since yesterday I am officially PhDone! 😮🎓✨🥂 I’m incredibly grateful to my supervisors Sylvia Kritzinger & @markuswagner.bsky.social for their guidance & support in this journey, and to my wonderful committee @gessler.bsky.social & @chrisclaassen.bsky.social for the thoughtful discussion. 1/2

Luckily, I already landed my dream first post-defense job 🥹✨ But I’m always open to talk invites, collabs, or just brainstorming ideas and projects 🙈 😉 Thanks Ben! 🥹

I’m also beyond happy that I get to stay at this wonderful department as a Senior Scientist within the new Democracy and Human Rights Research Network @stawi-univie.bsky.social 🥹✨ Looking forward to continuing to work on questions of democratic resilience in an increasingly backsliding world❗️ 2/2

Tisza pulling off a win is a big deal, not just domestically, but as a potential playbook for reversing democratic backsliding in the region. Orbán conceding and congratulating them is just as monumental (feels strange to say, but here we are). www.bbc.com/news/live/c2...

I’d especially like to encourage women to apply. We’re a fantastic department with excellent scholars, in beautiful Vienna. Data shows that women are less likely to apply for positions than equally qualified men (Muriel Niederle & Lise Vesterlund 2011), so if you’re considering it, please go for it!
