This is only related in a sideways manner, but: the story of any small slice of humanity is the story of humanity, just boiled down and distilled. So: In 2020, we had a lot of conversations about harassment at SF/F conventions, and Isaac Asimov came up several times.

What NZ activist group can I join that is like the absolute opposite of Destiny Church? There must be some way to balance out their passionate intensity.

I work in the tech industry, specifically human-AI interaction. The personal data they collect from you is worth more than your out-of-pocket expense for that "smart" mattress, home assistant, security camera, dishwasher, etc.

Quick question. Why does literally everything require you to have an account. Everything.

I have been told if you have nothing nice to say it is better for you to say nothing at all, and so all I shall say is that in these dark times we must take care of each other. (though I recognize that those making these times dark will not think this is a nice thing to say).

Personally I hope we find out that what Gollum was doing while wandering about looking for the ring was either solving a series of cozy murders (Precious We Wrotes) or performing in an incompetent hobbit amateur dramatic troupe (The Ring that Goes Wrong)

Their aesthetics help to reinforce a system of gender where everyone fits in a pink box or a blue box, where the highest status people in the pink box are the pinkest and the highest status people in the blue box are the bluest, and where the whole pink box is lower status than the blue.

Peaceful protests are not a threat to our country. They don’t need to be “quelled.” They’re what free people do in a healthy society. They should be welcomed.

Here I am in NZ, just hoping for an influx of very clever, very weird, very fun people who tragically no longer feel welcome or safe in the US. We aren’t perfect, but we would love to add your distinctiveness to our own.

Due to the English language’s inadequacy and imprecision regarding sex and gender descriptors, I’d like to propose the following. Born with gonads on outside “BWGOO” for those previously described as male or AMAB. Born with gonads on inside “BWGOI” for those previously described as female or AFAB.

Then trans individuals shall be described as GOO-girls or GOI-boys. I mean, seriously folks, arguing from a dictionary about people’s right to dress, act, love, and live is just silly when you think about it for more than a minute.

Judge Reyes is asking if the DoD cited a Beyonce album in their anti-trans policy, would the attorney demand she ignore common sense and just listen to the album. DoJ attorney has no idea how to respond.

The new US leaders seem to have failed to realise “run the government as a business” really means “run the country as a business”. A business must train its employees to to their job. A country needs to educate everyone, often for roles that aren’t paid and jobs that don’t exist yet.

Possible fundraiser opportunity / opportunity for some good natured hilarity. My Captain's Hat is dying. I have a lot of field work coming up. I will wear (almost) any hat, provided you: A) Send me the hat B) Donate to an ocean conservation charity. Interested? Let's chat. DMs open.

Conservatives prefer the past. Progressives have hope the future. The political contest used to be over the majority in the centre, who were broadly okay with how things are right now. That centre has diminished, because folks are sad or angry about the now, whether or not it’s actually terrible.

Hey Canada, here’s an idea. Agree to join the USA under two conditions: 13 states, not one; and require that a formal method to leave the Union is added to the Constitution before you join. Then withdraw at the last minute (blame Quebec) and watch California and Texas secede.

Those last scenes of C3 E118 felt like they were deciding the fate of Campaign 4 Exandria in real time. Obviously the deities, but maybe also the system? The fungal species on Ruidus have a Daggerheart vibe.

Imagine: gun owners pay a tax for treating gunshot wounds; car owners pay a tax for treating injuries from traffic accidents; smokers pay for respiratory illnesses for everyone around them; schools pay for mental illnesses of kids who don’t learn the way the curriculum teaches.

Hahahahah I love this! That $20 or $30 copay will go up to 2 or 300 dollars per visit. Absolutely genius of these tech bros. Just pure genius

At the recent international conference on influenza (OPTIONS) they specifically said we are limited in our ability to control infectious diseases because we need more social science. It's no good having tip top tech eg mRNA vaccines if people don't use them

NZ is out of step from our peer countries in not having Capital Gains or Inheritance Taxes. Both target the asset-wealthy and should be a good match for traditional labour values. But getting out the youth vote is vital, as they are the ones who should benefit. www.rnz.co.nz/news/politic...

Subtitles aren’t just for deaf or hard of hearing players. They’re important for players in loud environments (who can’t use headphones), non-native speakers who rely on text to follow dialogue, and many neurodivergent folks who struggle to focus or process audio quickly. Just to mention few.

We all think plastic pollution is a problem, and it is. In the nearly 70 years between 1950 and 2019, the world produced a total of ~9.5 billion tonnes of plastic. But all the plastic we have EVER produced weighs as much as CO₂ we emitted into the atmosphere during the first three months of 2024!

Some people think the world should neatly divide into the little boxes they learned in childhood. Dude: the universe just isn’t that simple, and it will not bend to your will.

Given the chance, I’d spend the next 5 years researching the role of Tricksters across history and what they say about the society they emerge from. As an agent of change, they are reviled by autocrats and admired by the oppressed.

Whether it’s Loki, Maui, Anansi, The Cat in the Hat, or Ferris Bueller, they break rules and puncture egos. But it’s whether the society deifies or demonises the Trickster that really interests me. Do monotheistic societies get held back by a lack of innovation inspired by Trickster tales?
