I write books and post too many cat pictures. She/her, only.

Kelpie is not Alice, and she's not a replacement for Alice. Nothing ever will be. I will be crying for my girl until I follow her into the clearing at the end of the path. But Kelpie...Kelpie helps. And without Kathleen, I would never have found her.

Kelpie joined my household eight days before the fifth anniversary of Alice's death, and the way it happened was so perfect a chain of coincidences that I really do feel like Alice went "You have been too sad for too long, let me send you the most complicated chaos beast available."

Kelpie and Alice are distant, distant cousins. Kelpie and Baxter are more closely related. I don't think most people understand how close losing Alice came to killing me. You can grieve yourself into heart failure, and I definitely tried.

Looking up Kathleen's breeders, I found, on the page of the breeder in my state, a picture of Alice's grandmother, Gracie. I emailed them IMMEDIATELY, explaining who I was and what I was looking for. Now, they're a small breeder. Like most reputable breeders, they do two/three litters a year.

They have a long waitlist. But I emailed, and they replied same day: "We always wondered why you never reached out to us." A week later, they emailed about a kitten whose adoption had fallen through, and showed me Kelpie. Four days after that, I brought her home.

(*This isn't be being a dick. This is me going "I will judge your cats differently if I'm judging them as Maine Coons or fluffy rescues. Let me find out which is true before it's weird to ask.")

Kathleen named two breeders, and I looked them both up. One of them is a fair distance from me. The other... When Alice died, I went looking for other breeders who were working with the bloodline that produced her. I only found two, both thousands of miles away.

Being Kathleen, and Canadian, and other such complimentary things, she naturally told it in the least self-aggrandizing way possible, and I will correct that now. So: Kelpie and Baxter Are Related, or, Kathleen Accidentally Saves Seanan's Life: An Accounting.

Kathleen and I are on the same Discord, and as we were introducing ourselves, she mentioned that she had two Maine Coon cats. As I always do, I promptly asked who her breeder was.*

On the same week the DCCC released its first anti-transgender ad, popular Democratic politician Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez did not mince words. When asked about anti-trans Democrats, she called them "shameful," "wrong," and decried them for "scaring so easily." Subscribe to support our journalism.

Weird request. So, I was scrolling on eBay and my eye caught on an item lot of 27 vintage rings. In particular, I focused on a blurred ring in the background. The ring pictured below. Sometimes, as an author, you need to know the story. I kind of thought the year read 1976, the year I was born.

This is ragebait so not directly quoting it, but the question misses the point: studying those topics trains you to THINK, which ia something EVERYONE needs to know regardless if you use those specific skills.

Goddamn did I need to hear someone with actual influence and power say this right now

Trans voter to @aoc.bsky.social: Trans people in America feel like they've been abandoned by the Democratic Party, that we are a losing issue, that it's not worth defending us. What do you say to that? AOC:

I am having one of those moments where my understanding of language doesn't align with someone trying to be mean to me. I don't know what writing a "self-congratulatory" book would even LOOK like. Self-indulgent, I can get, but what does self-congratulatory even mean? Any ideas?

I love my cats. But Maine Coons are massive and SMART, and sometimes they make me wonder why I don't just have ball pythons. Very sweet, ball pythons. Almost never piss on the couch to make a point.

This morning, I got up and got out of bed, and Kelpie hopped onto the bed, walked over to the edge, and started chittering at the remote. I turned the heat on DAMN FAST, before she could start experimenting with buttons.

I have to open the front and change whether I want heat or cold, but once it's set, I can turn the unit on or off with a single button. I don't run the heat while I'm sleeping--I make my own cozy, I'm good with just my own natural furnace.

And when I wake up, I tend to turn the heat on, get the bedroom up to "comfortable," and attract every cat in the house. ...the Maine Coons have been watching this process. Closely.

Example of what smart means: I had the house's central air upgraded earlier this year. I now have A/C and heat, both controlled by the same remote. The remote lives in a cradle next to my bed.

For reasons I've never been able to understand--her manners are otherwise impeccable--Kelpie has always expressed her displeasure with peeing on things. When she was a baby she peed on me if I didn't get out of bed fast enough for her liking.

And this is why I got out of bed, stripped the couch, and stacked cardboard boxes all over it to keep her from repeating the pissing trick while it was unprotected as I washed the cover. Laundry's going now.

(*Kelpie has nothing specific to be annoyed about right now, save the ongoing presence of Mom's cats, but she's an opportunistic little thing, and might see the uncovered couch as a challenge.)

At some point during the Litterpocalypse last week, she apparently expressed her displeasure by peeing on the couch. This is why I have waterproof pet-protector covers on the couch, so yay. But I JUST discovered the urine issue. Boo.

I was sexually abused as a child. I'm not the only person I know who can say that. If I'd been forced to let ANYONE perform that sort of examination in order to play sports, a thing children need for health--both physical and mental? I am not unique. Vote no on unnecessarily traumatizing our kids.

Doctors and nurses are voicing their objections. I-638 would require EVERY girl who wants to participate in sports to go through biological sex verification. That means expensive, invasive, and utterly gross examinations. Protect our kids and let them play. Vote NO on I-638

Mom is being evicted from skilled nursing. She still can't get in and out of a car or go up and down stairs. Her living space is down a flight of stairs. There are no accessible bathrooms in this house (the contractor is coming Friday to rebuild hers). I...everything about this is bad.

(And of course, this is all complicated by my needing to dodge assuming any degree of legal responsibility for/authority over her, because then they start billing my self-employed author ass for her care.)
