Can't believe it — my first‑author paper is out and my image graces the cover of @dev-journal.bsky.social 🎉
Here, we reveal how early developmental programs shape and maintain #zebrafish gill architecture throughout life

Development is trusted.
Our journal has a strong reputation for publishing high-quality, robust science that is widely accepted. Development papers stand the test of time.
This means you can be proud of your Development paper.

My first paper is officially out in @currentbiology.bsky.social ! We found that snake embryos coil due to a mismatch in growth rates between the gut and spine. This tight coil is one of the reasons why snakes are able to get so long. Read the paper here!
A developmental biologist's guide to mechanics, just out in Development! In which we learn about the three pillars of any mechanical model: forces, mechanical properties, and boundary conditions.

Very proud to announce that the Bischoff Lab has its first PhD student! 🎉
Juliette ( @juliettea.bsky.social ) already started with us in May, but she only recently joined Bluesky 😊

We’ve just published our latest #preprint list. This week we focus on research using microscopy to answer questions in biology. Let us know if you have any recommendations for us to add to the list.

Happy #FluorescenceFriday! ✨🔬
A peek inside a developing quail embryo, where the brain and heart are already taking shape.
A tiny embryo doing some seriously impressive developmental heavy lifting. 💪❤️

🤩 It's time for some invertebrate eye candy! 🤩 Here's a ctenophore (or comb jelly) stained with phalloidin by John Alexander Salazar Hernandez & imaged on an exaSPIM built by Kaelin Wulf of the team of @adamkglaser.bsky.social as part of the FHL Functional Biodiversity course #microscopy
Happy #FluorescenceFriday !
I have cuticula-shedding office company at the moment, so I took the opportunity to take some cool autofluorescent images of Flossis cuticula! (Plus an image of Flossi herself!)
We now have 4,426 trees for published articles and 12,662 trees for peer reviews in The Forest of Biologists. Thank you to everyone who has contributed.
Excited to share a new preprint from the lab, by @andrewmatheson.bsky.social and team, where we dive into the superpower of newts: plasticity! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6... Like many good projects, this started with a serendipitous observation... 🧵1/5

I am excited to open my lab at @ibioillinois.bsky.social in Spring 2027! We will use zebrafish & other fishy friends to reveal the genetic basis of large scale changes in the vertebrate body plan, and how this impacts both human health and evolution. Join me at UIUC! 🧬🧫🔬

A blaze of neural crest cells migrates through a developing quail embryo on one of embryonic development's most epic journeys.
Beautifully captured by @vanderspuy.bsky.social 👩🔬🐣 #Devbio
This collection explores emergent phenomena in #CellBiology incl. how cellular events are rapidly coordinated by waves of chemical & electrical signals, how tissue patterning is governed at the cellular level & how cellular interfaces guide cellular migration & morphology rupress.org/jcb/collecti...

We're very excited to announce the official launch of the Journal of Regeneration. Together with the amazing team from @pensoft.net and my two co-EICs Loriano Ballarin and Buki Rinkevich, it is such a pleasure to share this new platform for bringing together the regeneration biology community.
New research finds that the ovaries of old mice become infiltrated with immune cells and may secrete immune signals into the body.
The consequences of these changes aren’t clear, but a similar transformation in humans could have health implications after menopause. https://scim.ag/4oJAGOK

How does one cell become an entire animal? We can now film it in 3D 🐟, but turning those movies into accurate cell tracks is brutally hard. Enter our new #Kaggle challenge: $60K prize pool, to help crack 3D+time cell tracking at scale! 🧵👇

8 hours. That’s all fish need to heal wounds 🐟⏱️ Why are they so fast compared to humans? I break down the science of rapid regeneration in a microscopy story 🔬 Watch here: youtu.be/Mt9f61adaP0#FluorescenceFriday#Microscopy
Excited to share the final published version of our work on the evolution of dorsal-ventral patterning in fins and limbs, now up on @currentbiology.bsky.social
In review we added new single LARM element deletions to assess their impact on dorsality. Take a look! 🔬🧪🐟🐁

We take for granted that our hands have two sides and can articulate in an endless number of ways. But what about a fish’s fin? Can a fish know something “like the back of its fin,” or have its future told with a fin palm reading? Check out this bluetorial to find out 👇🧪🧬🐟 doi.org/10.1101/2025...
Read about how research into lymphatic function is changing our understanding of immune regulation in the lungs in our review: doi.org/10.1016/j.co...
Congratulations to co-authors Amy Rivers and Camila Migues Ramirez!
The array of organs in the animal body differ dramatically in their architecture, but cell-cell adhesion mediated by cadherins is a common principle. Our lab usually focuses on epithelia but cadherins are also active in migrating mesenchymal cells like these migrating testis myoblasts 1/n 🧪
As Editor of @dev-journal.bsky.social I get asked "What are you doing about your impact factor?"
In our new editorial we say: Ask not what Dev can do for the impact factor. Ask what you can do for Dev's IF
The IF is about how we all cite, review & assess each other's work
doi.org/10.1242/dev....
New in @science.org ...since our first discoveries of early tetrapods, they have been thought of as "amphibians" characterized by aquatic larvae. But is this true? For the first time, we report exceptional fossils of stem tetrapod babies that upend this paradigm. 1/n

Very excited to be sharing our new paper, just out in Nature Cell Biology!
The big question we investigate: How do migrating cells put their front 🔴 and back 🔵 in the right place?
