My time at Unity is coming to a premature end, with our consulting team being dismantled. That means that ✨Sparkling Code✨ is available again for all your C++, performance, graphics and gamedev needs, now with premium Unity expertise too!

My graphics experiment is finally hitting sub 7ms frame time with shadowmaps on my test scene. As an experiment I reproducing it in Unity (forward+ URP) and comparing nsight/renderdoc captures. So far looks like I'm 1.5x faster with approximately equal levels of fidelity.

Technically Unity has a sampled environnement map while my shader fakes it with arithmetic, so they do pay one extra sample for lighting, so not perfectly 1:1 yet.

(This is part of my experiments with LLM tooling for my upcoming talk. So far I do find some value in a 20 bucks subscription to assist bootstrapping and automation. And a bit of research when I hit the limits of my graphics knowledge)

You don't need to read the classics to figure out which class you belong to in 2026. Just check whether or not AI is allowed to distill/clone your work without recourse, or if it will get immediately patched and block you from trying again. You'll see in which of the two you are.

I asked Gemini for song recommendation based on one I liked and I got suggested a mix of tracks that don't exist and ones that put me to sleep. (And to be clear my original reference wasn't from No Angel by Dido)

Or they could respond basically the same way every society ever has responded to strategic bombing, which is a hardening of resolve to resist. acoup.blog/2022/10/21/c... It is difficult to imagine what news might be more warmly greeted in Kyiv than news that Putin had bombed Paris or Berlin.

acoup.blogCollections: Strategic Airpower 101This week, I’m going to offer a fairly basic overview of the concept of strategic airpower, akin to our discussions of protracted war and nuclear deterrence. While the immediate impetus for t…

Last I'll post about this, but Elon Musk disagrees with me. This means I am onto something, and I feel more valid in my opinion than ever.

I think a big reason there's a large gap in gamedev reaction to AI is because so far it mostly penalizes small/indie studios. Big ones rely on copyrighted IP and an army of lawyers. Small ones rely on finding a high concept. You can vibe clone one much more easily than the other.

Ha yes let's go after a solo programmer who's been doing open source dev for over a decade because he put an AI usage notice. Very mature. You're mad at AI? Fine. I don't like it either. But then go protest the big corporations and politicians lobbying for it, not individual programmers.

downloaded a track pack for Clone Hero and I was not expecting to find this banger in there

In the AI future they envision no one has a job but everyone has spare money to buy the 10x more product/content they say they'll be able to make. I can't take those people seriously.

"But Mathieu everyone will just be making their own 10x amount of products with AI as a small business that the market can totally absorb". Yeah, right.

AI is really good at exposing how much business/management types despise creative people (and workers in general) and would really love to do away with all of them in exchange for some automated slop pipeline.

NEW: Epic Games has delayed its upcoming (not yet announced) Star Wars + Marvel shooter as it pivots to complete AI game development. "No more hand-written code," a director told staff. All art "generated with full AI workflows." Full scoop: www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

It's not like they ever loved artists and creatives, but until now they had to deal with them to get an actual product done. Of course this all rests on the assumption that people want expedited and extremely formatted products with as little human touch as possible.

People who say "in schools they're teaching useless math we'll never use" should try doing graphics 20 years later. Instantly humbled by a tan function you hadn't seen in decades.

Petition to make customer service asking you to call them after you ask them to do something by text/email a hate crime against millennials. This is boomer agism levied against the younger gens. Phone aren't made for calling people. We collectively decided this 20 years ago.

When you're casually working with your pet project and vckpg decides it's time to rebuild SDL, glslang and the vulkan SDK because MSVC got an update 😩😩

There's a part of the french population online that seems ok with the idea of throwing grenades at 15 yo kids. It may seem insane but when you remember they probably also support Israel so it's actually a pretty consistent position on the usage of military hardware on children.

I am working on a very important musical theory that most/all emo and alternative from the 2000s is downstream of Tonight Tonight by the Smashing Pumpkins but I'm not sure people are ready to hear me out. But deep down I know I'm right.

In Paris you can get a train ticket for 2€ that will take you pretty far (but slowly). Or you can try to buy a ticket for the regional train that leaves in 10 minutes but no one at the station will know how to sell you a ticket and you'll just watch it leave. Also is costs 24€.

Did my talk at #ndctechtown about doing learning graphics with C++. I'm really thankful for Nolan introducing the average person to Bronze Age Collapse so my joke could reach a much wider audience.

That finding is particularly interesting. I've found that RAM is usually the bottleneck for parallel compilation these days (and the price isn't looking like it's gonna go down).
