My backlog is growing to absurd levels. But on any given night, 9/10 times I choose to work on my own game rather than play something. #gamedev vs #gaming

This news comes as I’m working on integrating fmod into Siren - hopefully licensing/pricing changes aren’t coming. #gamedev

Big news for game audio! IASIG sponsor FMOD has been acquired by Bose, bringing one of the industry's most widely used interactive audio platforms into a company with a long history of audio innovation. This is exciting news for game audio professionals. Read more: buff.ly/6M5sjhm #Fmod #IASIG

I decided early on that Siren wouldn't have a typical editor. I'm currently editing a map in LDtk and seeing the changes hot-reload in my running game instantly. I could just as easily use a different editor, like Tiled. Bring your own tools and define your own workflow. #gamedev #gameengine #rust

This is the way.

i'd like to point out to the "build games not engines" crowd that it took only 19 business days to build a custom scripting language, parser with good error reporting, compiler, and integrate it into my engine i have spent more time than that evaluating existing "out of the box" solutions before

Just made the switch to Linux. I'm happy to report that Siren built/ran with ZERO code changes necessary! 🦀🐧 #gamedev #rustlang #linux

I've had it with Win 11 and want to switch to Linux. But I haven't used Linux as my primary desktop for almost 20 years. So I'm a little behind on the current distros. I'm currently looking at Zorin, but I wouldn't mind some advice/recommendations. 🐧 #linux #programming #tech

He said it, he's lying, and the media is running with it.

This should be obvious and shouldn't need to be said. But AGI will NOT come from an LLM (if it ever comes at all.) When the day comes when Altman, or whoever, says their LLM has achieved AGI, they will be lying to you. Don't expect the media to fact-check them on it.

So stoked for this - one of my favorite NES games!

Please tell me this is real because it is SO WHOLESOME: The original creators of The Battle of Olympus (1988) are remaking their classic game for their company's 40th anniversary as their "final challenge" together. What a sweet and inspiring story 😭❤️ www.youtube.com/watch?v=W6cL...

Programming is still free. Sources of knowledge are still free. You don't need a subscription to build something cool. #programming #gamedev #noai

Been heads down on Siren development a lot lately. There's still a mountain of work ahead. But I can finally see the light of a v1 release. I've often questioned myself, wondering if I can really program this thing solo. But it's finally really coming together! #gamedev #programming #rustlang

Taking a little break from Siren/gamedev to work on my CMS side project: Upgrading .Net 8 -> 10, updating all nuget packages, and migrating from Angular 17 -> 22. I regret everything.

I've been ride-or-die with @playstation.com since the PS1. I stuck with it during the dark early PS3 days. I've been on PS+ since day 1. I was anticipating the PS6. ... I just unsubbed from PS+. I now have no desire for the PS6. If I'm being forced into a digital-only world, I'll go to PC/Steam.

Do what you want. Ignore trends. Make cool stuff, just because you think it’s cool.

Hey artists, let's share some helpful things in the community :) 🎨 What's one tip or trick you would give a new artist in your chosen medium? (Or just in general!)

Calvin and Hobbes strip that says it quite well;

even if LLM actually made gamedev more efficient, which I see no reason to believe it has or will, that won't reduce crunch, because the business people will just push harder until you're crunching again. When a tool increases worker productivity, that doesn't translate into better work hours.

I feel the need to reiterate this. #programming #coding #gamedev

Maybe your code doesn't need: - Inheritance Hierarchies - SOLID Principles - Endless Dependencies - Design Patterns - FOTM Framework - Containerization - Abstract Interfaces - TDD - Microservices - "Clean" Architecture Maybe your code just needs: - Data - Transforms #programming #coding #gamedev

It looks great, but I hate that FFVII Remake pt 3 is called “Revelation” 🙄 That and “Evolution” are two words that need to be retired from titles.

A negative review my 90% positive game just got What I read: "Yes it's fun, but since this is priced accordingly and I don't want indie devs to be sustainable, I would not recommend this game." Please indie devs, don't fall for this. Set the right price. Don't be part of the race to the bottom.

I see a lot of people here getting burnt out on "game coding" tutorials. They say they feel like they aren't learning anything. Look, gamedev is a very *difficult* subset of software development. Let's talk about it... (a short thread) #gamedev #indiedev #programming

Game coding will involve dealing with: - Graphics APIs - Physics - File management - Net code - Multithreaded systems - Intense performance constraints That's barely scratching the surface - Rendering alone is infinitely vast. Building that foundational knowledge first is vital to your success.

I know everyone wants to jump right into the fun stuff. But remember, it's a marathon. I've been programming almost daily for well over 20 years and still feel like a total noob sometimes. 😅 There's *always* more to learn in programming/gamedev. Take your time. Absorb it. Enjoy your journey. ❤️

You may not want to hear this, but don't start with game coding! First, just learn to program. You can shift your focus to games later. Pick a language and start at the beginning. Understand the syntax. Learn what the computer is actually *doing* with your code.

Once you have a foundation, you can move on to things like data structures, common algorithms, and performance. You may not feel like you're working towards a game, but you are! Gaining deep knowledge will pay off in the long run. Eventually, you'll be ready to move on to game-centric topics.

People are quick to blame Unreal for technical issues (trust me, I get it.) But given the low bar for quality in comparatively simpler software, I can’t help but see something like UE5 as an absolute miracle, despite its issues. People have no idea how complex these things are. #gamedev #unreal

Not that anyone needs yet another reason to steer clear of Microsoft, but VSCode now adds Copilot as a co-author of all your commits, regardless if you used Copilot. This was added silently as a default. This is some next level insanity.
