Aw, damn. What a truly kind man… RIP, Walter. ❤️🖖🏼

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

Here's an ambitious countermove. Buried in that 7,103-word terms of service is this gem: you can opt out of the binding arbitration within 30 days of "agreeing" to it by sending an email to termsofservice@latimes.com with the subject line "MANDATORY ARBITRATION AND CLASS ACTION WAIVER OPT-OUT".

was sat in a quiet pub enjoying hearing a man & woman talking about comics they love -- Wicked + the Divine! Saga! Love & Rockets! -- & then heard them bring up Sandman & the guy said "I'm so glad the sexual assault allegations against him were dropped" which is wildly incorrect

Without facts, truth and trust, we don't have democracy - "we're in the last two minutes of it" - @mariaressa.bsky.social You can't fight for climate, for kids, for equality or rule of law if we cannot agree on the facts. "Information integrity is the mother of all battles."

Just got all my boys together to take on the wandering ronin who came to town. There’s like 15 of us and only one of him so pretty much the only thing that would give me any pause is if he was master of the devastating and lightning-fast iaidō style. But that’s not likely. Coward hasn’t even drawn h

I think just about everyone is subject to the lure of self-boosting rhetoric; certainly I am, & knowing that sort of sours the appeal of "irreducible power of story and human imagination!!"-type arguments for me; but books are fun and sometimes wise and mostly don't try to eat the whole economy

This is where the palace industry of EA-flavored TESCREAL boosterism comes from : convincing rich techies that the most moral and exciting thing to be in the universe is a rich techie.

The "one-shot" claim (that anyone can be convinced of anything by a superior intellect) is classic cult leader bs, you just alienate or un-person anyone you can't persuade of anything you want

The problem is not that a hyper-intelligent system (whatever that means) can convince anyone of anything. It is just pretty trivial to convince most people to believe things they kinda want to believe anyway, and to persuade them that what they're doing is morally correct.

I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement. For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation. I will not be silenced.

I've heard folks from outside the US, esp. non-anglophones, say we're "weird about AI" (as in, *markedly* more anti-AI). If true, I think it boils down to this: a sense that the power structures in our society are not aligned to bring any good to normal folks. It's a big club and you're not in it.

Me since 2012: Everything abt "AI" as currently construed is inextricably woven w/ carcerality, capitalism, white supremacy (w/ racism, ableism, sexism, & LGBTQ+ hate being foundational thereto), hegemony, & kyriarchy, & we must name, examine, & deconstruct those before we can build something better

For a long time now one of the major American identities has been 'consumer'. Sucks to admit but you can't deny. One of the ways you create your identity is by buying stuff & identity signaling. It's not "citizen" but it's *something*.

A shift by the major economic players from "we make stuff, and you're part of us, and also you're the person we're making stuff for" to "we, the ~400 or so of us, are all making bank doing government corruption now so good luck lol", breaks that.

The pivot to "all tech companies are basically defense contractors now" (& the AI "competition with China" positioning) also makes a certain amount of sense coming on the heels of 2 or 3 major rounds of tech firms failing to create products with any real uptake

You can't make people love your ape jpgs or your metaverse, you can't make them mass-adopt your VR headset. But if you convince a corrupt government to buy your stuff, it tends to stay bought. So long as you're paying the right people.

Particularly in the last 2 years we've seen *serious* elite alignment around increasing elite power and control. I'm talking real elites here, not "owns a boat" or "went on vacation somewhere nice," folks with hundreds of millions of dollars as table stakes
