Great commentary in the CBC about BC's historically low voter turnout and the role first-past-the-post plays in that, with commentary from Fair Vote Canada. We need proportional representation so everyone feels they have a voice in our democracy. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

cbc.caB.C. NDP's defeat reflected in low voter turnout: political scientists | CBC NewsPolitical scientists say record-low voter turnout reflected a sharp drop in support for the B.C. NDP, paving the way for the party's humbling defeat by the B.C. Conservatives.

Voters feeling less disenfranchised and showing up more is another strong evidence why we need electoral reform towards proportional representation (which can also be ranked-choice at the same time too)

BC election data shows 52% of voters stayed home. Global data shows all things being equal proportional elections have higher turnout than systems built solely on single-winner-ridings, because proportional representation means everyone feels they have a voice.

With the BC election coming up, I want to highlight @bcgreens.bsky.social’s ultra rich tax on those with $50M+ networth. For references, Canada’s top 1% owns as much as the bottom 80%, and the average return rates on S&P500 is about 10%. Such a policy is a crucial step in the right direction

Toronto deserves a more democratic electoral system that unites rather than divides people. Check out @torontorabit.bsky.social to see which City Councillor candidates have committed to ranked ballots. Don't forget to ask uncommitted candidates in your ward to commit too!

"But while [ranked ballots] might be strictly non-partisan, it is decidedly pro-voter – and almost always produces a more positive, issue-focused campaign ... 96% [of survey respondants] said their ballot was easy to fill out." Glad to see it, NYC! www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

This video is for Doug Ford, and all those in my replies saying bike lanes "stop emergency vehicles from getting to their destination". They *allow* emergency vehicles to get to their destination, as seen here on Adelaide. They were designed with emergency services in mind.

A reminder Mark Carney said this back in 2019 as the Bank of England's governor. Canada continues to be waist-deep in fossil fuels and way behind on climate action since he took office. It’s time we change that and demand real nation building. #EarthDay

For context, the hardest climbs in climbing gyms are usually around V7. This rock climber was climbing grades I cannot dream of in 2025 right up to her 3rd covid infection that developed into long-term disabilities. #LongCovidAwarenessDay

loscharlos @loscharlos.bsky.social

On #LongCovidAwarenessDay — I think the most important thing to understand is that it’s still happening: “I got COVID for a 3rd time in 2025 (I'm vaxed, boosted & took paxlovid)... Boom #LongCovid. Can't climb due to PEM. I haven't climbed in almost a year.” “COVID… is still causing disability.“

It’s International Long Covid Awareness Day. One of the best things you can do to support people with Long Covid is wear a mask (ideally a respirator like an N95). Masks break chains of transmission. They prevent infection. The only way to avoid Long Covid is to avoid Covid!

Now is a good time to advocate for TTC signal priority for not just the LRTs, but also streetcars. Good public transit literally reduces traffic for everyone. Toronto deserves better and can do better.

Reece Martin@rmtransit.bsky.social

Over twice the speed of driving, this isn’t what gets people onto transit. Oh and the bus? 10 minutes faster! At least the media is starting to take note! Politicians too! youtu.be/OsCFS-Mxzyo?...

Damn, rogue aunty handing out red envelopes like it’s the Kinder Surprise of potato chips is certainly not on my bingo card

Want to make something from the past great again? Unions!

Senator Bernie Sanders@sanders.senate.gov

Corporate America has been waging a war against the trade union movement for a simple reason: They know that union workers earn higher wages and better benefits than non-union workers.

Imagine this, but for the entire night sky, in a decade-long TIME-LAPSE! So stoked about the Rubin Observatory going online and having already given us a sneak peek of what's to come with its first images!

How bad will it be? Catastrophic. Proposed cuts to #NSF, #NIH, and #NASA will set the US R&D landscape back 25 yrs+, cause economic and job loss now, and undermine innovations to come. But, this is the WH's *proposed* budget. Speak up now before it is too late. (inflation adjusted $-s below)

We must normalize masks as a public health tool before it’s too late. If you care about social justice, disability rights, fighting fascism or your health… you should be wearing a mask. Ideally an N95 or better. The more of us wearing them, the harder they will be to ban.

It's official: it's a minority government! Canadians are demanding collaboration, not one-party rule. Let’s seize this moment and push for proportional representation—it's time to build a stronger, more united democracy! #cdnpoli

And I present you, the American-style two party system! How about we, the Canadian people, demand the electoral reform that we deserve, before we ended up like our southern neighbour?

T. Ryan Gregory 🇨🇦@tryangregory.bsky.social

Here's what happened. A lot of Liberal voters went Conservative. A lot of NDP and Bloc voters went Liberal. Everything has shifted significantly to the right.

As a part of a healthy democracy, I think it’s important for us to be constructively critical of all parties. And on that front, I think it’s deeply uninspiring to frame a party as being the solution to our systemic problems, rather than proposing actionable solutions (e.g., electoral reform)

Avi Lewis@avilewis.ca

Last night NDP voters saved Canada from the surging hard right, but had to sacrifice our own party in the process. Today the battle begins for a system where we don't have to do that any more. We badly need a party that can save Canada from the oligarchs who brought us all to the brink.

One more day of advance voting in Canada! Get out on Monday, April 21, 2025 to cast your ballot and skip the line! Polls don't vote, so come out and be the difference you want to see!

This is cool. The Guardian recreated a searchable climate future risk tool (wildfire, extreme heat, drought, hurricane, and coastal flood) for the US that was developed by FEMA but deleted by the Trump administration’s ‘climate’ purge.

If you're wondering how your priorities stack up with the parties' plans, CBC has a quick tool that will help you figure that out! And ICYMI, yes 🇨🇦 citizens can vote even if we don't live in Canada. Here's how: travel.gc.ca/travelling/l...

votecompass.cbc.caVote Compass - 2025 Canadian Federal ElectionUse this interactive survey designed by political scientists to calculate your alignment with the candidate platforms.

And we’d be able to leverage so much more under a proportional electoral system, where people don’t feel like they’re stuck between just two choices. Already popular with 68% of Canadians, let’s make that a key issue this election to push for, securing voters more leverage in the future

T. Ryan Gregory 🇨🇦@tryangregory.bsky.social

"What can we do?!" Use the leverage we have in an election to push the better candidate to adopt progressive policies, which happen to be very popular. Otherwise, it's just rightward leap vs rightward creep.

Fair Vote Canada has been doing excellent work pushing for electoral reform over the last few decades. Our upcoming election is indeed a very critical window for that. Let’s mobilize to make that happen. Even just talking about it in your circles can make a huge difference!

The federal election is about to be called—and we have a critical window to fight for proportional representation! We're asking for your help to deliver door hangers across the country to spread the word about making every vote count! #cdnpoli Sign up here: secure.fairvote.ca/en/action/el...

I find it concerning that Canada is collapsing into a two party system the American way, trapped in a down spiral that continues to disenfranchise voters wanting a real change. How about we make electoral reform a foundational issue this election before it’s too late?
