I stopped studying the cello. I started studying Arabic. I grew up on the other side of the middle of nowhere and am an inveterate urban dweller now. I like mathematics, fountain pens, and TTRPGs. https://sidewalks.meangrape.com

My hypothesis is the noise is an ggressive detector of xylene being sensitive to minuscule amounts causing no harm unless you bath in it. Alternatively I am wrong and will shortly die.

I accidentally took 108mg of methylphenidate and a few too many klonipin. I'm not feeling great, but my MD says I'm probably fine.

I have made two puff pastry waffles in the last two days. One with chinotto marmalade and one cinnamon-sugar. 6 on the waffle iron is a little too high; 4 is a little too low. I will acquire more puff pastry and try 5. It will be a cheese pizza one.

I cannot find my big (24x38") sheet of blotter paper. But as I'm going to unwrap all my paper and interleave it with buffered tissue in a few days I will find it

I'm testing 4 types of tape (3M 9495LE, 3M 415, GGR LP-20CC, 3M 9425) on 2 types of Tyvek (10G, 14M). One on Hollytex as a wildcard (3M 9495LE). Three on Mylar (3M 9495LE, 3M 415, 3M 467MP--another wildcard). The Mylar will be ready to test in 2 days; everything else in 3 days.

In this week's adhesive test (material: glassine): tyvek tape forms a cleanly resealable bond with a slight loss of tack at 9 cycles; 3M 850 forms a permanent bond; GGR LP-20CC also forms a permanent bond. Yesterday I received tape for Mylar testing. 3M 4945LSE

The place I buy my washi is hardcore. Buy seven different types of paper? You better be able to figure out what each of these unlabeled seven types of paper are when they get delivered.

I'm getting value from my offcut pile. (It's a 6x24" kraft tube that's running out of space--I roll sets of things up & drop narrow cuts of board & blotter in.) Need an 10x24" strip of Hollytex? Grab an offcut! What about an 8" square of usukuchi rayon? Something big enough for the cut is in there!

Final report. I replaced the Mylar with aluminum foil. It's got a lower WVTR (water vapor transmission rate) and conforms better for the seal. After 10 days (Erev Sukkot to this morning) being on a table the entire time, the rayon and tyvek wrapper worked phenomenally. Hadassim & aravot in great

Jay.@meangrape.com

The best method for keeping hadassim & aravot fresh for all of Sukkot is disputed. As I don't have enough fridge room and find damp paper toweling and foil primitive at best I have moved into the 21st century. 4 mil Mylar, Tyvek 10G, and 70gsm Rayon. Four days; still damp; vegetation is great shape.

shape. A few leaves fell off but no black spots. The rayon was still damp; I never needed to redampen it. I think it could go another 4-5 days. Best of all, once the rayon dries I can put these in my lulav case and reuse them next year.

I switched to 2 mil Mylar for better conformation

The 3M 9425 is here. As is the 3M 850 (foil) and the GGR LP-20CC. There is only one tape left to acquire (make). 12gsm washi with a hand-applied Klucel G ethanol adhesive

Varieties of tape I have in my office: 3M 415, painter's tape, gaffer's tape, washi masking tape (two colors), Tyvek tape, PSA linen tape, water-activated washi tape, Scotch magic tape. Tape I am expecting today: 3M 9425. I am glad to talk about them all with you. Adhesives are our friends.

The water vapor comes from the Rayon. Wetted under a sink and squeezed until damp. The Mylar provides a seal. The Rayon makes the water vapor; it passes through the Tyvek to the aravot and hadassim (we really need a single word for "the not lulav parts of the lulav), the Mylar keeps the vapor inside

What does everything do? The Tyvek touches the greenery. It prevents water from coming through (it is highly water resistant, but if I sprayed a hose on it it would fail). Water on the delicate leaves can cause black spots; way too much can cause sliminess. Tyvek does let water vapor through, though

I'm cleaning it out next month, and I'm going to have a 48x96" work table. I will be set

Jay.@meangrape.com

Tomorrow four 25lb/11kg sand bags filled with steel shot arrive to hold down the table legs. They're a little too easy to move. And I realized if I clean out the storage room (kind of a mud room with no shelves or sinks or anything but boxes of books) I would have room for a 48x72" table

My daughter asked for a shailah. "What beracha do you say over Tide pods?" "Birkat HaGomel" I guess that midrasha doesn't teach everything.

Now that the 48x48" work table is set up, and I've done some work on it I *really* wish I had the space for a 48x72" one. Two 24x48x36" tables oriented horizontally; two 0.25x24x48" tempered hardboards oriented vertically and taped together with gaffer's tape; one 36x48" self-healing cutting board.

Oh! And I'm going to make Klucel G washi tape. No water on the prints at *all* (This is what happens when I have a project; I really get into it)

Jay.@meangrape.com

UPS lost the 3M 9425. I have a claim that may take up to 8 days.

It's an uncoated PET

I am collecting rolls of things for a project: hollytex, rayon, papers, buffered tissue, tyvek. I haven't labeled them. Today I found a 20" roll of 5 mil something. It looks like a BOPET (Melinex, Mylar). I have no recollection or record of this purchase. So now it's test time. BOPET or not!

This is a big cutting mat. Today I should be receiving the two 24x48" tables that I will top with two 48x24" pieces of hardboard that I will then, in turn, put the giant mat on. (I have 2 more tables for the 36" rotary cutter (44x15" footprint)

Jay.@meangrape.com

I found a 36x48" self-healing cutting mat. It took me 10 minutes to pack and apply the shipping label to the 24x36" one I bought two weeks ago.

My theory about Tzom Gedaliah is that the rabbis were not that upset by his assassination, but they wanted to placate the Babylonian government with a public show of remorse so there weren't massive reprisals. Which is why 2400 years later I fast all day anyway

I have 6.5 sq yards of hollytex 3257. I do not need it all. So what has my brain come up with? A hollytex shirt. (Hollytex is a museum-grade conservation interleaving sheet)

It happened again. A bug that when I reported took me to an LLM that was a raving idiot. After 15 minutes I got a support email.

I'm going to stroke out. Every piece of software or hardware I have touched today is enraging me. Five attempts to reset a password because of horrible UX. An inability to get a scan from the scanner to the laptop after trying email, usb, and SMB. I'm taking a break.

On a positive note I really like Comme des Garçons Accident: Radish Vetiver perfume. I wish it was an eau de parfum instead of an EDT. Smelling like a radish pulled straight from dark earthy soil is pleasant if, perhaps, not universally appealing.

I have four bugs to submit. I do not want to write any good bug reports. They take too long. I also don't want to get on the phone/chat with Apple.

The remjet backing wasn't fully removed from this roll of CineStill 800T so I've got some neat little red glowing blips and streaks here and there

My platelet donation happened with a caveat. It went wrong enough that I had a bag of ice taped to my arm for 30 minutes.

Jay.@meangrape.com

I am donating platelets today because (1) there is a platelet emergency in the Boston area and (2) my daughter wants the Hello Kitty plushie the Red Cross is giving away, and she can't donate because she's overseas.

I try to bring a sense of grace and understanding to other people's software because that's how I would like my own failures and mistakes in that field to be treated. But *fuck* Slack's UX

I hate people that (1) do not support -h and --help (looking at you docker) and (2) send output from -h/--help to stderr (looking at you tailscale)

If anyone in Somerville wants some 6x24" (0.125 thickness) Kraft tubes let me know; I had to buy a pack of 10 and don't need 10.
