Forced face scanning of a U.S. citizen with zero cause, just bald racial profiling. This is tech fascism.

Mubashir and his family came to the United States as refugees from Ethiopia when he was a child, and they all became naturalized citizens in 2019. Despite being a U.S. citizen, Mubashir was targeted by ICE, assaulted, and detained. Listen to his story:

The Trump admin is going after subsistence rights of Alaska Natives, in part by lobbying from the safari group representing sport hunters. This is part of a larger move building against Native land rights in AK (re: mining, oil). You don’t have to be Native or a resident of AK to leave a comment!

An eloquent image: Setting aside the content under the tarp for a moment, teens were asked to make art expressing what it is like to be a teen, and the end result was a mural wrapped in a tarp by adults. I bet a lot of teens would find this expressive of their experience.

Bill C-5 is a disgrace that continues Canada’s colonialist tradition of ignoring and erasing Indigenous peoples, cultures, rights and title.

The closed-door meeting was promised by Carney in June after chiefs said their rights were not respected by the rush to push Bill C-5 through Parliament in June.

People who are fed easy (but not great) solutions to their problems tend to get lazy. People who get intellectually lazy (like chatgpt users) are not exercising their brains. ChatGPT users get stupider. In the end it's those of us who won't use AI who will get the shit done.

Kneecap kicks ass. Language revitalization is an important component of the changes our society needs to embrace to escape the death spiral. We lose important perspectives when we lose languages. Whether it be Gaelic or Kwak’wala. www.aljazeera.com/news/2025/6/...

Today while covering the Paramount ICE stand off an ICE vehicle rammed a barricade and then into a crowd of protesters. The feeling that consumed was the same that I felt watching the towers fall on 9/11. I vomited. My hands sweated. I felt like my bp dropped through the floor. I broke crying.

The old adage, “If the product is free, then *you* are the product,” is certainly apt here. But in this case, the product isn’t just you but, in particular, *your stupidity.* We should all be asking why the stupidity of millions of students is so valuable, and to whom.

just so we’re all clear: the reason they keep using dolls as their example is because they’re trying to frame caring about material stuff as feminine and thus inherently shameful

Bessent says that little girls who are sad about having fewer dolls should just have it explained to them that they will have a better life for it

As a pencil-head, these are some pretty cool pencils.

Pencils are one of the tools of my trade and this the best set I’ve been gifted: The limited edition Blackwing 574 Native American. Designed by artist Chris Pappan (Osage, Kaw, Sioux), a portion of all proceeds goes to the Cheyenne River Youth Project, enriching art programs for Lakota youth.

Again… There’s nothing “natural” about inequality.

Annalee Newitz@annaleen.bsky.social

A massive study of 50,000 households over 1,000 archaeological sites provides ample evidence that inequality is not a "natural" outgrowth of sophistication. Instead, it is a political choice. Which means, kids, that we don't have to choose it. archaeologymag.com/2025/04/stud...

Because I can’t stop with post apocalyptic stories… “The machine can go on, whether or not the world has ended. Why? Because, from the beginning, capitalist expansion depended not on meeting needs but on expanding production.”
